Edwards Signs for Wigan
Thursday, 10th Jun 2021 17:47

Wigan have signed winger Gwion Edwards on a free transfer after he decided against extending his stay with Town.

The Welshman rejected the Blues’ offer of a new deal and was unveiled by the Latics today after completing a medical and the necessary paperwork.

Edwards, who scored 14 times in 109 appearances — 96 in the league — under managers Paul Hurst, Paul Lambert and Paul Cook, has signed a two-year contract at the DW Stadium, which will not officially kick in until the start of next month.

The former Wales U21 international spent three years at Portman Road following his £700,000 move from Peterborough and said: “I’m really pleased to get it sorted. I’ve travelled up from Swansea and done a medical and met everyone, and I’m really happy to be here.

“I'm looking forward to getting started. There were a few clubs after me and Wigan was one of them, so the turnaround over the last few days has been quite quick.

“I’ve played here before against Wigan, and know about the club, and know about the manager. He (Leam Richardson) sold the move to me with the ambition of what they want to do, and where they want to go. It’s something that I want to be part of.”

He added: “I know a couple of lads here, and I spoke to the manager who told me about the plans on how he wants to play, and what he wants from me. It’s really exciting.”

“The style of play suits me down to the ground. He’s watched me for a number of years now, and likes what I do and thinks I can be a part of his team. I will try and help us push forward and reach our goals for the season.”

What they want to do and Where they want to go? I bet it's not the same ambition as ours....

Plainly his ambition/application is not up to our requirements

I wish him well but really not bothered by this he's another who's gone down the football pyramid to a much smaller club like huws, chambers etc these players have been average at best hence where we finished past two season that a handful on here feel we shouldn't got promoted with. This is why we didn't as they are finding their level.

Another that came with promise and left as a flop

The way he and his teammates downed tools last season was embarrassing and I don't think he was up for the level of expectation that PC demands, hence why he's gone to a club with less ambition and potential. Probably suits him perfectly to play for a club where the expectation levels are lower, means his mediocre efforts won't come under as much scrutiny.

Best of luck to him.

Only good in about 5 matches a season - hopefully they aren't against us !

Big shame, was our top assister and second-top scorer last season. Nailed-on player of the year until his injury

Good ridence, as clearly didn't want to be here. I remember his debut under Hurst and was exceptional but unfortunately that was his best game. His free kick and corner in our last but one game showed me his commitment and loyalty to our club. Hope he does well as don't wish bad on anyone but am not upset to see him go. Am getting excited for the new transfers and chapter .COYB

I wont lose any sleep over his departure because we have a better replacement in Wes Burns.

I wish him well. On his day, he's a good player. Sadly, those days are few and far between. We can certainly do better.

I suspect he's realised that he'll only be a backup squad player. Well done all for showing him the door.

We only need players that want to be with us so no problem with him moving on.

I suspect if Paul Cook wanted to keep him he would have offered better terms. His signing for Wigan, an average League 1 side, really says it all

I wish him well but he never hit the performances that prompt us to sign him maybe that's because of the state of our apathetic club in the last few seasons and too much player power(which has now gone thanks heavens) so we move on and the squad is gradually improving at an early stage(how refreshing) with more to come of the same calibre recently added.

Good, I've been watching town since 1971, he's been part of the worst town side that I know of,

Good, another one off the payroll who has flattered to deceive! There is a player in there but like most of the recent squad failed to show up for most games!

"It is something I want to be part of," = "I don't want to be part of something in Ipswich." That is fine. That is football. If Cook had wanted him to stay, then he would have pushed Ashton to offer him a good deal, but it is clear he was surplus to requirements here, so good luck Gwion for the rest of your career.

I wish him well at Wigan but think he might get a rude awakening regarding the training and fitness requirements as Leam and Paul Cook are on the same lines. Will be watching how all of our departures get on next season, will they be re-energised by their moves I wonder?

Higher standards of commitment and consistency might serve him well – but he must dedicate himself and not disappear into the backwaters / shadows ,as he too frequently appeared to do at ITFC .

I think he's flattered to deceive and may perhaps overestimate how good he really is.

He always seemed to start seasons well and then tail off, end of last season he was woeful.

He may well have blinders against us next season, I suspect he will, but bet he won't the other 40 odd games.

He's decent but there are better players out there, he won't be pulling any trees up.
