Town Agree Fee For West Brom Keeper
Monday, 3rd Feb 2025 11:32

Town are closing in on the signing of West Brom keeper Alex Palmer.

A £2 million fee has been agreed between the clubs with Palmer travelling to Suffolk to undergo a medical this afternoon.

The Blues’ goalkeeper situation has been unsettled all season with summer signing Aro Muric putting in inconsistent displays and making way for Christian Walton before Christmas, the former Brighton man then suffering a groin injury at Liverpool just over a week ago.

Kosovo international Muric, who cost the Blues £10 million from Burnley, returned on Saturday but made crucial errors as Town were beaten 2-1 by bottom side Southampton.

Kidderminster-born Palmer, 28, came through the Baggies youth system and has spent time on loan at his hometown club, Oldham, Notts County, Plymouth, Lincoln and Luton.

For Albion, the 6ft 3in tall glovesman has made 104 starts, although none of those in the Premier League, while he won caps with the England U16s as a youngster.

Palmer, who had 18 months on his contract at the Hawthorns, hasn’t played for the Baggies in the FA Cup this season, so assuming all goes well with the medical could make his debut at Coventry on Saturday.

So with downes looking unlikely and a new keeper in do we think that is it for the transfer window.

Shame we didn't just sort Hladky's situation out in the first place..was arguably the best keeper in the championship last season.

Hopefully Palmer is now the answer, allbeit about 6 months too late.

Another keeper to come in and be slaughtered on here no doubt, people don't get that it's very different in the PL to the Championship. The issue with the team is not just the keeper it's that we dont have the strength in depth of all the other teams including the other two that came up who already had experience.

This keeper sounds a good but. First choice for me.
I still believe that Muric will come good and be a great keeper in time.
Sadly, we cannot risk him anymore this season, makes too many basic mistakes.
I would keep him on the bench for the rest of the season and see where we are next season.

Great news on a Monday.
The goalkeeper is the most important player in the team.
It is arguably why we were relegated last time and has cost us many points this season with Muric.

The similarities between Matteo Sereni and Muric are palpable. Zero brain cells between them

I think Jack Clarke played for Sunderland at the beginning of the season, if so he cannot play for another club until next season.

Unfortunately we now appear to have some of the most toxic fans in the PL. Muric has lost his confidence and the way he has been treated by a minority of fans is disgraceful. Morsy is also starting to get the verbal abuse. Hopefully when we return to the Championship the toxic fans will disappear or is it a sign of the times. Our players are struggling with the step up to PL football and the atmosphere within PR this season definitely isn’t helping. A huge shift in the dynamics of our fans or a small minority.
Looking forward to Coventry without the negativity Coyb

Walton's injury may be the reason for this but I personally hope that Muric departs. He may be a good shot stopper but his decision making is awful and he makes far too many costly mistakes.

Wow, some really mean supporters on here!
It's great that a good solid Championship keeper has come in but please remember that Muric is a young human being and still one of our players. Fans are partly responsible for his lack in confidence and now the pundits are jumping on him, let's not forget that Muric has had good games in a town shirt this season, Spurs, Wolves, Arsenal etc and he is not responsible for every goal conceded, he really has become a scapegoat, Walton let in 16 in 6

Sometimes players go to clubs and it doesn't work out, Sanchez from Arsenal to Man Utd, Ramsdale at Aresnal, Mount Chelsea to Man Utd, Phillips Leeds to Man City the list is endless.
If you were being berated online and on TV and in the press/radio for doing your job or making mistakes your confidence would be shot like his.

Yes he has made mistakes too often but please let's stop the berating and be kind, he is as I said still an Ipswich Town player.
Morsy has been awful and gave away goals, nothing sais, same for Davis, Burns too but they get no grief, one thing Morsy has done right this season is say Muric has been made a scapegoat and he really has.

Saying our new signings are runbish is ridiculous, do some of you think we have a divine right to stay in a league we havent been anywhere near for 22 years and were favourite for drop? Who do you think should go down? What players did you expect us to sign?
We have been spoilt with success in 2 seasons and the club are building to have Premiership stability but for that we need an upgrade on players and the best we could buy was the best of the Championship and we have and I wouldn't be surprised to see a top Championship striker come in today.
If we go down then next year the moaners will be thankful we have J Clarke, Hutchinson, Szmodicks, Greaves, O'Shea, Townsend and even Delap and now Palmer (I think we can thank Mowbray for this one)
We are building for future so have bought the best young talent proven in the Championship with good asset value, enhanced the ground and have been really savvy, this season will do the young players good and going back to the Championship if it happens will be beneficial in our progress.
Would you rather watch us winning at Portman Road or struggling all season?

Please have a bit of empathy for Muric and remember their is 11 on pitch and 10 are supposed to orevent shots being taken in first place.

Be kind all, the club is doing well!
Sorry long post but someone had to say it!

Ps J Clarke can't go on loan unless back to Sunderland as he has played for w clubs now.

1/5th of the cost and I bet better than Muric, I had concerns about him when we signed him in the Summer but NOT blues1 :)

Really feel for Muric, his confidence totally destroyed. I'm sure alot of its due to social media. But this signing has to be done. Hopefully Muric will work hard and with guidance and coaching will rediscover his mojo.

It’s been a really odd situation ,for AM came in with a good record but seems to have almost completely lost his bearings on the pitch ! Is it the players in front making life difficult .finding communication a challenge ,OR is it AM hasn’t settled either in the County or at Itfc ?
The end result has been very unreliable performances between the sticks ,and as such it’s cost many deserved points .
KM was diplomatic after S’hamton but plainly underneath feeling very let down by ‘poor goals ‘ — though he didn’t personalise the criticism .
It’s a real shame CW is hurt ,but CS will be a good support and is growing in experience .

This is a very positive signing and shows the club have not thrown in the towel, unlike a few punters on this site. If this goes through, I’d say when Walton is fit, Muric’s days at the club will be numbered. For though, in the interim, waiting for Walton’s return, assuming we’d play Palmer? I’d put Slicker on the bench.

Panic Stations now - all rather too late !
Whoever brought Muric to the Club needs some serious Questioning !!
And anyone thinking next season will be a Breeze need to think again, after giving their Head a huge Wobble !!
Overall a p#ss poor season this, at least to date.
And who can see improvement on the horizon ?

I have no feelings for Muric at all-he is basically incompetent and has almost single handed taken us down------I hope he leaves asap and why it took so long for the penny to drop is amazing----whoever authorised his signing in the first place has to eat the biggest pice of humble pie in the world.

@swoody. Totally disagree. Been home and away all season and the outfielders are working very hard to stay in games but consistently let down by stupid sloppy goals being conceded due to basic goalkeeping errors. He's had one good game down at Brighton, otherwise he's cost us big time against Brentford, Bournemouth, Man Utd, Palace and most disgracefully Sat... the list goes on, and that's even before you count the ones he's been responsible for in the one we won at Wolves or the suicidal playing on the halfway line at the Etihad. And to cap it all he doesn't even look like he wants to bond with the rest of the team let alone the fans. It's just a bad buy and we need to move on asap.
