Sheffield United Eyeing Woolfenden Tuesday, 7th Jan 2025 20:25 TWTD understands Sheffield United have renewed their interest in Blues central defender Luke Woolfenden.
The Blades were previously keen on Woolfenden in January 2020 during manager Chris Wilder’s first spell at Bramall Lane in the Premier League, but with the Blues making it clear he wasn’t for sale.
The 26-year-old, a key man in the back-to-back promotion side, has returned to the Town team for the last three matches having been out of favour for much of the first half of the season following the signing of Dara O’Shea.
However, the Blues added another defender, Ben Godfrey, to their squad on loan from Atalanta earlier in the week with the twice-capped-England international able to play either right-back or right centre-half, much like Axel Tuanzebe, who is closing in on a return from his hamstring injury.
We understand the Championship’s third-placed side are yet to make an approach and it remains to be seen whether the Blues would consider either a permanent or loan offer for the academy product, who is contracted until this summer with the club no option for an additional season.

Can Sheff Utd afford him whilst in the Championship? I doubt it.

CBMTOBWMMBFG. The reason woolfie has played the last 3 games is down to 2 things. 1. The change in formation. (Also why Greaves has replaced Burgess)2. Bcse Tuanzebe is injured. If he wasnt then Oshea would be playing in the middle with axel and greaves either side of him. Woolfie has done, well those 3 games but isn't the answer long term. Fa t is, some1 form our defence needs to leave now we've signed Godfrey. Remember, we rarely tend to have a cb on the bench, unless injuries force us to. So it's be impossible to keep every one of those central defenders(would be 6 if we don't sell), happy, with only 3 places to play for, or 2 if we revert to 4 at the back. Of all of those we could sell, im afraid Woolfie is the most obvious one.

Linkboy - any reason you marked me down?...you state he (Woolfie) looks more comfortable playing in a back 3 but I've more or less said the same thing, playing in a back 5. As for Greentractorboy - give up mate, you haven't a clue!

'back 3' - of central defenders I should state.

I like Woolfy and think he has done well for us, but do think it is an area of the pitch we have cover so if the fee was right between £ 10-15m we should consider. I don’t see Sheff U offering that though.

CBMTOBWMMBG: ..and for years a few blue tinted respected twtd posters have swooned over this player. Talking him up like he's done kind of awesome CB. I've just given the alternative opinion. Many people I've spoken to about him are of the same opinion and are also more condemning re his attitude, arrogance being one description often ascribed to him. I, myself have never posted that about him, focusing instead in his playing attributes. He's an average defender, nothing more, but I do feel HE thinks he's much better. You day there's more to being a defender than heading ability, physical presence etc etc. Well I'd counter that and suggest given ability to leak goals so easily is the very reason why McKenna has sought to bring in much better CB's. Woolfenden has spent more of the season not in the team, than he has in it. He's obviously not up for a fight for his place as now wants to leave. Fine hood luck to him. But if some people put him on a pedestal, and i fail to see what justification there is for that, I'll say so. So if it's bern going on for "years", it's because there's Woolfenden love in has bern going on years. If he's as good as some say he is, why has there been absolutely no approaches for him in all that time, surely such an outstanding, calm on the ball, easy on the eye, defender who is named in " Team of the Week", every week and scoring 8-9/10 every week as some of our fans appear to think he is, he should have been snapped up years ago, and would have played in all our games this far? There's a reason why he's not, even given, as you say, " McKenna likes him". Good luck Woolfenden in your new venture if you do leave. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on.

It’s all up to Woofy at the end of the day!! If he wants more game time he could go, even though he’s played recently and played very well. It comes down to the player at the end of the day if he sees it as a good move for him, or stay put and keep fighting for his place.

Heard that he has asked to leave. In which case we cant hold him against his will. Good player, but if he's not happy here what can we do. The club is growing and needs better players. Good luck Wolfy where ever you end up. A great servant to the club!

I think fair play to Woolfy, all signs point to him wanting to go and play football week-in-week-out. Time to spread his wings. Not everyone wants to have the 'local boy' tag for their whole career. Whatever is decided, he'll have my backing.

If he wants to go, he will go. There is no room for sentimentality in this league. If we stay up, and I still believe we will, it will be by the skin of our teeth. Improvements in quality will have to be made, so no one in this team is indispensable. Players will have to move on either to improve quality or create funds for further purchases. This is life in the Premier League.

Blues, Arnie - it would totally understandable for Woolfie to be fed-up. Other players have been bought in who will be earning vast sums more than him. And he may feel he’s of a similar standard and should be playing / earning more. These are key reasons footballers move on - money and desire to play. As for why he’s playing now. Simple. He’s rated as both needed and good enough by the boss. And he’s not injured! How long he continues to be selected, who knows. Arnie, I’m sorry that you can’t see the qualities Woolfie has, and only see his undoubted weaker areas. Thankfully, McKenna doesn’t care about team of the weeks, or man if the match ratings or transfer rumours. He just selected him for two years as a key player in double promotion winning teams. Is he what we need going forward, maybe, maybe not, but he has been an important player for us.

