McKenna Again Tipped to Interest Celtic
Monday, 5th Jan 2026 18:01

The bookies are again tipping Blues boss Kieran McKenna to interest Celtic, the Glasgow giants having sacked manager Wilfried Nancy after only eight games and 33 days.

Martin O'Neill subsequently confirmed as boss for the rest of the season.

McKenna was mentioned in connection with the Parkhead job prior to Nancy’s appointment but with the link never any more than speculation.

Unsurprisingly, former manager Martin O’Neill, who had a successful stint back as interim boss prior to Nancy’s appointment, is the favourite to return at 4/1 on with some bookmakers.

Another former incumbent, Ange Postecoglou, is the second favourite, ex-player and O’Neill's assistant in his recent spell as caretaker Shaun Maloney third and McKenna fourth, ranked at around 12/1 or 14/1 with various bookies.

When McKenna was previously linked it was claimed the Northern Irishman, who has some affinity with the Bhoys, had admirers in the Parkhead boardroom.

However, it was believed that Celtic would struggle to meet the compensation the Blues would be due should they look to approach McKenna, understood to be £5 million.

They would also presumably find it tough to match the 39-year-old’s wages after he signed a very lucrative new contract in the summer of 2024, although with his salary having dropped following relegation, but would increase again if the Blues win promotion this season.

Anyone else for manager bingo! I just reiterate what I put in the Man U post, but add, the only thing big about Celtic is their fan base. Unfortunately for them they are in a mickey mouse league, qualify for Europe by default and normally get turfed out very quckly!

Can’t see him leaving mid season, but if he achieves promotion, very possible he could move on in the summer.

PhilsAngels, it's football, it never does. A bit like a non dart player who just keeps flinging darts at a dartboard, one will eventually stick in the bullseye. As it is with journo's and bookies.

You put your left leg in, your left leg out. You do the hokey cokey and you turn around. Oh hokey, hokey, cokey.

Celtic are a much bigger club than Ipswich - but even if KM takes a massive pay cut how can they afford the compensation? I think it’s a no-no. In the summer if an established PL club come in for him, I think that there’s more chance of him leaving then, than now.

MattinLondon, " Celtic are a much bigger club than Ipswich " but couldn't afford the compensation? So just how big do you have to be before you can?

Celtic have massive problems off the pitch and Hearts are going to better if not this year- next. McKenna would be an idiot to go to Celtic, the job at Palace will be available soon

A managerial graveyard even if you do the SPL, Scottish FA Cup & League Cup treble.

A couple of wins in that Champions League nonsense doesn’t put you on any radar.

Don’t see a huge queue for Brendan Rogers’ services in the current managerial merry-go-round.

That Aussie chancer briefly fooled Spurs and Forest but will see his days out back in third world football and Poor old Nancy will follow him after that shambolic two months.

Better off staying here and getting us up again in a woefully weak Championship, then he can probably have a choice of Palace or Bournemouth when their managers get poached.

With O'Neill booked till end of season (the Celtic board have been held in such disdain this season by the support e.g. seemingly most of the vitriol after the weekend Rangers defeat was directed at them not Nancy, I can't see them risking losing more 'face' by changing their mind on this) therefore no move for KMcK or anyone until then. If he is by that point a PL manager with us again, then, he'll hopefully go nowhere (Celtic or otherwise).

Bigalhunter. Brendon Rodgers already has a retirement job in the Saudi League so won't be mentioned with jobs. He joined weeks after leaving Celtic. As for Kieran, he will stay until end of season. If we go up he stays, if we don't he will have a choice of clubs to go to. Still think he will go man u next year

@armchaircritic59 Celtics record signing is 11M - there’s not enough money in the SPL to afford KM.

Compare that to the PL where each season is worth 100M.

MattinLondon, precisely my point, " Celtic a much bigger club than Ipswich " your words. Our record signing for the Championship made just a few months ago, not far off double Celtics record signing ( which I knew about ), and they don't have the sort of money to tempt the likes of KM. They get the chance to make some decent money in the Champions League but they are not good enough. They once were, but like us, that's a fair old while ago. I repeat, the only thing currently big about Celtic is their fan base, and I expect the great majority of them are expecting much better.

If he goes, he goes. Im past caring now tbh. We get this everything a managers position becomes available. The question is has McKenna's stock dropped now anyway ?

Lots of paper talk that always flies about on here when we haven't had a game for a few days and there no transfer activity as yet.
Man United and Celtic are the absolute definition of poisoned chalices at the moment and although I expect Kieran to do one of those jobs one day, i seriously doubt it will be yet.
I also think the club, having offered KM a massive contract in 2024 (making him amongst the top PL earners) would have made sure he was very very well protected from being poached by another club. KM himself has dismissed out of hand any questions about his future. Paper talk and tosh.
I'm more interested in what the transfer window has in store for us personally

KM has a good chance of managing in PL again if town are promoted, the league regarded by many as the best in the world. Why would he leave for Scotland, a Mickey Mouse league, it’s bloody cold all the time, plastic pitches, less wages, less money to spend on players. The history of the PL would of been different if sir Alex Ferguson had thought nah I won’t go to man yoo, I’d rather stay in Scotland and wait and see if Celtic or rangers come calling!

Very unlikely. A bit of a dead-end job in many ways with nowhere much to go, unless a manager can get them challenging in the upper echelons of the Champions League, which at the moment looks a pretty remote possibility, whoever is in charge.

Bazza8564, absolutely. Far more important we get that right then worry about the extremely unlikely.
