Manchester United 3-2 Ipswich Town - Match Report
Wednesday, 26th Feb 2025 21:47

Town spurned a golden chance to win at Old Trafford and gain some ground in the relegation battle as they were beaten 3-2 by 10-man Manchester United. Jaden Philogene was gifted his first league goal for Town in the fourth minute by a defensive mix-up, but United went into a 2-1 lead through a Sam Morsy own goal and Matthijs de Ligt rebound. Two minutes before the break, Patrick Dorgu was shown a straight red card for a foul on Omari Hutchinson following a VAR review and Town levelled through Philogene’s second goal, a cross sneaking into the corner of the net. The game looked there for the Blues but after conceding a Harry Maguire header two minutes after the restart, United’s third goal from a set piece, they never seriously threatened to get back on terms at manager Kieran McKenna’s old club.

Town made two changes with former Red Devil Axel Tuanzebe and skipper Morsy returning to the side picked by McKenna, a United U18s and first-team coach before he joined the Blues.

Tuanzebe came back in his usual right-sided defensive role having missed Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Spurs due to a one-match ban. Ben Godfrey, who replaced the DR Congo international at the weekend, dropped out of the squad.

Morsy replaced Kalvin Phillips, who suffered a calf problem against Tottenham and was not in the 20-man party, in midfield with Jens Cajuste fine despite hurting his ankle at the weekend.

United, who had nine first-team squad members injured, made two changes of their own from the team which drew 2-2 at Everton on Saturday with Noussair Mazraoui, who picked up a knock at Goodison Park, and Casemiro dropping to the bench and Leny Yoro and Alejandro Garnacho coming into the XI.

The game started in the heavy rain which had fallen most of the afternoon. And as against Spurs, the Blues began on the front foot, Jack Clarke playing a pass along the 18-yard line for Liam Delap, who took it into the box but scuffed his shot wide, the wet ball perhaps sliding off his foot.

But the Town fans in the corner at that end of the ground didn’t have to wait too long for a goal.

Dara O’Shea hit a long ball for Philogene but beyond the former Aston Villa man and Dorgu should have had an easy job of tidying up. However, the Danish international wing-back knocked it back towards goal but with keeper Andre Onana having advanced to within a few yards of him and Philogene was presented with the simplest chance of his career, tapping into an empty goal from a few feet.

The surprised but grateful Blues supporters delightedly celebrated Town’s first goal at Old Trafford since Chris Kiwomya netted in a 1-1 draw in 1992.

Shell-shocked United looked to hit back and in the 10th minute, a deep Bruno Fernandes corner from the left reached Maguire and Alex Palmer did well to push the ball away to his left. Diogo Dalot’s follow-up looped deep into the Stretford End.

The home side saw most of the ball, although without looking particularly convincing. However, on 22 they levelled.

A harsh free-kick was awarded against Cajuste on the left, the Sweden international having felt he won the ball. Fernandes whipped the ball over and Morsy, under the attention of Rasmus Hojlund, headed into his own goal. Town appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears with VAR confirming the equaliser, a decision which looked correct.

The Blues were making entreaties to referee Darren England at the other end on 25, Maguire appearing to pull back Delap inside the box as the striker held the ball up. But referee England and VAR again ruled against the Blues and a penalty would have been harsh.

And a minute later, United went in front from another Fernandes set piece. Maguire again won the corner delivery from the left, his header was stopped by Palmer, who also got down to his right to save Dalot’s subsequent effort, however, De Ligt was on hand to slam the rebound into the roof of the net.

United had been unconvincing but Town’s defending from set pieces even more so with Maguire having had his earlier opportunity in addition to the two goals.

However, having gained their lead, the home side were looking more at ease and in greater control. On 34 Morsy was booked for a foul on Joshua Zirkzee, the Egypt international’s eighth yellow card of the season with a 10th leading to a two-game ban.

Three minutes later, Philogene gifted the ball to Garnacho on the left, the Argentinian international taking it into the area before being outmuscled by Tuanzebe, unfairly according to the home fans and players but referee England showed no interest. Play continued and Palmer saved Dorgu’s effort from distance.

