Town Working on Deal to Sign Burnley Keeper
Saturday, 13th Jul 2024 13:39

Town are working on a deal to sign Kosovo international keeper Arijanet Muric from Burnley.

The Blues have been on the lookout for a new number one following the departure of Vaclav Hladky, who left the club earlier this month having been unable to agree terms on a new deal at Portman Road.

TWTD can confirm national reports that the Blues have made a move for the 25-year-old and are currently working on the switch but with the deal not yet done.

According to The Athletic, a fee of £8 million plus £2 million in add-ons has been agreed between the clubs with a medical having been pencilled in.

Swiss-born Muric joined Manchester City’s youth set-up from Zurich-based Grasshoppers in 2015 and while at the Etihad spent spells on loan at NAC Breda, Nottingham Forest, Girona, Willem II and Adana Demirspor in Türkiye.

Having made five Carabao Cup appearances for City, the 6ft 6in tall glovesman joined Burnley on a four-year deal in the summer of 2022 was a member of the Clarets side which won the Championship in 2022/23, a season in which he was named in the PFA Team of the Year.

Last season, Muric made 10 Premier League starts for the Lancashire side - all in the final couple of months of the season - in addition to four games in cup competitions.

Overall, he has made 52 appearances for the Clarets, keeping 21 clean sheets.

A latter-day Paul Cooper or Roy Bailey, Muric has saved eight of 26 penalties over his career, including one from England skipper Harry Kane while in action for Kosovo in a Euros qualifier.

If the deal is confirmed, then Muric will become Town's second Kosovo international following Bersant Celina. The keeper has won 38 full caps, having previously made one U21 appearance for Montenegro.

Portman Road’s keeping ranks could be set for a major overhaul this summer following Hladky’s departure and Muric’s likely signing. Hladky has been linked with Banik Ostrava and Slavia Prague back in his home country.

Christian Walton could potentially move on for first-team football, while Cieran Slicker has said the next stage of his development is a move on loan with Scottish clubs Kilmarnock, Ross County and Partick Thistle all believed to be keen.

The Blues had previously been linked with Brighton’s Carl Rushworth, while Luton’s Thomas Kaminski.

I think all those people saying "Burnley fans love him etc" need to go and take a look at their forum, it's VERY split on how they view him. I still maintain we need to be very careful with this guy, not only is he prone to errors, which even pro Burnley fans admit, but he also apparently had some "nightclub incident " hanging over him and has now gone AWOL from pre season training, does he really sound like our normal addition ?

Been a bit distracted with all things England, but just wanted to let BeattiesBackPocket and Blues1 know that I'm not getting my keepers confused trust me.

It was definitely Muric. I was keeping a keen eye on it as I had Trafford in goal in my fantasy football team as he was dirt cheap and thought he’d get points for making lots of svaves (it’s the Telegraph version), then Muric got his spot 2/3rds of the way through the season and I was watching it keenly, wanting to know if I had to transfer out Trafford or whether Muric would stick around. He got dropped in it by his defence many times playing out from the back, so it's not all on him, but just watch the Brighton game… it was an ouch moment when he airkicked and missed the ball & it stuck with me. I’m sure the club know what they are doing, it just seems alot of Money to pay for a player, when we might have been able to find the right deal with Vaz (Voz might also wanna go back to Czech for his family..we don't know). Just my feeling that Muric might not be the answer and that we're shelling out too much money for him. It wasn't that long ago we were picking up the likes of Geroge Hirst for £1.75m, Broadhead for £1.5m and Mass and Axel on Frees! Just feels like we had a good keeper in Vaz and if we were gonna upgrade, Burnley's keeper might not be a winner. If only we can take the Georgian keeper from Valencia!

Vaz has done us proud but he's not the genius with his feet that some seem to see him as. Vaz could pull off a decent save and was acceptable with the ball at his feet. The couple of clangers that Muric suffered early in his Prem tenure were serious but he seemed to have ironed them out. One thing that Muric could give us over Vaz is commanding the box. I never felt comfortable when Vaz had to come to collect crosses and corners. He just didn't have the physical presence and would often get blocked off easily and flap/punch at the ball, not very convincingly at that.
