McKenna: Whymark a Name I'd Heard a Lot About Friday, 1st Nov 2024 16:19 Blues boss Kieran McKenna has paid tribute to club legend Trevor Whymark, who died yesterday, aged 74.
Whymark was with Town from 1967 until 1979, scoring 104 goals in 322 starts and 13 sub appearances, famously netting four times in the 4-0 UEFA Cup thrashing of Lazio at Portman Road in 1973. He also scored four times against West Brom in the 7-0 victory and, again in the UEFA Cup, against Swedish side Landskrona. He is the club’s all-time sixth top goalscorer.
“He's a name I've heard plenty about, not just in the last couple of days but over the last few years as well,” McKenna said. “And a big part of a record-breaking team for the football club.
“Even when we were in League One, there was a reason why we were getting 30,000 crowds and it wasn't because of me, it wasn't because of the new ownership, but it is because of a massive fanbase and love for the football club.
“And a lot of that fanbase and a lot of that love for the football club can be dated back to those successful teams that Ipswich had under the two Sirs.
“And I think all of us have got a lot to be thankful for to those teams, those players and those managers for laying down the foundations for the football club. And I'm sure it'll be very well attributed this weekend to a legend of the club.”

The "Two Sirs" were also responsible not only for the great teams but also especially Bobby the stadium that we sit in. Alf got us going and Bobby propelled us forward essentially paying for the two side stands which only now are really paying for themselves. The old ground, with just seats, would be like Luton is. Small and unproductive. Sheepshanks and George gave us the North and Churchman stands. We are only now really benefiting from them. 23 years later. If you want to know what Portman Road was like 60 years ago look around it now. Most of the lower stands are much as they were then, just standing with seating in the West stand lower -upper ALL the upper stands are from the time of Bobby and George. Thanks to them and the Cobbolds and David Sheepshanks.

Trevor was a great bloke and terrific player for us. 100 goals in tier 1 for a 1:3 scoring rate. I was lucky enough to be at the Lazio and WBA games where he scored 4 apiece. Marvellous days. Some of todays EPL stars with their diving and bling could learn from how Trevor handled himself. KMcK mentions the two Sirs and Flykick rightly adds GB and DS for what they also did for the club. Talking of the stadium they helped build, far before the new North and South Stands or the extended West, incredibly, we smashed crowd attendance records successively all the way to 38000 v Leeds. If we still had standing a la the old days in the lower tiers of SBR and SAR we’d be seeing 40,000 crowds: I’m sure that would also make Trevor smile.

We have to be careful here, did not the new stands have a very bad financial affect on the clubs finances to say the least........