On 39, Garnacho broke towards the edge of the area in space before Tuanzebe came across to make an inch-perfect sliding challenge that the Manchester United forward clearly felt.

As the half moved into its final five minutes, Dorgu lunged in at Hutchinson on the touchline, catching the former Chelsea man, who was making his 50th start for the club, halfway up his shin.

Referee England initially gave nothing but VAR called him over to the screen and, after a lengthy review, Dorgu was shown a straight red card, the first opposition player to be dismissed during a Town game this season.

The footage was clear, Dorgu caught Hutchinson with his studs up halfway up his shin and once the referee had seen that, there was little doubt Dorgu would be on his way.

United immediately made a change, swapping Garnacho for Mazraoui as they sought to shore things up at the back.

But before the Moroccan had settled into the game, with the half in four minutes of injury time, the Blues got back on terms. Philogene crossed from the right towards Delap in the middle, the striker failed to get to get a touch but the ball curled into the corner of the net to send the Town fans wild once again.

There was just time for one more incident before the break, Hojlund clashing with O’Shea, leaving him on the floor, then trying to drag the Irishman up off the turf with the Dubliner clearly unimpressed. While the Town support called for a second red card, referee England booked both the United forward and Blues defender.

The Town fans cheered the whistle, while the home support booed off the referee, which seemed a little harsh given the nature of the red card.

Despite having been handed the lead so early on, the Blues never looked comfortable, even with United having looked lacking in confidence and belief.

Town’s failure to defend set pieces allowed the Red Devils the lead, before Dorgu’s red card changed the dynamic of the game in the final minutes, Philogene netting his second slightly fortuitous goal of the match.

However, three minutes after the restart, the Blues were made to pay for their weakness on set pieces once again. Fernandes sent over a corner from the right and Maguire was again left unmarked to pick his spot and plant a header beyond Palmer to make it 3-2.

Town looked to hit back again, Delap hitting a shot from just outside the area which deflected off a defender and out for a corner. Leif Davis’s flag-kick was headed away by Maguire.

But the Blues were unconvincing as they sought a second equaliser, although a Philogene strike from just outside the box was blocked

United worked a better chance on the hour, Philogene giving the ball away to Yoro, who got to the byline and crossed to Hojlund, who dummied but with no one behind him. However, Davis slammed it against a United player and not far behind.

Soon after Zirkzee had been booked for delaying a restart in the Blues final third, Cajuste saw an effort blocked.

Town had been disappointing since the break, the early goal appearing to have knocked the stuffing out of the, but in the 65th minute Clarke played in Cajuste on the left of the area and the on-loan Napoli man cut across the six-yard box to Philogene, but the earlier two-goal scorer bundled the ball out at a tight angle. Although it came to nothing, it was the Blues’ best football of the second half.

Town made a double change soon afterwards, Nathan Broadhead and Jack Taylor replacing Hutchinson, who had just undergone treatment for a knock, and Morsy. United swapped Hojlund for Casemiro.

On 73, Town worked a clever corner on the left, Clarke playing a short ball to Philogene as the winger came out from the box and the ex-Hull City man laid it off to Taylor on the edge of the area but the Irish international screwed his shot wide, much to his evident frustration.

The Blues were now seeing most of the ball but without the guile to find a way passed a United defence which was happy to soak up pressure and make the occasional break. And when they did so they looked more threatening than Town, Mazraoui sliding in just too late to reach at Fernandes cross from the left in the 78th minute.

Town, who had continued to make little headway, made another double change in the 81st minute, Davis and Tuanzebe coming off for George Hirst and Ben Johnson with Clarke going to left-back in a 4-2-2-2.

The Blues won three corners in quick succession, O’Shea heading wide at the far post from the third of them, Johnson having sent the ball over.

On 85, Delap challenged Manuel Ugarte strongly and Mazraoui, who had clashed with the Town striker at Portman Road, slammed into the England U21 international with the game briefly threatening to boil over. Referee England awarded a free-kick and booked both Delap and Mazraoui.

