McKenna Not Among Bookies' Frontrunners For United Job Monday, 5th Jan 2026 13:44 Town boss Kieran McKenna looks unlikely to be in the running for the vacant Manchester United manager’s job, Ruben Amorim having parted company with the Red Devils this morning.
McKenna, who joined the Blues from the United staff in 2021 and held talks with the Old Trafford club in the summer of 2024, is joint-12th in the betting at 14-1 with William Hill with most other bookies ranking the Northern Irishman at a similar level.
Former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, United interim manager Darren Fletcher, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and ex-England chief Gareth Southgate are the current favourites with Laurent Blanc, Julian Nagelsmann, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Xavi Hernandez, Andoni Iraola, Michael Carrick, Marco Silva and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all ranked ahead of McKenna.
A greater concern for Town might be if Glasner, Bournemouth’s Iraola or Fulham’s Silva were to join United and their current clubs were to show interest in McKenna.
Palace previously approached McKenna in February 2024 prior to the appointment of Glasner, the Town boss coming close to taking the job before opting to stay at Town.

Really? Not what I read on the ipswich star site. Says he is on there. Would be surprised if he wants it at this point tho, with the way utd being run.

Would be no shortage of applicants if he did go, just how many would be of the right calibre? I suspect Ashton has a list of suitable successors!

I imagine we will eventually lose McK (unless we qualify for the Champions League), but I hope not for a long time yet. If we do, let's hope his replacement is an up-and-coming young manager rather than someone just doing the rounds. Surely McK wouldn't want to take the downward step of joining ManU from Ipswich!!
Jezeroo added 14:12 - Jan 5
lee grant would be on the KMK replacement list - not that I think for a second he'd go to Man U at the moment. Why would anyone?

Blues1, his is the betting odds page not the United short-list, it's all speculation. United has since said they will put a caretaker in charge until May anyway. I just don't see KM being an attractive proposition at the moment either. let's face it, they've gone through a long list of very high calibre successful managers in the last decade, how would Kieran rank higher than those? The only way I can see him going there would be if Ratcliffe decides on a Coach - Director of football combination and get an old head to work alongside him, but even then it's such a long shot. Moving on....

As the article suggests, a bigger concern would be a replacement option if Fulham, Bournemouth or Palace lose their manager to United.
Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 15:06 - Jan 5
In all seriousness, I think there is minimal danger of McK moving directly to ManU. But the danger, as has been pointed out, is that if Glasner or Iraolo takes the poisoned chalice, then either the Crystal Palace or Bournemouth option becomes available. Opting for a mid-strength PL team would be a much more logical move in a young manager's development. Let's just hope we get to the PL soon so he doesn't have to make that choice because we have become that mid-strength PL outfit.

Steve ITFC Sweden, totally 100% agree. BUT, when KM got his new bumper deal in the summer of 2024, two things changed. Firstly the list of clubs that could exercise the option to trigger his clause was amended (from ANY PL Club), and the £6m release fee that had been in the 2023 contract was significantly raised. Those were the basis of us making him one of the very highest earning managers in the PL, with a salary far in excess of those two clubs you mention. That puts the club very much in control of his destiny. He has 3 1-2 years left at the club, and unless Man United (who I assume are named as a club that could come and get him) want him and are prepared to buy out the massive release clause in his contract, then I think the speculation is for nothing. Should the club agree to allow an approach, it would only be of it's own view that a change might be timely. Either way, Im not losing sleep on this one, United will want a proven winner and in the event they want a younger man, Darren Fletcher is already there and would cost them nothing.

the fella at sunderland has shown what is possible for promoted clubs and mckenna is currently underperforming in the championship. maybe one dsy he will get a stint at a big prem club like utd but right now his bubble hss burst and he needs to prove himself. he needs to start winniig some gamrs from a losing position to deminstrate he is anything other than a flat track bully. so many of you worship him but when we wete 3 nil down and it still took 10 mins before our first sub that showed his currently is far from the finished article

