Mowbray: I Think Stansfield Wants to Stay Here
Tuesday, 16th Jan 2024 23:35

New Birmingham City boss Tony Mowbray says loan striker and Town target Jay Stansfield wants to stay at St Andrew’s for the second half of the season.

Stansfield, 21, is a player Blues boss Kieran McKenna has admired for some time - TWTD first reported interest in July 2022 - and Town are keen to bring the Fulham striker to Portman Road during January, while Sunderland have also been linked.

Ex-Birmingham boss Wayne Rooney revealed that there is a small period in this window in which the Cottagers can recall Stansfield which former Blues captain and coach Mowbray says isn’t yet up.

“No, it hasn’t closed,” Mowbray told Birmingham World following his side’s third-round FA Cup victory over Hull City in which Stansfield netted his eighth goal of the season.

“I’ve been trying to get hold of Mark O’Sullivan over the last couple of days. I get on well with Mark. I’m pretty sure he would’ve been telling me if there were any issues or problems.

“I think the kid loves it here, ultimately. I had a one-on-one, I looked him in the eye. There are other interested parties but I think he wants to stay here and score goals. He likes the dressing room, he likes the players. I think he’s here just to progress his career.

“If he wants to play in the Premier League, he needs to be playing in the Championship and you need to be careful sometimes when the perception of a more successful club comes along near the top of the table. You’ve got to be careful that you don’t go there and play two games of the last 19.

“There’s every chance he’s going to play just about all the minutes in this team. I think he’s in a good place here. I don’t know, there’s a small tight window for things to happen [Fulham to recall] if need be.”

Town are targeting the addition of two strikers before the end of the window with George Hirst out for much of the rest of the campaign having undergone hamstring surgery and Dane Scarlett having gone back to Tottenham.

Need players that want to be at PR. Leave him where he is. Probably sees his career being in the prem with Fulham.

Honestly what a load of nonsense, surely Jay won’t fall for that will he?

He knows we are short on strikers, could be in the prem next year, play a better style of football and have a better manager. I assume he likes being by the sea too!

He'd start most games between now and the end of the season. Certainly wouldn't be playing 2 out of 19 games!

My take on that....
TM "thinks" he wants to stay is not the same as "know" he wants to stay...
What sensible career minded footballer tells his current boss he doesn't want to be there?
If the window is not closed that may also indicate its not even open yet.... Fulham would surely want access to their player towards the end of it in case of the need to wiggle on their own prospective deals....
And finally much as I love TM... if he thinks JS is not going to get more than a couple of games with our Current resources and rotation policy then he's just ruled himself out of ever succeeding our current genius!

Rather stick with what we have than make a desperate signing if he doesn't want to be here fair enough. Need players that fit the dressing room and work ethic

It's just Mogga trying to do best for himself & the club he manages; he knows it will be very hard to replace Stansfield if he goes, especially with more than half the window now gone.
Stansfield is the best option for us, of those that have been linked; not just the kind of player he is (although not exactly like for like with Hirst), but also because he has been starting & scoring regularly in the Championship for the last few months.
If there is still a chance, we should maintain an interest, while keep looking at other options, as we are in such a strong position to get back to the Premier League this season.
As for Stansfield wanting to possibly stay at Brum, well that's perfectly understandable for a loan player who is happy & doing well. He is likely to be playing top flighti minutes next season now anyway.

TBH I thought as soon as Mogga went there we’d have little chance of getting him. Oh well move on ….

Not particularly bothered ultimately will come down to what Fulham want if a loan they will probably leave where he is if they want to sell whoever gives them the most money. As for us we won't pay over the top on a player who has half a good championship season same as Simms.

Who said he doesn't want to come here? He has said nothing. This is just positioning, Mowbray doesn't want to lose a quality striker after he just starts the job. Oh, and by the way, didn't Hirst say he wasn't interested in coming here - what short memories some people have.

it's possible. if that's genuinely the case we just need to move on and keep searching. weirdly enough though, one of the reason he chose Brum over sunderland was due to the location being closer to London, Ipswich is even closer! so logistically would be better. it was always going to be a struggle to find a Striker, but I'm sure once we do it will be the right person.

It’s only partly up to Stansfield to decide where his loans are. The Fulham loan manager has all the power and will make the decision. He will take the player’s preferences into account but ‘helped a team get promoted to the Prem’ rather than ‘Helped a team avoid relegation’ boosts a player’s sell-on potential.

All said and done, we probably don’t actually know who KMC is targeting!

Get off the lad’s back!

He is a Fulham employee on loan to Birmingham. He is only 21 and may never have been to Ipswich in his life. He will have to do what Fulham want. If being happy at Birmingham simply means that he is not trying to cause trouble to get a move then that is a good thing.

Most of this is just Mowbray saying the right things for his audience and Stansfield saying (or, more correctly, allowing to be said) the right things for his current audience. The one significant new bit of information is that the recall window is still open. Like many others I’d assumed that by this stage of the month it was closed.

Whoever we get then i hope its not at an inflated price as demand far outweighs supply atm.
Also, we certainly don't want to upset the dressing room by giving ott wages.

Any foreign options btw?

It's Fulham's decision at the end of the day - Not the player's or Mowbrays.

Whilst it's a lot of media spin by Mogga, I do agree with him that if Fulham wanted to flip Stansfield that they'd probably have done it by now. I'm sure Town are focusing on someone that we wouldn't guess, as many have suggested already.

Wanting to stay at Birmingham shows he doesn’t have the drive or ambition that Ashton looks for in a player.

The player has not said he wants to stay at Birmingham but of course he will not do or say anything until such time as Fulham call him back.Stansfield would be almost guaranteed a slot this season so Mowbray’s comments are probably said more in hope than anything else. Who know’s, we certainly don’t !

We let's face it he's hardly going to say, no he wants to go to Ipswich is he? Let's be honest theres a far bigger picture here than just Tony Mowbray's view of things

It’s Fulham who make all decisions regarding Stansfield….if ITFC want stansfield until the summer and are prepared to pay all costs involved with that, I’m sure he will come.
Maybe we are only interested in a permanent deal…

Stansfield would be a great addition. This is looking a little like the Whitaker saga last season but McKenna can be trusted to make improvements. The young Arsenal lad recalled from SPL is an option for a loan. He’s got fantastic stats at Motherwell and has been recalled. Fans rate him highly
