BBC Radio Suffolk Signs New Commentary Deal
Monday, 24th Jul 2023 09:24

BBC Radio Suffolk has confirmed it has a signed a deal to broadcast live radio commentary on Town’s matches during the season ahead.

Brenner Woolley, who celebrated 20 years as the station’s commentator in February, will once again be be the man behind the mic with Blues legend Mick Mills alongside him for home matches.

“I can't wait to get going again,” Woolley said. “It's terrific to see Town back in the Championship and it's going to be fascinating to see how they get on.”

Radio Suffolk executive editor, Peter Cook, added: “I'm thrilled to have signed a new deal with the club, making us the only radio station who'll be broadcasting live commentaries on every kick of every Ipswich Town match.

“Last season was one to be remembered and we're hoping for more of the same this time, but whatever happens we'll be there side-by-side with the fans throughout.”

In addition to Radio Suffolk's commentary, which will be available on FM and DAB but not online, the club will be broadcasting its own via its new TownTV service.

Sports editor Graeme Mac will present a preview show every Friday between 6pm and 7pm joined by Woolley and another Blues legend John Wark.

Radio Suffolk is also launching “a new fanzine show”, Tractor Social, between 6pm and 7pm on Monday evenings presented by Connor Bennett.

No, only on radio. Online rights are owned by the club.

Great news, love to listen to Radio Suffolk on the way home after a home match. Question for Phil is it your understanding that away evening matches will still be available to watch on Towntv on a match by match basis (as per ifollow) without having to pay the £5.99 package?

Is Town TV actually going to happen? With the first league match a couple of weeks away I haven't seen anything about how to sign up and what it will cost.

PhilTWTD If the club have online rights, are they providing any kind of radio service? I assume not. In that case, they are just not allowing people to have a service even if they are willing to pay for it.

Pity about the lack of Radio Suffolk online - would be good to hear live matches here in Shropshire

Can anyone confirm that the £5.99 Town TV includes live audio commentary for all games?

tiptreeblue, portman blue I share your pain. I live in London and far prefer the Brenner/Mills commentary to the one provided by the club

Always thinks its bizarre that the people who need Live commentary the most (exiled fans) cant get it.

I wish they had Radio suffolk commentary for the games. Brenner is execellent in my view, nice radio voice, knowledgeable.

If you link your BBC account to Alexa I believe you can get Radio Suffolk anywhere in the country

I also live out of the area & have pretty much listened to every Town game, home & away for many years & have been really disappointed by the clubs decision to drop BBC Radio Suffolk from game coverage, the club coverage is so biased & no where as good as Brenner & Mick Mills, some of the away coverage is awful, really hammy & with awkward interaction with the guest player/ reviewer, no way as good as Mick & Alex Mathie for away games. Thankfully the Club has done a deal with BBC Radio Suffolk & fans in the Suffolk area wont be subjected to the Clubs commentary, I guess I'm stuck with it & hopefully it will improve this season or sometimes I will get Brenner & Mick for home games & they often forget to switch the feed off

I whole heartedly agree with all the town fans who now live outside the Suffolk area. I live in Cambridgeshire and I can't get radio Suffolk coverage. Come on. Sort it out!!

BlueySwede I agree he is a good commentator but doesn't he hate Ipswich fans? I'm sure I read years ago he called us the great unwashed or something along those lines. Crazy he still comments on our club if that's what he thinks of the fanbase.

I'm pleased Radio Suffolk will still have the match commentary but I shall have to invest in a DAB/FM radio to listen as you can't stream it.
As far as Town TV is concerned my view is you can see which way the club are going putting as much as they can get away with behind a paywall and it will only get worse if/when we make it to the promised land of the Premier League.
As much as Ashton and Co have done that is good for the club they will be milking the fans for every penny they can get away with - such is the business in football today.

carsey, It's got me wondering if last year was just a special year before everything goes bad as we chase the dollar signs. I understand the argument about the need for increased revenues to be able to compete, the problem is that clubs are still run at a loss even when they are milking the fans. Also, they will run the risk of breaking the relationship us fans have with the club that has only just been mended if they treat us as customers to milk. To me it's also really short-sighted. If you put everything behind a pay-wall you stop casual interest from ever growing into anything more. Full matches are rightly behind the pay wall, but interviews with the players and highlights (after a delay) need to be out there for free.
