Town to Wear Blackout Kit Against Derby
Tuesday, 11th Oct 2022 14:05

TWTD understands Town will wear their blackout third kit for the first time when they host Derby County live on Sky on Friday 21st October (KO 8pm).

The third strip, which was designed in conjunction with sponsor Ed Sheeran, has proved hugely popular since its release in August when more than 3,000 were sold in one day. Yesterday, after it went back on sale, fans purchased another 2,000.

In total more than 11,000 shirts have been sold, more than the combined total of home and away kits during the entire 2020/21 season.

The Blues last played a competitive home game in anything other their home kit in January 1979 against Orient in the FA Cup when they wore white and black, and prior to that, in January 1960, they wore red and white when they hosted then-non-league Peterborough United, also in the FA Cup. However, it could be the first time Town have been kitted out in anything other than their home strip in a league game at Portman Road.

The EFL allow clubs to wear a strip other than their regular home kit having sought permission, which the Blues were granted for the Rams' visit last week.

Derby seem likely to wear their maroon away shirt with both their home shirt having a large black area, as well as black shorts and socks, and their second strip black with a green trim.

The blackout shirt is currently sold out in all adult sizes other than small with the club set to announce details of a pre-order scheme for those still to get hold of one.

White kit at home

Not only do we need a pointless third kit, but we use it as a marketing opportunity to announce on social media that we are going to be wearing it for a home match?
Sometimes I think at 38 I'm too old for this world!

@Trequartista Yeah, those were the days with only one set of kits and a number of fixtures close together. I'm sure there was some sort of energy/power restrictions in place too? The kits didn't dry as easily in those days.

Ed Sheeran chucking another million quid in the kitty for us to do this? It will certainly get his name mentioned on TV.

We played at home to Leeds in a league match in our away strip because Leeds first and second kits were both a bit blue and white. 90s or 00s I think.

Would like a ‘not fussed either way' option on the poll.

It'd be a break in traditional to wear it at home for sure, but it's certainly a very nice shirt, and has been a massive commercial hit. Maybe it would be nice to parade it in front of the attending thousands and the many more on sky rather than a midweek away game with a thousand or so in attendance. As long as we win I don't really mind what colours we wear. Except yellow and green obviously.

Absolutely appalling decision. We are blue and white and there is no reason whatsoever, apart from financial, for taking to the Portman Rd pitch in this disgusting, black, drab kit. Of course it could be that the club are prematurely in mourning for yet another Sky defeat and the loss of our unbeaten home record this season. There have been so many positives since Gamechanger took control of THE BLUES but this ranks right up at the top of a negative decision. If you fans want to wear this as a piece of leisurewear, then feel free to do so but I am totally disgusted that the club think that this a good decision

I agree with the majority that we should play our home matches in blue and white.

A potential banana skin if we end up losing.

Disgusted at this. I am a Season ticket holder and will be staying away in protest.

We play in blue.

Marketing ploy and to be honest whilst I prefer town in blue it's not an issue worth getting upset about. Chill out. 😉💙

Oh my god. People having a meltdown bcse were gonna wear our 3rd kit as a one off in a home game? Even someone suggesting if we lose, it'd be bcse of the colour of the shirt we are wearing. Of course, like everyone, our colours are blue and white, but for a one off? And as if was possible wezhave had to change from our home kit, due to the issue over the colour blind, does this really make that much difference? And if we're never gonna wear it, what was the point of having a 3rd kit in the 1st place? But hey, it's ipswich town fans here. Can't moan about the football, so have to find something else to moan about.

I dont get this either, i cant see it has any commercial significance as the sales have already been made, unless Ed is buying into the club and buying Evans' final shares out, and they are using the kit to showcase it.

Either way I would have thought the news of this would have been accompanied by a reason, because at the moment it just seems to make no sense at all!

I shan't be able to make the game, but ought to be able to watch it on Sky.

At least it ought to be easy to work out who is who, because I for one, really struggled with the similarity of kit for the Plymouth v ITFC match. But my two lads in their twenties were also finding it tough (& no, it wasn't the setting on the 42" smart telly either as they were watching it elsewhere 😀). The whites on the sleeves, white shorts and dark socks.

Oh, and obviously this is nothing to do withbthe colour blind issue before some1 thinks I'm suggesting it does. And, personally I would have preferred we wear it for an away game, I just dont see why it's such a major issue for some

With our TV record maybe if we play in a unfamiliar strip lady luck will be with us ( for once)

Yes Yes and Yes

We need to make a change to banish the sky tv hoodoo and this is part one of the McKenna masterplan...blue doesn't work on sky lol!

Story has been changed to say Peterborough 1960 was last time we didn't play in home kit at home, but surely Orient 1979 was later?

I despair of our fan base sometimes.

Fourteen years of relentless decline under Evans and barely a peep from most. Plan to play at home in our third kit however and all hell breaks loose!

I swear we could sign Messi and win the Champions League, some of you would still find something to moan about.

I remember being at the match against Peterborough, we lost 2-3. Our opponents were then in the Midland League, it was a shock defeat and totally wrecked my 13th birthday!
If playing in any strip but our blue was a bad omen then, it certainly could be now, especially as the game is on Sky TV. Does anyone know of a superstition where one bad omen can cancel out another?

Omg , you'll be telling me there is no Father Christmas or the tooth fairy . Why is it causing some to say they will stay away others moaning about another million in Sheeran scoffers , if it dies it's no less than he deserves for helping to increase our identity across the world ,and why stay away , it's a one off , yes it sells the kit and if that enhances even more of the improvement the club is going through , we are still super blues on our travels , whatever shirt we wear , I should know I go home and away , the shirt is great it's identity with Ed is great , people will but it once the game is on identifying it with Ipswich and Ed Sheeran , so what ,,we are so quick to forget the evans years and cast offs out of contract players peeling paint on the stadium ,, it's not life or death for christs sake

I was of the opinion that the 3rd Kit was designed to be for use at an AWAY fixture where there was a possible clash with both KIts 1 & 2 and NOT for a home game. Personally, I do not like the 'black' kit anyway....sorry Ed!! Surely, the idea is to make Portman Road as 'Blue & White' as possible for a home game isn't it?

Ipswich play at home in blue "I never felt more like singing the blues..." if we wish to look like men from the milk tray advert away, then OK. We are however the super blues and this bit of commercial money making madness needs to be dropped.

I didn't say it was the first, I said it could be, partly to draw out any memories of previous matches in non home kits!
