Town to Wear Blackout Kit Against Derby
Tuesday, 11th Oct 2022 14:05

TWTD understands Town will wear their blackout third kit for the first time when they host Derby County live on Sky on Friday 21st October (KO 8pm).

The third strip, which was designed in conjunction with sponsor Ed Sheeran, has proved hugely popular since its release in August when more than 3,000 were sold in one day. Yesterday, after it went back on sale, fans purchased another 2,000.

In total more than 11,000 shirts have been sold, more than the combined total of home and away kits during the entire 2020/21 season.

The Blues last played a competitive home game in anything other their home kit in January 1979 against Orient in the FA Cup when they wore white and black, and prior to that, in January 1960, they wore red and white when they hosted then-non-league Peterborough United, also in the FA Cup. However, it could be the first time Town have been kitted out in anything other than their home strip in a league game at Portman Road.

The EFL allow clubs to wear a strip other than their regular home kit having sought permission, which the Blues were granted for the Rams' visit last week.

Derby seem likely to wear their maroon away shirt with both their home shirt having a large black area, as well as black shorts and socks, and their second strip black with a green trim.

The blackout shirt is currently sold out in all adult sizes other than small with the club set to announce details of a pre-order scheme for those still to get hold of one.

I don't care what colour we play in as long as we win.

RegencyBlue We can call out the stupid decisions that the club makes even if it only happens once in a black moon these days.

Stupid idea. The last time we were on Sky it was near impossible to differentiate between the teams on the long shots because the tone of the strips was so similar. I won't be buying a Sky pass to watch it this one.

I actually like the idea, shirt is clearly very popular, it's a great kit and would like to see it for this big clash….COYBs

Not for me, no need to play in anything other than blue and white! And for those saying its a one off, how do they know? Some things should be left alone, the home kit is one of those that should be left to tradition!

I dont believe we've ever won a game in Black including the loss on TV to Barrow. A bad omen I think.

People need to get real. Look at the investment and the professional management if the club compared to the previous 10 years. This is a non issue. Just show off a great kit and sell a few.

Really, really can't believe the toys out of the pram comments on here. All I care about is the result against Derby but the kit looks cool and gives the club the chance on TV to publicise the connection with a global star…. Thankfully people on TWTD aren't the marketing experts in the club otherwise it wouldn't even be an idea. We have a good manager and a good team performing well and that's what counts.

Something to do with our esteemed shirt-sponsor perhaps? If so, it's fine with me.

I'm pretty sure we wore a black kit in a 3-1 win away at QPR in the early noughties which was a live game on Sky? You could argue that's a goodish omen and I also very much like the current 3rd kit : but I'm firmly with the majority on this one, at home we play in Blue, end of. This is modern football commercialism / gimmickry that most fans have to endure though, and at least we look secure at FPR and aren't likely to move to a soulless stadium on the outskirts of Town.

Why? That means Derby will have to change. What a load of old tosh.

Anyone considered it could be another masterstroke by KM. A blue strip under floodlights with the stands full of blue shirts = camouflaged team mates.

An all black strip under the bright new floodlights = team mates stand out better and it stops Derby wearing their preferred black and white strip.

Why, in front of a Sky TV audience are we compromising our Blue and White identity at Home ? It is our trademark. The wisdom seems to be that Derby will wear their maroon kit. Black and maroon under lights will not be enough of a contrast. Most comments on here are opposed to this. If the Club want to wear ithe black strip do it an an away game as was the original intention. Given previous comments by the football authorities about colour clashes and the desire for teams to play in kits that allow people who are colour blind to distinguish it seems a strange decision and if this precident is set, where will it end?

Westy- I'm an Ipswich fan purely because the first live game I watched was the 78 cup final and I loved the colour blue… hence 6 year old Ipswich fan from Nottingham. However the identity of the club is Ramsey, Robson, punching above our weight, youth players coming through, fans to be proud of in terms of how we behave etc etc… playing one game in black is t robbing the club of its identity but it might help purchase the “Marcus Stewart” of this season or sign the Reuser on loan type thing that gets us out of this league. I love a moan but only about things that really matter.

Memory is ailing with age, however I recall our wearing blue shorts (rather than that season's white shorts) against someone like Swindon in the mid-90s. May be wrong!!

This decision stinks of commercialism, money talks, game on sky, they will go on about Ed Sheeran designing kit, result more sales, we should always play in blue at home!

Apart from the obvious objection to not wearing the home kit, why does anyone at the club think it's a good idea to wear black at a night match?

Hope someone tells the ref and linesmen that they need to bring a change of kit.

How morbid and depressing can't stand all black kits perhaps we should have a minutes silence as well. I can remember in the early sixties teams that got drawn at home in the FA cup had to change strips if they clashed with the away team. I can remember being at home to Oldham we played in all white with blue trim.
