Town Agree Fee For Manchester City Striker Delap Tuesday, 9th Jul 2024 13:55 Town are reported to have agreed a deal with Manchester City for striker Liam Delap.
As TWTD revealed yesterday, Delap was at Town last Thursday to look around while also making similar trips to other clubs.
The extent of the interest was played down but things appear to have moved quickly and now, according to The Athletic, Town and City have agreed a fee of £15 million plus a further £5 million in add-ons. Elsewhere it's reported that the deal includes a sell-on of circa 20 per cent and a buyback clause.
Southampton have also agreed terms for the former England U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and U21 international but the 21-year-old has opted to join the Blues and is expected to undergo a medical on Wednesday with personal terms not believed to be a stumbling block.
Delap, son of former Stoke long throw expert Rory, was poached from Derby County’s youth set-up by City in 2019.
Since then, he has spent time on loan at Stoke, Preston and last season Hull City where he scored eight times in 26 starts and six sub appearances.
For his parent club, the 6ft 1in tall frontman, who is contracted to City until the summer of 2026, has made two sub appearances in the Premier League as well as four cup appearances, scoring three goals.
Delap is the third member of last season’s Tigers side to be mentioned in connection with the Blues this summer with Town having made a double bid for winger Jaden Philogene and central defender Jacob Greaves.
In October, Blues boss McKenna revealed he had changed his regular backline for Hull’s visit to Portman Road to deal with Delap’s threat, bringing in George Edmundson for Cameron Burgess.
“Cameron’s fine, I just wanted to put George in tonight,” he said. “We thought he’s been training really well, has played really well in the cup competitions and I thought his qualities tonight against Liam Delap would be really important.
“There are not many more powerful runners than George against one of the more powerful runners in the league.”
Town have been in the market for another central striker ahead of their return to the Premier League to compete with George Hirst.
The Blues made an offer ultimately worth €25 million (£21.1 million) to Panathinaikos for striker Fotis Ioannidis a fortnight ago which was their second bid but like the first that was rebuffed.
There had been no progress on that front since then and the Blues evidently moved on to another option. Ioannidis is expected to join Serie A Bologna.
Meanwhile, former Blues striker Kieffer Moore, 31, who ended last season back on loan with Town from AFC Bournemouth and scored seven times, is understood to be interesting Sheffield United.

He'll be a really great signing. Sell on of 20% plus buyback seems very steep considering the price. If they are going to have all that, then we should pay based on milestones too. None of these players are proven Premier League players, so the price really should reflect that. I back KM to pick players that he feels will be top Prem players. I'm not being negative about the business we are doing, it just sounds like the mafia to me. They take all of the smaller clubs most promising players send them out on loan for years to similar sized clubs then sell them with a 20 sell on clause and a buyback option. The only value they add is the coaching. That's why I'd love to see if with KM and MA and the owners, maybe we could muscle in on them just a little bit. We probably have to get used to selling our players like Brighton have been doing.

A lot of young players coming in which is great as we will need more energy in the premier league.think the gaffer is looking for plenty of pace and power which will be a great watch also well done Town.

So the average cost of an untried / unproven “PL” is circa £20m What price, Davis, Hirst?

Those who are a bit apprehensive of our new signings (apart from Ben Johnson) having no PL experience should recall that as a former first team coach at Man Utd, a top end PL club, Kieran has had a close up insight into the qualities required to be a successful PL player. We are all well aware of his coaching and tactical ability and his man management skills so I have little doubt that he will successfully improve top level Champoinship players into more than competent players at PL level

I’m pretty sure Kieran has targeted these 3 players and asked Ashton to deliver. If we get all three I’m confident about the clubs strategy.

I imagine if these moves come off that we’ll be as popular at Hull, as Charlton and Newcastle were with us 20’ish years ago with Herman, Holland, Bent & Ambrose all on their toes.

I don’t think Ashton / McKenna have made a single duff signing yet in their time at the club. So hopefully we can “ trust the process”(Ashton).

churchmans81 The difference is that we are paying decent fees and not vultures circling like Charlton. Newcastle were fine, they paid decent fees. It just goes to show, one season in the Championship and suddenly we're buying all the players we couldn't compete for last season.

Looks like we're trying to get the whole of the Hull team from last season! :) Welcome aboard Liam...just score goals.

Good signing. Strength and pace and with Hutchinson, Burns and Broadhead we have skill in the bags full. We are obviously going with the we will score more than you approach. I like it.

Be great if the two Hull lads join as well i'm sure that Ashton and the owners have their eyes on the purse and the in and outs of financial regulations to keep our heads afloat unlike Sheepshanks who went for expensive flops on silly contracts and led us to administration and the terrible decline that we fans have had to endure for so many years until of course a certain young Irishman appeared to sit beside Mr Ashton and produce what has been a godsend.

£150m PL money, £105m in shares sold, shirt and ticket sales, player sales etc. etc. Delap qualifies for U21s so not part of the 25 man squad list so I think there is room for another striker.

I wasn't expecting hdalky to leave so my transfer window bingo card only has CM (maybe someone like Tonali) left on it. That being said, I think luongo might well surprise us all again this season. Keep slicker as #2 and try to grab a decent free agent as backup?

ArnieM I’m not sure if you’re using sarcasm or just being an idiot with your last comment in quotation. “Hopefully we can trust the process” - Ashton he certainly hasn’t failed to deliver yet and got us a million for Ahadme. Don’t really think all this needs quotations next to his comment now with two promotions in two years and way ahead of the owners schedule tells me enough.
