Town Agree Fee For West Brom Keeper
Monday, 3rd Feb 2025 11:32

Town are closing in on the signing of West Brom keeper Alex Palmer.

A £2 million fee has been agreed between the clubs with Palmer travelling to Suffolk to undergo a medical this afternoon.

The Blues’ goalkeeper situation has been unsettled all season with summer signing Aro Muric putting in inconsistent displays and making way for Christian Walton before Christmas, the former Brighton man then suffering a groin injury at Liverpool just over a week ago.

Kosovo international Muric, who cost the Blues £10 million from Burnley, returned on Saturday but made crucial errors as Town were beaten 2-1 by bottom side Southampton.

Kidderminster-born Palmer, 28, came through the Baggies youth system and has spent time on loan at his hometown club, Oldham, Notts County, Plymouth, Lincoln and Luton.

For Albion, the 6ft 3in tall glovesman has made 104 starts, although none of those in the Premier League, while he won caps with the England U16s as a youngster.

Palmer, who had 18 months on his contract at the Hawthorns, hasn’t played for the Baggies in the FA Cup this season, so assuming all goes well with the medical could make his debut at Coventry on Saturday.

Some contributors have drawn comparisons between Muric and Sereni. I always thought that Sereni was a good keeper that never let us down on the pitch, if his signing was questionable it was because we had just signed Andy Marshall and the feeling was that we didn't need to spend £4.5m on another GK (which was still our record outlay until Omari).

This Club has made some strange decisions this season, this one being another right now.
Slicker surely must soon want a move away !
Do we have a Goalkeeper Coach thrse days, or even a Coach left ?
If so, who are they ?
Not to even mention decent operational and effective Club Scouts - if so, who are they ?

With our current first choice keeper Walton injured and Muric suffering from a complete loss of confidence, we have to sign another keeper. To get one as good as Palmer and for only 2 million is great business. I don't think we've seen the last of Muric though. Although he doesn't deserve to play at the moment because he's made too many costly mistakes, we've also seen that he can be a very good goalkeeper. Also, if we tried to sell him in the summer we would get no where near the 8 million plus he cost us. He needs help and support to rebuild his confidence and I'm sure that Kieran and his staff will provide that.

FWIW… Here’s my West Brom mate’s thoughts on the signing.

“Palmer is a surprise. Good shot stopper. Poor kicking and can struggle to get down quickly’’

Its a shame about Muric, its evident that his confidence is shot to pieces. Didnt help that a small portion in the ground got on his back a number of times on Saturday. Its probably right to bring a new goalie in to be honest.

Im not one to slag off players on here but it's obvious Muric has had a decent enough of games to prove himself but keeps making the same mistakes. We seem to do all of our shopping in the championship and the only way of getting any quality through the door is by way of the loan system. I don't think a goal keeper from the championship is going to save our premier league status unfortunately we have players all over the pitch who are just not Premier league quality financially we are still a top championship club.

All seems very good news, now we need someone else in to score goals apart from Delap, who has now scored 41% of our league goals this season, admitedly from a rather small sample size!

Lets see how Palmer gets on behind are unept defence and midfield between muric and walton we have conceded so many goals so is it both of our keepers or tge other team mebers who offer very little protection ???

Colonel. So ur taking the word of 1 disgruntled west brom fan. Strange how whenever we sign a player, some1 on here knows a fan of their club , who criticises them.
