McKenna Tight-Lipped on Szmodics
Saturday, 3rd Aug 2024 15:53

Town boss Kieran McKenna remained tight-lipped when quizzed on the Blues protracted move for Blackburn striker Sammie Szmodics.

TWTD revealed that Town were in discussions with Rovers more than three weeks ago with the Lancastrians having turned down a number of bids, the latest earlier this week £8 million plus £2 million in add-ons.

Yesterday, Rovers boss John Eustace said talks were continuing between the clubs but McKenna wouldn’t be drawn into discussing the situation.

“I never speak individually about any players, never have done, players from other clubs,” the Northern Irishman said.

“The club are working really hard to strengthen the team, strengthen the squad. That’s ongoing in several different areas and we’ll hope that will progress well over the next few weeks.”

As is usual during windows, the club is working on a number of targets simultaneously.

“Always, you can’t be working on one thing at a time, the club aren’t, we’re all working really, really hard on different targets in different positions and that’s just the process that a team in our position has to go through,” McKenna added.

“We’re happy with the players that we’ve brought in, we think they’re all good additions for the group and we, of course, are hoping to bring in more players to strengthen the group and we’ll hope to do that as soon as possible, but while always placing the utmost importance on bringing in the right player, the right character who can help us now but also be the right fit for the medium and longer terms as well.”

We just .need to be patient, I'm sure we'll have a couple more in before the Liverpool game and hopefully another 3/4 before the window closes.

No Bazza and it's true. He's not going around with a mard on like people are suggesting. He wants more in, he understands the process and this being normal for summer. And that's it.

Is Szmodics really Premier League quality? In my honest opinion I don't think he is. He has had one good season which we are rightly trying to take advantage of by getting as much as we can for him but he is 29 next month and has reached his peak I can't see him scoring more than 9 Premier League goals if he does join you lot.

I'm not sure!
I am sure gho that blackburn are taking the pist!
I hope the club says take it or leave it!
No way imo is smzodics worth more than what we have offered 10mill(8m+add ons)
Deffo think he would be a good signing! I'd love to the club to go back to blacburn and say 8m no add ons take it or leave it

Given that he was the top scorer in the Championship (with a high conversion rate of chances scored) - he should be able to make that leap. But I do agree with you- 9-12 goals in the Premiership would probably be expected. Players who've scored for fun in the Championship have really struggled at that higher level.

8 million pounds plus add ons for a (soon to be) 29 year old striker is a superb deal for Blackburn. I can't see why they haven't snapped that up and moved on as quickly as possible.

You can say that about all the Town players are they Prem players,

Is Chaplin better than Szomdics or Delap better than Hurst, we will know end of season who can hold their own in a division so much harder than the Championship, or as I expect they will improve as the season goes on and have enough to keep Town in the Prem

For me the worry is the depth of the squad cause fielding the U21 as there is not enough senior players

Venky's are trying to get as much as they can for him like they have with others. But like I've said before if you offer 12m you will get him but the deadline is this weekend for a deal to be done if it's not done I can see him starting against Derby Friday night which I'm going to leaving work at 12 to get up there and can't wait for the season to start I'm buzzing and hopefully we can have a much better season and beat Norwich in the 2nd game of it COYR

If szmodics scored 9 in the premier league I'd take that, if we have say 4 score around 9 we'd have a good chance of staying up,

People are talking like szmodics is an out and out striker he’s not?? Cambsrover you should know that being a ‘fan’ he’s a number 10 or attacking midfield player not an out and out striker. If you’re still getting 8 or 9 goals from midfield that’s a great season I’m not really sure why people are thinking he’s going to be a player to score 20 plus every season.

He played as a central striker for us last season playing with Dolan and Gallagher/Sigurdsson on the wings because we didn't have an out and out striker but yes he is an attacking midfielder naturally. But I really can't see him scoring a lot in the Prem. Just wish it was done and dusted as sick of hearing about him.

Please let’s buy Whittaker from Plymouth. Good age, good talent and a prolific goalscorer. A good buy at £10 million.

Slightly concerned how long this one is taking to wrap up. Personally I’d walk away as Blackburn clearly don’t want to negotiate. Jack Clarke would be a much more suited player who will only get better, either way with Broadhead injured you feel we need a Left sided number 10 before the Liverpool game. Additionally we need a CM (Luongo will struggle at this level) maybe Sheaf? and a right sided CM (Wolfenden will be ripped apart) this I feel needs an experienced player. Then where’s the cover for Burns? Another striker also needed as Hurst looks in a bad place. Hopefully before Liverpool we do get 3 or more through the door but it looks unlikely atm. Squad is lacking depth and quality, it will be nothing short of a miracle for the current squad to compete in the EPL but KM is another breed who is capable of achieving the unthinkable (which he already has done last season).
