McKenna: Nothing Decided on Ahadme's Next Step
Tuesday, 17th Jan 2023 12:58

Town boss Kieran McKenna says nothing has been decided regarding striker Gassan Ahadme, who has been the subject of discussions regarding a loan return to his former club Burton Albion.

Ahadme joined the Blues on a three-year-deal with the club having an option for a further season on deadline day in the summer but has had a frustrating time at Town.

The 22-year-old has made only one start and seven sub appearances - six sub appearances in the league - having spent around two months out with a broken foot, scoring once. Prior to his move to the Blues, Ahadme had netted five goals for Burton.

Having featured for both the Brewers and Town this season, Ahadme could only join Burton on loan during January due to FIFA's three-club rule other than an unlikely switch to an overseas league which runs through the summer.

Last week, Brewers boss Dino Maamria revealed that talks had taken place with Town regarding Ahadme’s return but told Burton Live that as it stood the move wasn’t going to happen.

“The financial agreement was ridiculous, something that we can’t pursue,” he said. “So, as far as I’m concerned today, the deal is dead in the water.”

Quizzed on those comments and the potential for Ahadme to make a move back to the Pirellii Stadium, Blues boss McKenna was less than pleased that the discussions had been made public.

“These conversations are internal, it’s inappropriate really for anyone to speak about these things externally,” he told BBC Radio Suffolk. “There’s been nothing decided yet.

“We’ve been in conversation with Gassan, he’s our player, he’s someone we think highly of and it’s important that we have the right next step for him, so we’re having those conversations with him and we’ll keep those internal.”

Ahadme is a member of the Blues’ 22-man EFL squad and, following the signings of Massimo Luongo, George Hirst and Nathan Broadhead, Town currently have 23 players who fit within the parameters to be included.

Never really understood his signing in the first place? One of a number that the club have got wrong in the past 12 months IMHO

'It's not appropriate...' surely.

Fans didn't rate Kieffer Moore either.

Only transfer misstep so far. Looked a bit of a panic decision at the time and now we have a situation where Bolton have us over a barrel financially, as we cannot afford to give up a squad place to him, don't want him (and not fair on him) to be sat in the reserves, but Burton are refusing to pay the going rate....good for them I guess as the only realistic solution is a cut-price loan back to Bolton, but maybe not until the back end of the transfer window in case we have an injury situation that frees up a squad place.

Hmmm, I wouldn't be surprised to see him move on if not now, in the summer. Sometimes things just don't work out.

Burton don't really have us 'over a barrel', as they are battling relegation and could probably do with a striker who scored several goals for them earlier in the season.

buzbyblue - whilst I don't disagree on your view of Ahadme, interested to hear which other signings have been poor as I can't think of many but always good to hear other points of view! Camara is one (pointless signing someone with a nagging injury) but then I think we're in pretty good shape.

With K M all the way ; really crazy for Burton to be acting in this manner – doesn't get anybody or anything achieved ! COYB

Could he go abroad, heard he speaks Spanish, French & Arabic so language not a problem. We also have Rekeem Harper at Exeter, don't know if he is getting game time.

I know im in the minority but i think our recruitment can be improved. How many can you say have given you the WoW factor not many. I think Ahadme was signed on his performance against us which sounds like a panic buy to me. Having said that i think he should be given a bit more time as he's had his fitness issues. Still on the subject of recruitment why do we sign players that are not fit.

Maybe we bought him with a view to having a good look at him. We'd not been able to get Hirst at that point , so what was to lose by going for him. If it didn't work out … we could loan out or sell on . I think it would have turned out different if he'd not then got a broken foot in his first few weeks here. Now we e secured Hirst AND Broadhead, and we gif in Ladapo, so there's a lot of competition now. Perhaps gif this season we'll loan him out to get regular games. But I'll be surprised if we see him in a first team shirt again next season. We'll probably try and secure Hirst.

In the summer we had Simpson leaving and Hirst not coming in, so that just left Ladapo and Jackson for the striker role. I can understand why we signed him. However, now that we have both Hirst and Broadhead he looks surplus to requirements, so it seems in everyone's interest that he has a loan move.

Swap him for Joe Powell

I wonder would Burton take him if we subsidised his salary? Would allow us take another player on if necessary also he would get more useful experience than he would playing in the reserves. This might be important if we decide to sell him in the summer. A win win for everyone??

Linkboy, I think our recruitment has been considered and incredibly professional. in terms of "wow" factor, despite being a club very much in the ascendancy we are still playing 3rd tier football......"wow" comes a little higher up the pyramid! Ahadme is still very young for a striker and our guys clearly see something in him. Can't see us being into panic buying, would more likely explore the loan market if we're short in a particular area. That area being deemed by most to be in the striker department, but yet again points were dropped against Plymouth at the other end of the field?

Burton have acted very poorly here and its their loss. Its a shame if he has to (potentially) go and play U23 games for a while but everybody including my dog is expecting Jackson to move on soon, or face the reality that Keogh came for coaching so its a short term issue.

Not all transfers work out, and we only have to look at Scott Fraser, Harper, Carroll, Penney from the Cook era to prove the point. Chaplin,Burns Evans Morsy, Walton and latterly Davis, Leigh, Harness etc etc have worked out OK though havent they. And before anybody starts spouting Robson please tell me £200k on Kevin O'Callaghan was good business, we paid that for Thijssen! . It happens.

All managers will sign the odd player who doesn't settle. Ferguson made loads, (Most of his GK were dreadful) Klopp signed Shaquiri and never used him, Pep seems unsure of Aki and Chelsea signed about £1bn who have flopped.

It will work out, but Burton were out of order!
Its the nature of the beast

I'm sure it won't be lost on the coaching team (even if it is on some of our fans) that this is essentially Ahadme's second season in regular pro football and as such he is very much one for the future rather than immediate option

Why where Burton out of order BAZZA what have you read in that article that we haven't?
Ahadme on big wages that Burton can't and won't afford! Simple as that

Burton are playing the same kind of game that no doubt Ashton does. It's hardball. They know we want him off the list but they are the only club he can go to, so they are just playing the long game. The error was to talk about it publicly.

Cant think of any club in history that's not bought players that haven't instantly lived up to expectations for various reasons. Part of the game, hit & miss, take a gamble & sometimes doesn't pay off in the short or long term.
Not sure why some are acting like KM has made a bad choice because he cant instantly get good results from a player. Chill out, give KM a break and the lad time. Some reasons are beyond their control. Neither have actually let us down so far & long way to go still.

Ahadme would have been a regular in the team if he hadn't been injured. Perhaps he would have proved himself and we wouldn't have needed to sign another striker. Just bad luck. He will go out on loan to someone and increase his value.