With the match in the first of four added minutes, the Blues switched Cajuste for Sammie Szmodics with play subsequently held up as stewards tackled a fan who had run out of the home end towards the pitch. United then switched Zirkzee and Yoro for Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof.

The ball was at the Town end in the closing stages, Johnson picking up a booking for a foul on Fernandes before referee England brought the game to a close.

A deeply disappointing evening for the Blues who will have no better chance to win at Old Trafford than the position they found themselves in at half-time and put in probably their worst 45 minutes of the season, given the context.

Having once again failed to defend a set piece just after the break, they never put the home side under any serious pressure despite the disparity in numbers with the performance lacking drive and guile as the home side dug in and held onto their lead, while looking significantly more dangerous on the break.

Town remain five points plus goal difference from safety following the midweek fixtures with the game another they may look back on as a missed opportunity should they be relegated in May.

Going to do something I've never done before and give points for players performances, for reference, seen from the comfort of my sofa and not in the typical Manchester weather, endured by our magnificent supporters there.

A. Palmer ( 8 ) Two or three top saves, actually kept the score down!
A. Tuanzebe ( 4.5 ) Very average
L. Davis ( 5 ) Average at best, poor crossing, what little there was!
D. O'Shea ( 5.5 ) Been one of our best performers this season, not his best game
J. Greaves ( 5.5 ) Must admit, not totally convinced by him so far, at least still quite young for a central defender.
S. Morsy ( 5.5 ) Great goal (!) no better or worse than most. Somewhat overshadowed by Fernandes, as just about everyone else on the pitch was, just as I expected.
J. Cajuste ( 7 ) For me, the one plus point in the outfield, some real moments of class, unfortunately his team mates not at the same level.
J. Philogene ( 5.5 ) Two lucky goals notwithstanding, another average performer, at least did track back fairly often. Very lightweight for the Premier League ( in stature ).
O. Hutchinson ( 5.5 ) Another average performer, victim of a horror tackle that could easily have broken his leg, looked worse every time I saw it.
J. Clarke ( 6 ) Better than many, got us out of one or two tight spots around our penalty box, but will have had better games in his career so far.
L. Delap ( 5.5 ) We all know the promise, but needs to learn to control the ball properly when it's played to him, and not try and pass it off before he does have it under control. At least I think he and Harry Maguire both enjoyed their physical battle, which I believe HM won on points.

I won't mention subs, non made a great impact.

My general thoughts: A big chance for 3 vital points thrown away. In the second half, way too much sideways and backwards passing to try and open up spaces in the United defence, unfortunately we are not Barcelona. So many crossing opportunities wasted, as highlighted by Robbie Savage. One shot for the keeper to save ( and a dodgy keeper at that ), in the entire 2nd half, says it all.

Man Of The Match: Bruno Fernandes, on a different planet to anyone else on the pitch. May not be saying a lot, but United would be in a very bad state without him.

I'm not normally very critical as I believe the squad has been assembled with one eye on the possibility of a return to The Championship next season. On this performance, correctly so.

Put in perspective this just underlines how big the gap now is. No excuses tonight for all the obvious reasons people have rightly already covered above. Sadly I'm pleased this is the first ticket I've passed up this season (mainly due to work) and I didn't miss a once in a lifetime night. Much respect to all who went.

But really - what are clubs our size meant to do? FFP has had completely the opposite effect it was meant to have. We can't spend enough to pick up the sort of players we need, whilst each season those established shore up their resources to stretch ahead ever further.

Worth noting last year was only the second time since PL was established the three up went straight back down and first time since 1998. Now it's two on the spin and difficult not to see at least Burnley and Sheff Utd or a play off winner not coming straight back down next season too. Can even a club the size of Leeds do it?

The fact it's seeped into the Championship too tho is scary. The parachute payments now really bite for that top two race for several seasons now. At least next season we are in that bracket and I'd say unlikely to do a Luton given our size and not needing to focus on a new ground etc. As I've said on here before - I'm sure the original plan was to get up next season. And we're in a much better position to do that now than we were before last season. Plus I'd think KMc will be less attractive now, particularly given his buy out clause and salary etc. I also think he will be learning massively and may find a way to have a better crack at it with more time to gel a capable squad in the Championship first just like he did in League One, and look what happened with that jump...

