Blues 'Preparing Move' For Sunderland's Clarke Tuesday, 23rd Jul 2024 19:38 Town are reported to be ready to make a bid for Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.
According to iNews, the Blues are preparing a move for the 23-year-old, who the Black Cats are said to value at around £18 million, although other sources claim £25 million.
We understand there is something in the reported interest with Town looking to add to their left-sided forward ranks this summer, a deal to sign Hull City’s Jaden Philogene having recently fallen through, the former England U21 international instead opting to rejoin his previous club Aston Villa.
York-born Clarke joined the Leeds United academy in 2009 and went on to make his first steps in senior football with the Whites in 2018, going on to make five starts and 20 sub appearances, scoring two goals.
His performances for the West Yorkshiremen led to an £8,500,000 move to Tottenham in July 2019, after Town boss Kieran McKenna had left the North Londoners.
Spells on loan back at Leeds, QPR, Stoke and Sunderland followed before the switch to Wearside was made permanent in July 2022, signing a four-year deal.
Tottenham are reported to have a 40 per cent sell-on from that deal, although we understand the percentage is actually 25 per cent.
Lazio, West Ham United and Southampton have previously been linked with Clarke, who scored 15 times and recorded four assists last season.
Overall for Sunderland, the former England U20 international has made 88 starts and four sub appearances, scoring 26 times.

25million seems a lot of money for a good prospect who's unproven at the highest level but in McKenna i trust.

Would be an excellent addition but only if we can get him for around 15 million. I would like Szmodics too plus cover for Davis and Morsy

If we have two Clarkes in the team - expect a few good days at the office :)

This would be an excellent signing. I am really not that excited about Szmodics. Yes he was impressive last season, but up until then he'd been average. I'd trust McKenna if we signed him, but the Jack Clarke deal is much more exciting and important in my opinion.

Tongue in cheek here but do we actually have any scouts that work on the continent, or is all our business going to be via the domestic transfer markets? Clarke's a good player, I'd get him in if possible, but transfer fees area always inflated when you buy within the prem/champ, and surely it pays to look into Europe for additions at some point? Appreciate the current model has worked thus far, but we do need to cast the net a little wider - there's some gems out there, and you won't be driven out of a deal due to club's unrealistic expectations, fee wise.

It is ridiculous monopoly money. However, considering who we've spent 20m on 25m for a lad with so much talent is an absolute snip. I'd be surprised if a more established club didn't come in for him. Can't see this happening.

His style of play reminds me alot of Kyran Dyer but not in the same class if it wasn't for injuries Dyer could have been world class his performances playing for Newcastle along side Alan Shearer were at times breathtaking.

Can't understand people rather having Szmodics over Clarke, huge difference in ability (though admittedly we will probably pay a premium for that difference) Clarke goes straight in, Szmodics a squad player.

Got to agree with McK and Ashton’s transfer policy of buying young and hungry players with a point to prove from other PL clubs rather than old has beens looking for a last pay day who we would be lumbered with in the championship if we were relegated after one season and who we have to pay to get rid of and let go on free transfers. Sammy szmods being the exception as slightly older but is a good championship level player so could keep if relegated

The Lazio bid for Clarke includes a "series" of friendly matches.

Yeah, but 25 million. What planet are these clubs on. o.K. I'm aware that just as we would want top dollar for one of our players it appears that the gap between the real top players price and those that clubs of a lesser status deem their best players is shrinking to where top players are 50, 60 or 70 million whereas they used to top 100 million, but those totally unproven are going for 20 or 25 million. Hope we get him or Smod but whoever it is we don't pay over the odds. I'm sure we won't. But do we lose out for not paying the going rate ?

26 goals from 88 games is a decent return from a wide player.

McK must have faith in Morsy stepping up to prem. I certainly think he will do OK. Morsy and Mass lack pace but they can both keep the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if McK has plans to bring Taylor in more. We will definitely see some bids for one or two centre mids in next couple of weeks though.

other clubs and agents know we are spending and are ''pushing it'' , M A is good at his job , but things seem to be moving slower now, having to really work hard to get the signings done ,think it will end with last day scrambles unfortunately, had hoped to see us in a position to hit the ground running so to speak before the first game .
