Town Linked With Everton Defender Gibson
Friday, 2nd Jul 2021 13:04

Town are being linked with a move for Everton central defender Lewis Gibson.

The 20-year-old was a player on the Blues’ list of potential defensive loan targets in January 2020 when they ultimately signed Josh Earl from Preston.

Now, according to the EADT, Durham-born Gibson is on Paul Cook’s radar as he continues his summer squad rebuild, either on a permanent or loan basis. Gibson has a year left on his deal at Goodison Park.

Gibson was with Newcastle’s academy before moving on to Everton’s youth set-up in 2017.

The 6ft 1in tall centre-half spent time on loan at Fleetwood in the second half of 2019/20 and last season with Reading, where he made seven starts and six sub appearances.

Who would he replace? If Woolfenden is going to play we need an experienced CB next to him and as much as I like Toto, he's one of the players I wouldn't have minded moving on. We need a chambers like figure in their late 20's

He has Championship and Lg1 experience and Jeffers presumably knows him so might be worth a punt.

Talented young defender.
Could be a decent signing but we would need another CB on top to be certain 1st choice.
Ideally an older MaCauley style player for me.

Monkey blue your first decent comment. For me we need a Mowbray/De Vos/Bruce type no nonsense experienced centre half to partner Woolfenden however this guy could be great for competition which we need in defence more than anywhere

Not sure if he is a left or right sided player. Would be good if we can finally make sure we have one of each as our centre half pairing.

left sided defender who played unsuccessfully at Left back . Bearing I mind Ndaba and Baggott are both left footed this may well be a loan move so that Ndaba can be farmed out for experience.

@ringwood this season is definitely not the season to “ take a punt” on someone, it is without question our weakest position now and we need 2 good quality league 1 players as a bare minimum, preferably 2 with a decent amount of championship experience.
Now Chambers has gone and Wilson(bad decision IMO) we have woolfenden and toto who are only ones with real experience at this level, woolfenden is a yes for me but not keen on toto as he makes too many mistakes.
Also we made a big song and dance about tying Baggott down to a new contract not so long ago, so I would rather take a punt on one of OUR players who is of similar age if that is the route we are going to go down

Need an organiser, MR right place right time. Should have some muscle and experience.
Berra, Mowbray, De vos, Unspectacularly effective.

It's not exactly clear what and who we are aiming for ; other than obviously wanting an almost complete clear out ,and having an energetic , experienced executive team behind the Club, PC continues to play his cards pretty close to the chest .
That leaves us all ever more interested and curious ,and anxious to know MORE !
I see no point in bringing in under- experienced players ,to play alongside other yet less than mature defenders ; change for change sake is surely not PC and the sager heads recommending Mowbray/ DeVos// McCauley characters are along the lines needed - BUT how the wage bill calculations detrrmine options is not ours to know !

Need experience at the back, assume this is one of two CBs that we will be signing.

We need an experienced centre half - someone who is a leader and a potential captain over the next few seasons.

@BeattiesBackPocket sounds like you just described James Wilson

Bluefox added 15:18 - Jul 2
The trouble with James Wilson was that due to injuries he only played a quarter of the season both years he was with us. And it was the same when he was with Lincoln. We need payers are going to be fit to play a full season.

As i said on TWTD last week Clark Robertson of Rotherham would have been a good signing. He would have been the perfect experienced partner for Gibson but he has been taken from under our noses. I am sure PC knows of other experienced Centre Halves that he could go for so no need for panic. lol.

I know his older now but id love to see Phil Jagielka come in! Was still playing Premiership football last season. A leader. Strong. And Is a free agent! Would be a good experienced head.

90z: I like what you are saying, sounds great, but I don't think £15k-£2k+ a week on one player is a good idea.

Should say, £15k-£20k a year.

I thought Nathan Baker was being released by Bristol City. A few of their fans that I know in this area had said a few months back that we were being linked. For me he'd have fitted the bill perfectly. I must check to see if he's gone elsewhere.

Nysully I get where you're going but as much as I liked Wilson he wasn't that commanding centre half like a de vos or Mowbray for me and injured all too much.

"We ned a player like Chambers" great insight mokeybollox. He was a large part of the stagnation at the club. Should have gone 2+ years back.

Cadiar spot on to slow couldn't turn, his plus point was he'd play through a pain barrier gave what he could but at the end remembered for the wrong reasons