Horrible to watch in person. somehow Philogene, who got the two goals, was one of worst on the pitch.

The most frustrated I have felt. At half time it was there for the taking, and yet McKenna obviously told his players to just pass the ball around and whenever we get forward, turn backwards.

The players didn't seem up for it tonight when we had every chance to get the 3 points after the red card.

Palmer made some great saves again keeping the deficit down. Some players also think that they are better than they are and refuse to pass at the best times.

We need far more dynamism in midfield and Morsy is not the answer at this level.

I am confident that once we are relegated, we will have a team primed to compete right at the top next season. But you feel that if we hadn't persevered with Muric and took our chances properly, we could have had a good chance at surviving.

Why are people talking like we are relegated already? Still 30 odd points to play for.
Brilliant to see Muric still getting blame or Godfrey or Phillogene it's terrible, 90% off our losses are down to Davis and Morsy and Mckenna tinkering with too much sentiment.

Sadly we are just not good enough. Defensively we have been a nightmare all season which is no surprise as we were poor last season but were good enough to overcome it in the championship. We need to rethink our recruitment policy as only signing young British players will not make a team of enough quality to survive in the premier league. To survive you start at the back and build a team around not giving away too many soft goals.

Another 3 points binned. Not only is this squad not up to prem standard you have to look further to see where our problems lie imo.KM did brilliantly past two seasons but imo he has not been up to it in the prem either ,he has made some very poor decisions and seems to be tacticly a bit naive. At the start of season we seemed to on a high with the adrenaline of promotion and played well even when being beaten ,but that has worn off and KM does not seem to be getting the team fired up enough now.Post match statements are also getting boring and empty of real substance. We are down im afraid .We have to do it all again .

Km is tactically clueless and bringing morsy back into the starting 11 was suicidal....we are relegated...time to throw everything at the FA cup and bring some pride back..but unfortunately I think KM will treat the fa cup with contempt yet again.

Actually annoyed about this. Fulham beating Wolves oncTuesday was a gift and yet again we have failed to take advantage. No goal in this game was actually crafted. Ipswich goals were flukes and United goals from set plays given away cheaply. If we do go down, this game will be one we will rue - never a better time to play them and never a better chance with 45 minutes against ten men. We just didn't have the quality or knowledge how to break them down, looked pedestrian at times and opportunities to put the ball in the mixer not taken.

Some of these comments are just unbelievable, fans genuinely think that we should of beaten Man Utd down to 10 men, with Morsy in team its like having 10 men ourselves, playing 10 men is harder, we would be a point less if Villa had of beaten our ten men and they have talent in abundance but wait...aside Woolf coming on 2nd half who played , that's right NONE OF THE LEAGUE 1 HEROES!
The only time this season Mckenna started game with our new signings and loans and Woolf who has proved he is young enough to of stepped up. Still blaming Muric is ridiculous he saved us dropping more points than his mistakes that led to losses, Walton conceded 16 goals in 6 games! Morsy and Davis to blame for so many goals.
Mckenna has shown far to much sentiment, look at our bench and Utds last night, we bought on Hirst and Broadhead from league 1 and they bring on top, experienced internationals. Man Utd may be poor by their standard but in what world are we better than them at this time? They on double the points we are.

Mckenna bought Championshio stars to make us prolific as relegation was almost inevitable so next year you will be so glad we have Szmodicks, Phillogene, J Clarke etc
Need stop living in the past, we are rebuilding, we had a lucky season and went up but way to soon and thanks to Sarrimento and Hutch brilliant form 2nd half season, we now have Prem stadium, Prem training ground, young assets who are the best of Championship and have to realise 120 million in Prem is nothing but 120 million in Championship is huge, we will have an amazing team next year in Championship and only H Clarke and Woolf should stay and Cam Humphries given chance in new midfield, with the money from Delap sale we should sign Cajuste, get in Flynne Downes and 2 strikers to play with Szmodicks.
If we stay up all League 1 lot aside Woolf and Clarke will go, we need a season in Championship with new signings and a few more to have a season of winning games together.
Mckenna and Ashton know what they are doing Mckenna owes us another season at least. Stop blaming new signings and forget the past, trust me the moaners will be glad of those signings next season and see why they were signed.

