Hirst's First Scotland Call Confirmed
Sunday, 16th Mar 2025 19:13

Blues striker George Hirst has been added to the Scotland squad, FIFA having confirmed his switch from England earlier in the week.

Hirst, 26, was left out of Steve Clarke’s initial party as it was named prior to his change of allegiance being rubber-stamped.

The frontman, who won caps for England at U17, U18, U19 and U20 levels and whose father David won three full caps, joins Blues keeper Cieran Slicker in the squad.

Sheffield-born Hirst, who qualifies via his paternal grandfather, will link up with the squad on Monday.

Scotland play Greece in a two-legged Nations League play-off in Piraeus on Thursday 20th March and at Hampden Park the following Sunday.

Speaking on Friday about Hirst’s anticipated first call-up, manager Kieran McKenna said: “I know that’s been a goal for George over the last couple of years, when we signed him we spoke about it.

“He was proud of his Scottish heritage and was really keen to gain international honours with Scotland if possible.

“Like so many of the other boys, quite a few of the team now have come from League One and are now senior internationals.

“He’s worked really hard through the two divisions with us, has had a good impact this year and, hopefully, I think there’s strong interest there from George, strong interest from Scotland and it’s in the process.

“Hopefully that process can be completed and he can get that international recognition, which I think he really deserves.”

Good luck, watch out for those crunching tackles sicknote. Try not to get injured ans don't fall for it when they tell you to have to go get a long stand or fetch tartan paint and Haggis isn't an animal. Learn Flower of Scotland and enjoy

The bottom line is George Hirst thoroughly deserves it. He’s always conducted himself in a very professional manner, and proven if given the chance, he can score goals at the top level.

Well done George. In my opinion and I await to be shot down but he is our best complete striker and deserves more game time.

One of our best signings, back in the days when players were ten times cheaper than recent purchases! He will be hugely important for our title race next season.

Hirst is intelligent and has an array of skills, brings others into the game with well timed and executed passes. He would be my first choice no9 at Town.

He's better at holding the ball than Delap at the moment. Personally I'd like to see Hirst start games and Delap used as an impact player against more tired legs.

We can let Delap go for bonkers money knowing that this lad is our number one striker. He brings the team ethic Delap has yet to deliver imo.

Fully deserved. Good luck George.

Good for him. He deserved it snd it’s nice to see a nabager recognise his qualities frankly, and he should be first choice at Town for the rest of the season ( and should have been on so many games here this season). Delap is leaving , he hadn’t scored much since his purple patch early to mid first of the season. It beggars belief that Hirst has been stuck on the bench so much. But that’s McKenna for you!

well done george been unlucky with bad hamstring injury, that master tactician must see things other managers can't because he can't himself telling us the town team he would play.must be pep coming on twtd and all the league one players that need discarding, some are not going to stay but support them while they are here, and wish them well when they have left the club.

Well said Diesel Morris. Only a very sad individual with an inflated ego would try and turn a good news story into another opportunity to give another Town player a good kicking. Doubtless we will soon be given another insightful team selection with yet more vitriol poured on his ever growing list of Town players who he has consigned to the equivalent of the footballing history bin.

He deserves a start over Delap in my opinion.
When he brings his A game, he is brilliant.
Delap hasn't been that good the past few games.
Or even play him up top with Delap....... You never know.....

Ahh @doublepivot
Thanks for comment aimed at me obviously.
Why does me not rating George Hirst for the Premier League make me sad and have an ego exactly.
Don't see any Premier clubs linked with him and 15 goals and 10 assists over THREE seasons is hardly prolific is it and at 26 you would think as a number 9 he would have had clubs in for him.
Davis has been diabolical, 3 goals were his fault on Sat.
Morsy not good for Prem no.

It's no different to the glory fans giving the likes of Muric (same amount of mistakes as Sanchez who still plays in goal for Chelsea) and he is still 13th in most saves this season and only played half season, Omari Hutchinson who with Sarimmento pretty much single handedly got us promoted with his talent.
Phillogene who has scored 20 goals in 3 seasons and he is a winger
Jack Clarke 25 goals and 25 assets have all had a kicking from the league 1 player fans saying bad signings, boohoo Burns is better, Walton is better, no they are not, they were good in League 1, ok in Championship but that's where their level stops and that's fact, yes they will go down in history but that's what it is history and the club has a future.
The list goes on, booing players who have been bought to the club and saying Hirst is better than Delap because he waves at you.

Before giving me abuse check your facts and double pivot back to league 1 to see Morsy etc as Colchester are doing well.
Opinions fine, marked down fine but abuse because you don't agree not okay.
I guess you want to see
Walton
H Clarke
Woolfenden
Burgess
Davis
Morsy C
J Taylor
Broadhead
Burns
Hirst

Some Premier league team that! Ridiculous

Leejames99 you have nothing to base your comments on. Hirst's goals to minutes in the Prem should be enough to prove his ability/worth. It is also a fair argument to suggest we might have played better as a TEAM this season with Hirst in it, albeit Delap is a wonderful individual player and that option was removed due to injury. Suspect that we will become a team again next season, Hirst will play a pivotal role, and we will be better than this year in whichever League we are in accordingly.

PS Leejames99....I would take Harness over Clarke as an option for Broady. Harness is one of those super-athletic, intelligent players that seems to raise his standards to those around him. Hardly put a foot wrong in the minutes he did have at start of the season, but let's not let reality get in the way of a good rant !
