Woolfenden: We Gave Fortuna a Helping Hand
Sunday, 14th Jul 2019 17:33

Defender Luke Woolfenden felt the Blues gave Fortuna Düsseldorf a helping hand in their 4-1 defeat in the opening 45-minute match at the Interwetten Cup.

“It was a difficult game, they were a very a good team and we got off to a bad start conceding three goals in the first 15 minutes,” Woolfenden said. “But it was a good workout, we got 45 minutes under our belts.

“They kept the ball well, took their chances well, and to be fair their goals came from our mistakes and they punished us as well.”

Was manager Paul Lambert disappointed with the manner in which the goals were conceded.

“Literally every goal [came from our mistakes]. Obviously every goal you can stop but we gave them a helping hand with a lot of them. Literally that really, we could have stopped the goals.”

Fortuna were the second Bundesliga side Town have faced in just over a week with Paderborn defeating them 3-2 last Saturday.

“I wouldn’t say there’s a big difference but there is a difference,” Woolfenden reflected on facing top flight German opposition.

“Obviously they keep the ball very well, they don’t panic under pressure and even today their goalkeeper was spraying passes for fun, I’d say that’s the main difference.”

It's really important that we, the fans, do not turn on the team before the season has really started. They need our faith and our support, confidence is a fragile thing and it still seems to be a long way off.

We have yet to play anything approaching our probable starting line up yet, so be patient, keep the faith and support the lads, I am convinced they will come good if we do that.

We always do, our defence is still abismal and still hasn’t been strengthened and I don’t think it will

The amount of goals we gifted teams last season. Appreciate this is a 'friendly' but its still a competitive game. Need to sort this out. We cant concede 2+ goals a game and expect anything other than a loss. Give us a chance Lambert, sort this out!

Team is conditioned to losing. Norwood signing needs to be the gear change and hope he demands a better attitude and a lack of acceptance of results like this. We lose and there is no pain for the players, perhaps something they see as something supporters have encouraged at back end of last season. They would be wrong. We support the team, always will, but they need to consider losing like life and death. And now, friendly or no friendly!
