Cunha to Miss Wolves' Portman Road Visit Friday, 21st Mar 2025 14:33 Wolves top scorer Matheus Cunha will miss his side’s visit to Portman Road on Saturday 5th April after an FA Independent Regulatory Commission banned him for one match in addition to his current three-game suspension for his red card against AFC Bournemouth in the FA Cup.
Cunha, 25, was dismissed by referee Sam Barrott in the closing moments of extra-time of the tie, which the Cherries won on penalties following a 1-1 draw, for punching, kicking and headbutting opposition defender Milos Kerkez.
The Brazilian international, who had scored his side’s goal, subsequently appeared to refuse to leave the touchline while arguing with staff who were pointing him towards the dressing room and the FA charged him with acting in an improper manner in relation to his reluctance to leave the pitch.
A red card for violent conduct triggers an automatic three-match suspension, which he is currently serving, and now the Independent Regulatory Commission has added an additional match, as well as issuing him with a £50,000 fine, which will see him miss the visit to Portman Road.
Wolves are currently 17th in the Premier League table with the Blues one place behind needing to make up nine points - and also a significant goal difference - in the remaining nine games in order to avoid relegation.
Following Town’s 2-1 win at Molineux in December, Cunha elbowed and aggressively removed a member of the Blues’ security staff’s glasses.
The clash was missed by referee Simon Hooper but the striker later accepted an FA charge and was suspended for two matches and fined £80,000.

Ahhh, if only we were within touching distance. Just 1 point from both Southampton games and the Leicester game, and no points from any of Palace, West Ham, Everton, etc. has really killed us. What a frustrating season!

We're highly unlikely to stay up of course, but at least we have a tiny sniff of a chance if we can beat Wolves at Portman Road. The term "must win game" gets bandied around too much for me, but if any game where a mathematical certainly doesn't hang in the balance deserves the title, this one does. I'm already looking forward to next season regardless, but there would be an element of poetic justice if Cunha's 2nd ban ultimately sent Wolves down, after the debacle that was his successful appeal and subsequent goal-scoring points-winning performances in the wake of the last ban.

Still sounds like he got off lightly though. If this would have been out on the street, he would be inside for at least 6 months to a year (if not longer). Still feel like the club should have gotten punished too as this wasn't his first incident this season and there have been a few other Wolves players that have been out of line this season

Also how did he get a lesser fine this time round???

It would appear that the FA are far more interested in collecting massive fines for thier coffers than they are in giving a punishment that fits the crime. Could be a very fiery game against Wolves. Whilst we are unlikely to survive the drop, we still need to finish above the bottom two not just for pride but in case Man City do get a massive points deduction. Rather do it on merit but hey ho.

They seem to have done okay without him but have had a bit of luck vs Bournemouth with red card and got the Southampton win as we should have. Much rather face a Wolves team without him though for sure. Maybe we can get something at Bournemouth but as others have said Wolves is absolutely a must win game for us and them, cup final by all accounts for momentum, to keep us in it etc. This won't be popular but I really think if fit Muric should go back in goal, he was mense last night and maybe the time out has helped him, what a story if he came in and saved our season. I'm happy with Palmer but Muric is just the better shot stopper, we drew and won games with him in goal. Another I think should be given a chance is Ben Godfrey if Tunazabe not fit, he is a natural right back with a ton of Prem experience, and shouldn't be judged for 45 mins vs Spurs for being taken on by Son, 2 of the goals were Davis fault being out of position team for me Muric Godfrey O'Shea C Burgess Townsend Phillips Cajuste Broadhead J Clarke/Phillogene Hutchinson Delap Think Enciso and Phillogene, Hirst might be great impact subs but any lead we have to just be boring and shut shop.

Sammon of knowledge, For me it was Purley the Southampton game, won that we'd be flying all confidence went since that defeat, we were hanging before it it was supposed to be a springboard, if we'd beaten them we'd have got something out of a poor spurs and man u sides,

He has had 2 straight reds, assaulted a member of our staff, literally kicked off after the fact (twice) and the only sanction is 1 additional game and a fine that he will hardly notice. Just reconfirms how naive we were thinking you could come into this League, play it straight and get treated fairly. If we stay up and/or come back up soon, then it begs the question of how we need to re-think our philosophy....Woolfy seems to be the only one that has grasped this! Is adopting the dark arts a price worth paying? Am not so sure, but suspect many fans will think it is.

Good news, makes Bournemouth game really important. Get a win there and v wolves and its back on. Sadly nothing other than 6 points from next two will do. If we do and wolves don't pick up any points I would suggest momentum is in our favour, it's clear to see wolves seem to collapse when pressure is on. Some of the comments on here about assault and police is a joke. If someone did that in public he would they be given 6months bird he'd be laughed at. He's not connected properly and players react to it 5 seconds late as realise they can get him sent off.

I think the FA missed a trick is time around. On top of his ban and fine following our game, he should have been given a suspended punishment. Eg: A 2 match ban and fine to be automatically added to any ban incurred for future indiscretions. I think a 5 match ban his time would have been fair. It's almost a shame though that he's not playing against us. Imagine the reception he would have received at PR.

It should have been longer. Disgusting behaviour twice in a matter of months. He should also have been told to agree to anger management therapy too.

If it's correct that Godfrey has gone back to Atalanta im not surprised i said after the Tottenham game he should never play for Town again he was completely disinterested once a budgie always a budgie. My cousins who live up in the Wirral and support Everton warned me about his lack of commitment.

@linkboy13 Godfrey played 45 mins vs Tottenham, the first goal Delap out of position, Delap lost it and Gray punted it up and Son took on 2 that's football and who scored Johnson who was marking him...guess same with 2nd. How is Godfrey not committed, he is on loan and played over 100 games in the Prem and twice in Champions League this season, hardly makes him a bad player. This is problem this season some fans have just turned on every new player, including Hutchinson and Delap, we will become known for that before long and nobody will want to play for Town. We are meant to be a family club, people just want league 1 lads playing in Prem, if Muric had stayed in we might not be where we are, the same with playing recognised right backs and a LB defender who defends. My cousins in the Willral isn't it funny that whoever we signed who isnt liked someone on here knows someone who supports that team and doesn't rate them when they come to Town.