Some of the comments in here are quite frankly laughable, Woolfy is as good as any other defender we have at the club, he plays comfortably out from the back and shows real determination to get forward. Clearly some view it differently but having been a season ticket holder for many many years, this lad is out and out a real blue and we should do everything to both keep him and play him in the current formation. Godfrey is totally unproven and my friends from across the border state that he is a much better wing back and at times an awful CB, so I’d keep with Woofly all day long.

Where has the news come from that he wants to leave? Or just speculation. Judging him over the last two seasons, I've seen good things and some not so good. Overall I'd say he's a decent championship level defender. He's also done well in the last two matches with the current formation, it remains to be seen if he keeps it up. Personally I'd like to see him stay.

Can't wait for a new thread to start this one is so boring, everyone was quire rightly raving about Burgess and now it's tge boohoo brigade tgat Woofeden is going and then there will be uproar when H Clarke goes and Burns and Chaplin, if these players were deemed good enough we would keep money in bank and play them every week and sign nobody. We are no different to any other football team in world, the idea is to strengthen and progress squads with ability of the standard of league your in and to say Godfrey is not as good as Woolfeden is ridiculous, Godfery has played a huge amount Prem games, was called into England squad and knows the battle needed at the bottom end of table and what's needed for survival, a great peice of business once again by Ashton and Mckenna. Woolfeden, Burns, H Clarke, Hamadi and Chaplin all have sell on value at present and especially Chaplin would be a mega signing for someone like Wrexham on loan, Mark down if you like it's just my opinion no need for abuse, we can't keep everyone, it be good some our players go and get games at decent clubs rather than just going to Colchester United as used be case, now seems be Chesterfield. If we can get Doak (Slicker could be pivotal in persuading him, Scotland team mates) that's a real statement signing along with Phillogene and new striker, what a squad, I agree a solid left back be good but lots clubs looking at that position, I think we will play Greaves will play there (which he can) O'Shea right and Burgess in middle in 3 and Davis and Godfrey in front of them. Cajuste, Phillips Hutchinson or right, Doak or Phillogene, J Clarke on left Szmodicks or Broadhead in 10 Delap What a great looking team sheet example Walton O'Shea (C) Burgess Greaves Godfrey Davis Cajuste Phillips Hutchinson Szmodicks or new signing Delap Subs Morsy Broadhead Townsend J Clarke Muric Johnson New signings Now that's a realistic team with Hurst and Tunazabe to return from injury also. Before abuse if not players I've said what would your teams be and who would you loan or sell? We all want Prem survival so let's make this thread interesting and debate opinions without nastiness and rudeness.

Or Walton Godfery O'Shea (C) Greaves Davis Cajuste Phillips Broadhead Szmodicks in 10 New signing on left Delap Subs Muric Slicker Johnson Burgess Townsend Morsy J Taylor Tunazbe (starts if fit) J Clarke Hurst Broadnead or Szmodicks Ogbene New signings Good squad, think Phillips needs run with Cajuste without being sentimental Phillips has more Prem experience and I think he be better there as much as Morsy done okay he cost us points at end of games (I know he scored at Southampton). Be nice if some old game play in FA Cup.
Linkboy13 added 16:02 - Jan 8
Morsy for me any day leads by example gives his heart and soul to the club and is also a good player. Until Phillips starts showing the same attitude and desire he will be on the bench reputations count for nothing and if he was any other player without the hype most people would be saying the same . Phillips is a class act when his attitude is right and should walk into our team but like at West Ham he seems to have fallen out of love for the game and is going through the motions.

He’s overcome the lethargy that saw him make mistakes, and now a valuable player for us for sure. But rumour, yes rumour, is that he wants to leave. IF that is the case, then best GONE for everyone’s sake.
Leejames99 added 16:26 - Jan 8
@gsoly I meant sell to Wrexham sorry , he just the player who could carry on their journey to Premiership. Chaplin too good at league 1/Championship level to sit on bench in Prem with town and I can't see hin getting many minutes with new signings etc I'm very aware it's not Fifa, Chaplin has a value to sell at present.
Leejames99 added 16:32 - Jan 8
Think Phillips needs run of games now with Cajuste, there just isn't a world where Morsy is better than Phillips who let's not forget is on loam from the league champions and was England's player of year, I think he is enjoying it at Town, always smiling, Morsy has done ok but cost us more points than Muric it's well had blinkers on to it because he is a town legend now, Leicester, Fulham etc no time for sentiment now in my opinion and Morsy be great sub to come on for Cajuste or Phillips maybe but gives away so many fouls that's always a worry.
ArnieM added 16:45 - Jan 8
Johnwarksshorts: This has come from a close friend of the player. Which is probably why we have acted quickly and brought in Godfrey. I wish LW no harm. And I do actually wish him well if he does move on in this window. That’s me done on this thread now.