Last night twas the last straw for me. If ever there was an opportunity to beat Man Utd , it was now . We..McKenna, failed, miserably IMHO.

I've officially now lost faith in this cliche of "Trust the process". What process? Repeating the same mistakes game after game ?

The post match comments of
"we will take the positives"
"we will learn from this "
"The opposition are a quality team"

All now are sounding quite hollow to me. Its like GroundHog day.

McKenna is either unable to adapt, and change tactically or is stubborn and inflexible in his approach. I edging towards the latter. simply because he, and the players say , "we will not change the way we play"...WHY NOT its clearly not working the way we play is it ?

McKenna is trying to keep Town up on the back of a very inexperienced front line, (average age 20yrs old ) Game after game we picks the same formation and and the same players. ALL our experience sits on the bench!! What is the use of bringing on these players, cold into a game with 10 mins to go? They wont even have warmed up by the time the final whistle goes.

Player choices by Mckenna :

Where is Broadhead, Szmodics, Hirst, Chaplin (yes hes injured but hes had no look in even when fit )? These players should be starting EVERY game and be our front line.
Yes the nation and everyone on the football world is waxing lyrical about Liam Delap. He has tremendous POTENTIAL,. He gets by on raw aggression, blistering pace, power and strength. But when he fades as he so often does after about 30 mins , what else has he in his locker atm ? Yes. hes scored the majority of goals for us this season, but that just 10...you cant blame other players for not scoring , when they spend all their time on the bench!

Hirst offers something different . He can hold the ball up , he plays other forwards into the game . Within 2 mins of being on last night he slipped a ball through to Broadhead in the box. It didnt come off, but this is the type of ball we need Delap to do ...Its not in his game atm . He likes to run at a defenders, head down, ( usually from the half way line). Opponents have sussed this now , and put 2-3 players on him ...he loses the ball. He doesnt look up to see who is around him to lay it off to. His soul mindset is to blast a shot on goal. Great, if it comes off. But how often did it last night?

Clarke . Why is he getting that shirt ahead of Broadhead? He's lightweight, has no end product , rarely crosses the ball into the box.

Phillogen : Why is he in the team on the right wing ahead of Hutch? Yes he score 2 goals against a very poor Utd defence , one was an absolute gift , so Im not even counting that tbh. What else did he offer for the rest of the game ? Or any game hes played in? His tracking back / defending out of possession is poor and ineffective.

But these are young inexperienced players, So I can forgive them their lack of experience atm. But McKenna KEEPS picking them ahead of more experienced players who can / do offer more stealth, and inventive attacking play that we are not seeing from the kids. This is down to the manager, not the players.

Szmodics: Where the hell is he in this team? The guy score over 30 goals ;last season. Mckenna tracked him for 2 seasons, and paid over the odds for him, so why isnt he playing him??

We have seen so many games this season , that frankly we should have won. But due to Mckenna's approach , and lack of adaptability we have lost these points. WE will get relegated ( as we all expected) but when yiu look back at this season , I really do wonder how we would have fared with a more experienced manager at the helm.

I wont be surprised to see Hirst , Szmodics, Chaplin and Broadhead asked to leave in the summer ....If you were them, would you hang around?

We have the payers at the club, fit and ready to play, but Mckenna is blinkered to that fact and chooses to keep picking these young players with vast, but as yet, unproven talent, to try and keep us up. He is expecting far too much iof them , and is ignioring some very good experienced players.

For the love of God man, ADAPT!

Leejames. Given that it was 10v11 and 2-2 at half time against a team that was 15th in the premier league and that had lost 5 out of the their last 6 home PL matches. Yes, we should be winning that match.

Ignore the badge on their chest, Man Utd this year are a poor side as their league position tells us. My issue is that our players just did not perform on the night to an expected level, and at times didn’t look like they were giving 100%. Ashton can tell everyone to get behind the players, which the majority of us will. But we need to be seeing more from them as a collective group than what we witnessed last night.

