Blues Among Clubs Linked With Crewe Forward Dale
Friday, 30th Apr 2021 12:59

Town, Sunderland, Preston and Blackburn are all reported to be interested in Crewe Alexandra forward Owen Dale.

According to Football Insider, the the 22-year-old, who has scored 12 times for the Railwaymen this season, is a summer target of the quartet.

Dale, who is contracted until the summer of 2022, was named December’s League One Player of the Month having scored four goals in four games.

The Warrington-born right-sided wideman came through the academy ranks at Gresty Road and spent time on loan at Witton Albion and Altrincham as a youngster.

Town boss Paul Cook revealed at yesterday’s press conference that he was at Crewe’s 2-2 draw at Charlton on Tuesday evening in which Dale scored both his side’s goals.

Whether Dale was the reason for the Blues’ manager’s trip to the Valley or someone else - fellow Alex wideman Charlie Kirk had previously been tipped as a summer Town target - the 5ft 9in tall attacker seems likely to have made an impression.

Cook is set to give the Blues squad a major revamp during what’s expected to be a very busy summer at Portman Road.

Know nothing about him but Cook must have been at that game for a reason. Not prolific at Witton Albion or Altrincham but both loans were some time ago. Sounds like he has hit form this season.

12 goals from wide right, in a mid table team, is some going. I think we've had 15 from all our wide players (Edwards, Judge, Sears, Lankester and Bennetts) in total.

This illustrates the problem with the “sack everyone” approach.

The easy bit is telling the loanees and out of contract players to get lost.

The next bit is to recruit a new team. If you were a talented young player like Owen Dale, presumably living in the north-west, and you have the choice of two Championship clubs, a League One club such as Sunderland which is in the play-offs or us with several years of failure behind us, which would you choose?

It must put fear in every players head to hear that Ipswich are possibly interested in you.

Ipswichbusiness - I suspect if there are players we REALLY want we'll have to heavily out bid other teams in terms of wages. If you believe rumours that's broadly what happened with Norwood. Hopefully we've got an eye on released players from London sides as that always seems slightly more likely.

FPL-tractor, yes, there are no doubt players that we really want, but we will have to pay big money for them (especially wages).

There may be players released from London sides, but do we want them? Presumably they will have been released for a reason (e.g. they are no good, inexperienced, bad injury record, etc).

We will definitely be linked with loads of players over the next 3 months, but he is someone who will fit Cook's playing philosophy.
However I agree FPL, there will be a bidding war over the summer for the most desirables.

Don't wish to put a dampener on any excitement about this guy but if we want to build a team that's competitive in the Championship then surely a 12 goal a season player isn't the aspiring forward we should place high expectations to get us there.

We've gone with to many "meh" players & look where it's got us. I think in the summer we should be raising the bar much higher as this is maybe the best chance we have of getting players we really need & not average players like we're getting rid of.

Too long have fans felt obliged to like water players we can afford. Aspire higher now! We finally have the funds and leadership to back that up now! Exciting times!

Ipswichbusiness: which league one clubs do you think will be able pay “ big wages” when it’s set against a % of that clubs income ?

Ipswichbusiness We have a vision to sell now, so a young player may be happy to get in on the ground floor of a promising project.

Worth a punt, alot better than what's here at the moment. On another note, now we have money and new owners why not look abroad for a few players instead of the usual crap.

ArnieM; perhaps none, but Blackburn and Preston are Championship clubs. In any event, my point was that we are not an especially attractive proposition given the shambles that we are in.

Europablue; I really really hope that the vision proves convincing. I fear that players who have other options will go elsewhere unless paid an awful lot of money.

Got to be Charlie Kirk best player I’ve seen in league 1 this season especially the 2 games he played against Town. Get him in great player👍

I agree with skip. It's about time we spread our net far wider and started looking abroad. The scouting network at our club has been appalling in recent years. When was the last time we signed anyone of real quality from overseas?? I don't think Knudsen counts!

Owen Dale? Sign him up to play with one of our top scorers this season, Owen Gole...

Well Cook seems to know what rubbish looks like. So no worries.

Would be far more happier if we could find a couple of good footballers from a European club. There must be some fringe players desperate to get recognized, appreciated and regular first team football.

eddiespearitt03: Not easy to find European players and get workpermits after Brexit. The same rules apply to European players as for players from the rest of the world after January 1.
