Liverpool and Manchester City Up First For Town
Tuesday, 18th Jun 2024 09:00

Town will host Liverpool at Portman Road in their first game back in the Premier League before a visit to champions Manchester City the following weekend in a huge first eight days of their first season back in the top flight in 22 years.

Liverpool, the Blues’ last opponents in the Premier League at Anfield on the final day of the 2001/02 season when a 5-0 defeat consigned them to relegation, visit Suffolk on Saturday 17th August with a 12.30pm kick-off for live coverage on TNT Sports.

A week later, Town make their first ever trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Following the second round of the Carabao Cup in midweek, the Blues entering the competition at that point this season, Town host Fulham on Saturday 31st August.

The first international break of the season precedes a visit to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday 14th September with the third round of the Carabao Cup in the midweek ahead of the Blues taking on another of the promoted sides, Southampton, at St Mary’s on Saturday 21st September.

A week later, Town host Aston Villa, then on Saturday 5th October will play their first ever match at the London Stadium against West Ham United.

The Hammers are the Blues’ final day of the season opponents at Portman Road on Saturday 25th May, the last game of a final month which starts at Everton on Saturday 3rd May before Brentford are at Portman Road on Saturday 10th May, then Town travel to fellow promoted side Leicester City on Sunday May 18th, the day following the FA Cup final.

At Christmas, the Blues host Newcastle United on Saturday 21st December, then visit Arsenal on Boxing Day, a game which is live on Amazon Prime, before Chelsea are at Portman Road on Saturday 29th December.

There’s no New Year’s Day game with the first match of 2025 at Fulham on Saturday 4th January. The FA Cup third round will be played over the weekend of Saturday 11th January.

There’s only one fixture at Easter with Arsenal making their visit to Suffolk on Saturday 19th April.

Midweek games are fewer in number than was the case in the EFL with Crystal Palace at Portman Road on Tuesday 3rd December, another match shown live on Amazon Prime, and Brighton visiting on Tuesday 14th January.

Town travel to Manchester United on Wednesday 26th February and AFC Bournemouth on Tuesday 1st April.

Blues fans will visit four new grounds in the campaign ahead, the early-season trips to Manchester City and West Ham and the games at Brentford, Saturday 26th October, and Spurs, Saturday 9th November, Town’s first competitive match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having played a friendly ahead of 2020/21.

In addition to the September international break, there are no games on Saturday 12th October, Saturday 16th November and Saturday 22nd March.

Not an away fixture that Liverpool would want.

Imagine 3 points against Liverpool.

More open to bus parades, laps of honour, speeches on the Town Hall steps, knighthoods..

This could work out pretty well for us. The first games of the season are when any tricky plays that the boss has come up with in preseason will be busy effective, Liverpool and city players may still have the hangoverinjuries from the euros to contend with and Liverpool will have a new manager settling in.
Points on the board at this point against the top teams will certainly be a big bonus going into the season.
On top of this; our teams approach to games is as professional as I have seen it in 20 years (or ever?) I'd put a cheeky bet on them getting a couple of huge results.

If the big fish are likely to slip up it is at the first stage of the season so strange as it may sound this might be the perfect time to play both Liverpool and Manchester City!

Game 1, Liverpool, new coach, team not clicking yet. Ipswich win
Game 2. Man City, players still exhausted after euros, copa, Olympics. Ipswich win
Game 3. Fulham. Silva leaves on eve of season, club in chaos. Ipswich win
Game 4. Brighton. See Liverpool above. Ipswich win

Long story short, I cant see anything but 38 wins for Ipswich next season. Which is nice

No one, especially the pundits, will expect us to get anything from the first two games so it's a free ride.

Realistically, I’d take a point from those two fixtures but you never know we could keep surprising people!

I'm glad we have got these two first. They won't be firing on all cylinders and with so many of their players involved in the Euros and Copa America they maybe a little more tired and jaded than usual. At the end of the day, we have to play them at some point, get them out of the way our season won't be defined by results against teams like: Man City, Arsenal or Liverpool but it will provide a good marker for us early doors to show what we are up against.

The reality of being in the Premier league is slowly sinking in. Anyone know when the new kits are being released. Fascinated to see what colour the away kit will be. Ive always loved the Wolves home strip old gold and black but the less mature of us on here will say it's too much like Norwich. One small problem last season was the availability of programmes on a couple of occasions they sold out. Hope they don't do what some clubs have done and do away with selling them altogether.

I'm sure Kieran will have the team in the right frame of mind for these massive challenges. Just hope we don't lose too much belief if things go as most outsiders expect. But this is what we went up for - to pit ourselves against the best. COYB!

What a start, don't understand why Hladky hasn't signed, best league in the world, assume agent hanging on for more money! If he doesn't want to stay, let him go?

Oh heck , so we need to get Sarmiento and Hutchinson back quick , find a keeper and a right sided centre back and full back , plus an International standard target man up front plus a couple of midfielders under 30 years old ! Whats the problem ?

We were going to play them at some point anyway. Great way to start the season and with no expectation outside of club of victory, the players should feel free to go and express themselves.

I’m looking forward to it and now hope we can secure a few decent team-first signings early to bed them in during pre season.

Could be the best time to play them, to be honest.

Phil, do we play any of the teams in the CL after they have played a match in midweek?
Or europa league?
That may affect them but also the KO day and time, especially if they are playing on a Thursday!

Just go out and be Ipswich, we'll be just fine. My bets on us surviving are racking up against Budgie mates!

As Mike Ashton has said today, 'it's all got very real.'
A third of our potentially 6 toughest games out of the way this early is good, I feel. And even if we are rock bottom after those 2, KMcK and his staff are level headed enough to put that in perspective and keep the team looking forward with realistic ambition.
