Philogene at Town For Medical
Thursday, 9th Jan 2025 10:40

Blues target Jaden Philogene is at Portman Road undergoing his medical ahead of his £20 million plus add-ons move to Town from Aston Villa.

The deal to sign the 22-year-old was agreed last night with the player set to sign a four-and-a-half-year contract. A formal announcement is expected later today once the medical is completed.

Philogene has long been a Town target with links first surfacing in the summer of 2023 before the England U21 international moved from Aston Villa to Hull City.

In July last year, the Blues had agreed a joint-deal with the Tigers for the forward and teammate Jacob Greaves with the Philogene side of the proposed move understood to be worth £18 million and the player having agreed personal terms at Portman Road.

However, his former club Villa had 72 hours within which to exercise matching rights as part of the deal they had agreed with the Tigers the previous summer, which they did and Philogene returned to Villa Park for £13 million - the Midlanders also taking advantage of their 30 per cent sell-on - with the forward signing a five-year contract.

But Philogene made only three starts - two in the Premier League - and 11 sub appearances for Villa in the first half of the season and speculation regarding a swift exit began to surface before the January window opened.

Town and Everton, another of the clubs interested in the summer, both made approaches with the Blues ultimately stealing a march on the Toffeemen.

The Londoner reportedly agreed to sign for the Blues following a personal phone call with manager Kieran McKenna.

The Blues have been in the market for a number of forwards this window with a centre-forward a priority and two players for the roles behind on the list.

Earlier in the week, Town were reported to be readying a deal worth £30 million for 23-year-old Brazilian striker Igor Jesus, who is currently with Botafogo in his home country, however, that’s believed to be overstating the interest as it stands.

We understand Jesus is a player Town have known about for some while and like - as is the case with a number of Premier League clubs with Arsenal, Fulham and Brentford also having been linked - but is currently one on a list with the Blues monitoring the situation.

On Friday, Liverpool rebuffed a £16 million offer for Scotland international forward Ben Doak, who is currently on loan at Middlesbrough, with Crystal Palace also having made a bid.

We understand the Blues are maintaining their pursuit of the 19-year-old with the Eagles similarly continuing their interest and the Reds said to want a fee between £25 and £30 million.

Why do I feel we have been mugged off here ? Because we have. Villa have totally played this situation. Great business from them of course. They had an option and could see an easy way to make 7 or 8 million. They clearly didn't want the boy, they sold him to Hull and then haven't played him. I guess they promised him a lot to get him to re sign but he has had 6 months in limbo. This could work either of 2 ways. He will either be very driven to prove Villa and the doubters who say he didn't want to join us wrong or he is now short of football and short of confidence and we get the hype without the output we want. However I trust MA and KMc based on their previous transfer dealings and let's hope this is another piece in the jigsaw to safety. COYB

McKenna always told me be careful of this one
He'll go around breaking Norwich hearts
McKenna always told me you're gonna fall in love
When you see him on the ball
His feet just move so fast

Philogene is the one
Gets the ball, has some fun
And now he's gonna score

Whatever Villa did or do is up to them, but what we know is that KMcK really likes Philogene, wanted him at the club in the Summer & still wants him here now. He went for him ahead of Odobert & J Clarke in the Summer, because he sees him fitting into the formation, style & work ethic that he wishes for his team.
I don't mind too much that he hasn't played many minutes for them, because he had a knock & they have a top squad with eccellent players. We wanted him for a specific role, whereas they wanted him back because he had done well, so tbey didn't want to lose out on the clause they had over him.
He predominently plaued left side for Hull, but was used on the right for Villa, so we should take that into account when assessing his gsmetime there. Omari has played on the left a few times for us this season, but you wouldn't be raving about him as a £20m PL player based on those performances only, as he has done his best work on the right & in the centre.
KMcK likes having wide attackers operating on the oppoaide side to their preferred foot, as they can cut in for a pass or curled shot to the top corner.
I think Philogene will do well for us, because our manager knpws what he wants & how this player can provide his best performances.

Apologies for the many typos; using an old phone, with old eyes, while travelling, doesn't make it easy.

Villa probably have not much money on this after wages and fees. What is clear is that we are paying 2 million more 6 months later. Effectively Villa took a fairly safe punt. If Philogene was very successful at Villa, great. As it happens, he is worth even more than when they bought him, so there is even a small profit there perhaps.

We are like a dog with a bone when it comes to getting a player we really want.

Welcome young man to a great club, but can’t see how in 6 months of doing nothing at AV he is valued at a higher price.
Does anyone know what the injury was that he had that people are saying?

@CharlieWoodsNotebook

That is absolutely sick man hahaha I love it!

A variation could be:

Philogene, is the one,
gets the ball, starts to run,
now he's scoring for fun

Steelmonkey Value is derived from more than quality of the player. Contract length is a key factor and so is market demand. All other things being equal, if Everton were desperate to sign him and were willing to offer 20, then we would have to at least match that even if one could argue that Philogene is actually standing still or gone backwards.
He was on a 5 year deal with Villa, it was probably less at Hull.

Villa were perfectly within their right to hijack the deal in the summer. But this is where FFP doesn't make sense to me. Offering a 5-year deal to a player who you're offloading again in 6 months purely because spreading the cost of the deal over 5 years amortises the cost. I imagine Philogene is not going to have fond memories of that time. He's missed out on 6 months of top coaching under KM's wing.

Hopefully he has now found a home and is ready to kick on.

Time to forget the past transfer shenanigans which were neither of our nor Philogene's making.
What we want of him is to help us win sufficient matches so we stay in the Premiership.

Hope we weren't going to get him...looks like we are, can we afford another £20M for a player whom has played well in the Championship but what games he has played in the Premiership looks lightweight?

The only thing that worries me is how we stand on ffp.Whilst I have the utmost confidence in Mark Ashton I would hate to see us relegated on the basis of a points deduction and would certainly expect the FA to punish us if able
Maybe Phil or someone can explain how it works