Glasner has done a good job at palace and must be one of the favourites. Nancy didn’t last long at Celtic did he? I think you have to look at what goes on behind the scenes. Town have always given their managers the time and supported them where possible (with exception of McCarthy who got feck all to spend) and left the football decisions to them. Interference from directors of football etc can be negative if they don’t agree with the manager on footballing matters. I see man yoo fans want Wilcox gone as they see him as the problem. Ratcliffe publicly supported Amorim but now it has been decided to get rid. As we know from santo’s sacking from Forest, you don’t publicly criticise the hierarchy in press conferences if you want to keep your job. Amorim won’t be bothered he’ll get a good pay off and walk away leaving them in 6th place in PL which is not where fans want them to be but that’s an improvement from last season. If there is a bit of a managers merry go round, I can see KM leaving but his relationship with MA and his wife n kids being settled might be the reason for him to stay here where there is less pressure from fans and ex players/pundits like Keane and Neville at Man Utd. Thankfully for neville, he is a better businessman than he is a manager hahaha!

If they came for him, I'm sure he would go - and understandably so. Don't think they will though.

KMCK’s salary was adjusted when we were relegated but yes he is still a high earner. I don’t begrudge him a penny. His integrity is worth it alone in an industry full of sharks. The day will come when either the club or KMcK will move on but for now there is a job to do.

Why would he go to tuppeny ha'penny clubs like Fulham, Bournemouth or Palace ? Ipswich Town have far better long-term prospects than anyone other than the likes of Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Liverpool and maybe Chelsea. All the other clubs are simply making up the numbers in the Premier League. If Kieren McKenna stays long-term with Ipswich then a) we shall see European competition at Portman Road within 4 years and b) Ipswich Town will be challenging for major domestic trophies. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was Ipswich Town. I refer you to the reigns of Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson, and even George Burley. Kieren McKenna can stay here and become a legend beyond Ipswich Town or disappear into obscurity like many others.

....here we go again. Im past bored with this every time a manager is sacked in the PL.
armchaircritic59 added 17:59 - Jan 5
Extremely unlikely, so not bothered. Even if the extremely unlikely happened, well, we lost Sir Alf Ramsey, Sir Bobby Robson etc, and we're still here. As I've said before in posts, owners come and go, managers come and go, players come and go, but one thing remains constant, supporters through the generations.

Interim manager at United till the end of the season so it will be the end of the season when Palace or Bourmouth will be allowed to talk to KmK

Bazza8564. His releases clause was never £6m. In fact, when he was linked with the celtic job after Martin was sacked, it was quoted as being £5m. And I actually was talking about the betting, not utd themselves After all, they haven't named any likely candidates yet. Agree tho, that it would very unlikely be Mckenna at this moment in time
fifeblue added 20:43 - Jan 5
Why on Earth would he go to the Mickey Mouse league in Scotland? What's the challenge?
Bazza8564 added 08:35 - Jan 6
Blues, Martin was at Rangers?? And respectfully, £6m info was inside the club, so i trust it, especially as Palace got almost to the point of paying it when KM decided against going there. What the papers say about the celtic number is absolute tosh, his current release clause is well into 8 figures
Bazza8564 added 08:40 - Jan 6
And todays repeat of that £5m are off the mark too, his basic salary is around that number, so with 3 1/2 years left of his contract our invested value potential in him is £17.5m. Either way, Celtic can't afford him and O'neill is there until Mayso it's a moot point. It's just the papers making stuff up

Do not believe McKenna is on their list, but let's get real. If he is offered the United job on sensible terms, then he is not turning it down. He is a fan but they are still by most metrics in the top 5 Clubs in the World....and he cannot even really damage his reputation as most pundits consider Utd to be a basket case. I DO think McKenna might see the second half of the season as potentially an audition of some sort and will want to show his best abilities....but still do not think it his time to take that job.
