Farke Pleased With Offensive Firepower
Saturday, 26th Aug 2023 21:43

Leeds boss Daniel Farke was pleased with his side’s “offensive firepower” during their 4-3 victory over the Blues at Portman Road.

Farke handed a debut to new signing Joel Piroe, while also starting Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra, who returned to the fold this week having agitated for a move and due to a contractual legal issue respectively.

All three scored along with Georginio Rutter, the fourth man in an attack which cost more than £70 million.

“I was in general pleased with our offensive firepower today, especially because we played a side who in their first four competitive games had recorded three clean sheets and just conceded one goal, so it was a difficult place to come here.

“They played full of confidence and in front of an excited home stadium and for us to then dig in and to grind out a result and to score four times is really, really good.

“Especially also having the offensive players on the scoresheet as so far we had more or less just defensive players score, Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling and Pascal Struijk in the cup.

“I’m pleased for my offensive players, they showed real quality today, also clinical finishes and it's good for the mood, good for the confidence, good for the table, good for them also to be off the mark in terms of goals because Joel is just a few hours more or less with us, Willy and Luis were for obvious reasons not involved last week, so they're not in the best rhythm.

“But then to score and to be on the on the scoresheet is good. It helps us and I'm happy with this.”

£70 million?!?

And that's just the attackers.

I think we did well today!

I should he is pleased working with a multi million pound squad: you’d hope he could get a “ result “ from that forward line . PL parachute money for failure, frankly, stinks.

2 of the goals were clinical finishes; the other 2 were good 'poacher' forward play goals, so he is right to be pleased with his "offensive firepower". We've come from playing against league 1 quality forwards week in, week out, to now being up against multiple £20m+ Premier League quality strikers in one side. That level of forward will punish any mistakes, or lack of concentration, and unfortunately that was the case with all 4 goals yesterday; so it very much was a lesson learned for us.
Woolfeden should have been stronger for the first & Hladky will be very disappointed with the second,; but both had been playing well up to yesterday, and despite the scoreline, I thought both actually had a decent game generally & didn't let their mistakes affect their confidence in how they played afterwards.
Nobody on here has to defend Leif Davis's contribution to the team, but again, he'll be disappointed with the 3rd goal. Maybe there was miscommunication with Hladky, but hesitancy on the goal line, with sharp forwards around, is likely to be punished. He'll learn from that.
As for Brandon Williams; I was encouraged by his peformance, despite him getting caught cold for the 4th goal straight after his introduction. I was reminded of Leif Davis's debut last season, where his lack of fitness & match sharpness cost us a goal, & indeed points, but ultimately it was the first step on his journey to being an exceptional player for us over the course of the season. Obviously it's early days, but I saw some of the same qualities from Willims yesterday & am looking forward to him getting up to speed for plenty more games ahead.

Have we ever played a side whose attack cost £70m or more in the history of ITFC, even against Premier League sides?

On yesterday's showing it looked like Leeds need to spend another £70 million on defenders and a goalkeeper, so no wonder F##k$r only spoke about his forwards.. Leeds fans can expect a lot of high-scoring games this season!

Really shows the disparity in the Championship, its ludicrous the relegated teams get parachute payments. They failed & should not get an advantage, so we have yoyo teams, Narwich being an example, nearly said good example. We are one of the better financed teams but cant compete with Leeds, Stn, Leicester & FFP comes into play which i have no understanding of. Everything is stacked in favour of the relegated tèams but I was not Really impressed with Leeds apart from the finishing which we gifted them. Hopefully they won't get promoted.

Bolton 0-0, Burnley 3-4, Man City 2-4 so started Sir Alfs first season in the top flight. How did it end? It was well worth the wait to beat Villa 2-0 in the last match. Can we draw parralells? The 30K watching Saturday were excited with attacking and positive football. We are not disappointed and humans including football stars will always make mistakes and errors of judgement. Its a big learning curve. Would we be happy with a top-six place this early in the season - of course we would!