To be very clear -
Muric conceded 32 goals in 17 games, 16 of those goals and 3 of his errors were in 4 goal losses. 1.8 goals per game
Walton 16 goals in 6 games
2.6 goals per game
Palmer 8 goals in 3 games same trajectory as Walton 2.6 per game
5 penalties conceeded
Davis -2
Morsy -1
H.Clarke-1
Szmodicks -1

Look at defensive stats on Davis and Morsy alone 68 fouls and 13 yellow cards between them.

Blaming the wrong people for losses, just pick a player someone doesn't like and every game its their fault but never a Dad's Army player, it was Muric then Godfrey and now Phillogene when it clearly wasn't, saying both goals were flukes he still scored them and was in right place too.
Broadhead 1 goal 5 SOT
In 11 appearences
Hirst 1 goal 3 In 15 appearences
Phillogene 2 goals - 3 SOT in 3 games
Szmodicks 4 goals and 12 SOT in 19 games but Hirst and Broadhead were bought on way before
Hmm some super sub strikers, Szmodicks must be fuming.
This is Mckenna showing way to much sentiment, it does beg question would we get a manager bounce in final 11 games with a cup game before next Prem game, there is 2 very good young managers that fit the Ashton mould with Ipswich connections in Matt Bloomfield and Liam Manning I'm sure either of them would jump at chance to manage their club

To bring the best out of Delap, start with Hirst (he's more of a handful and underrated!) then bring on Delap for the last 30 mins.

Leejames99 added 10:44 - Feb 27
Hurst is over rated not under rated 1 goal and 3 shots on target in 15 appearences is not good stats for a striker, Szmodicks should always be ahead of Broadhead and Hirst he has 4 goals and 12 SOT

@supertabby it was 0-0 at halftime at Villa and we had 10 men and we are in bottom 3 it makes no odds and as I said with Morsy on pitch it's like having 10 anyway.
Man Utd defence was Harry Maguire an England International, title winning defender, Matteus De Ligt one of Germanys greatest ever and they both scored and I don't think we're too worried facing a young striker in Delap and certainly not 2 league 1 strikers in sicknote and Broadhead. Szmodicks should of been on imo

Man Utd maybe are having bad season for them but still way ahead of Ipswich Town

Spot on ArnieM...look,i'll forever be grateful for what McKenna has done but I get the feeling his heart hasn't been in it ever since the back end of last May when he was having his head turned by Brighton etc..I know a big part of my "love" for him died around that time - I don't like our club being treated as a "project".

Whatever happens I think the whole backroom set up needs re-looking at...what exactly has Mark Hudson brought this season?..there's far too much time spent on the touchline looking at computer tablets & player stats when the actual important stuff is happening on the pitch.

Leejames99 added 11:24 - Feb 27
So glad for Phillogene every single match report gives him our man of match or highest rating and everyone puts Morsy lowest and "out of his depth"! Like it or not Dad's Army are now part of the clubs history not future!
Philligene also had the same tackles and more blocks than Morsy & Davis and he is an attacker!

Leejames99 added 11:43 - Feb 27
Too highlight this 10 men should of won rubbish
We had 3 shots on target and 4 off last night, when Villa played us with 10 men they had 6 on target and 10 off, it means nothing and we had Captain Calamity and a firing blanks sub striker.

Man Utd have conceeded 39 goals only the same as Spurs and Brighton Newcastle, one more than City Ipswich have conceeded 57

So Man Utd are no pushover but are having a bad season by their standards but we are nowhere near their standard.

We held them at Portman Road thanks to Muric and inly coceeded because of who...yep Leif Davis not marking Rashford.

ArnieM - agree with your post but you haven't mentioned Burgess, arguably one of our best defenders when started other than the City game but all the backline were awful that game and now doesn't even make the matchday squad!...you get the feeling after forking out £15M for Greaves he won't bench him for a player signed from Accrington Stanley and Greaves is the future. Townsend needs to come in for Davis who has done very little in 2025.
