Burgess Joins Swansea
Saturday, 14th Jun 2025 15:15

Out-of-contract Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess has joined fellow Championship side Swansea City on a three-year deal.

Burgess, 29, had been offered terms by Town with talks having been ongoing for some months but without an agreement being reached.

The Australian international, whose side secured a place in the 2026 World Cup finals by beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah on Tuesday, had been linked with La Liga clubs Girona and Valencia, as well as Rangers in his native Scotland.

The one-time Fulham trainee spend 2024/25 vying with Jacob Greaves for the left-sided central defensive role and may have felt his changes of making the Socceroos squad for the finals might be hampered if he wasn’t playing regularly for Town during the season ahead.

“We are delighted that Cameron will be joining us at Swansea City, head coach Alan Sheehan told the Swans website.

“He is an experienced and consistent performer that has seen him rise up through the divisions in the last few years and become a full international.

“During our conversations Cameron really bought in to what we are trying to do at Swansea and I believe he will be a great addition for us on and off the pitch driving standards throughout the club, and we look forward to getting to work with him.”

Director of football Richard Montague added: “We are very pleased to have been able to add a player of Cameron’s pedigree and experience to our squad ahead of the new season.

“To bring in a player who has recently played Premier League football and been part of a successful period at his previous club is very positive.

“There was considerable interest in Cameron from a number of clubs, and we are delighted he felt that Swansea City was the right choice for him.”

Global head of analytics and recruitment Adam Worth said: “Moving into this summer we were aware of the need to try and ensure we complement the youthful element of our squad with players who are proven performers at this level.

“Cameron undoubtedly meets that criteria, and arrives with us fresh from playing in the Premier League with Ipswich.

“We are excited to see what he can bring to Swansea City in the coming season and the years ahead.”

Burgess joined the Blues for £750,000 from Accrington Stanley in August 2021 and went on to make 116 starts and 11 sub appearances, scoring five goals.

A member of the back-to-back promotion-winning sides, it was his goal at Coventry which all but secured a place in the Premier League ahead of the final weekend of that campaign.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Darren O'Dea has joined the Swans as assistant head coach, while another one-time Town loan defender Richard Stearman is set to continue as first-team coach.

We thank him for his time and we move on. I suspect Axel will do the same. No point in lamenting this. We just have to make sure we replace with better players but with the same attitude.

So I guess he has no further aspirations to play in the premiere league then.

And do one Widj123. Your banter is stale.

He's the best centre half we have had for a very long time. It is disgraceful that he wasn't in the team more last season.

Blimey,great signing for the Swans.

Hope Greaves "mans-up" a bit next season, spends far too much time on his 4rse moaning at the ref.

The amount of people here who expected us to tear up the Prem is mind-blowing. Yo-yoing a couple of seasons was inevitable, but will put in a better place to make a stronger run next time.

Cakeman!? Do we ? I don't think so , we have a huge squad.
Widj123 - another one jumping ship ? Only Delap has gone and not cos he wanted out but because he's moved up in his career .

I don’t understand the move to Swansea, I can’t understand how we haven’t made him our number one centre half. I guess he was really made to feel unwanted after we brought Greaves in with a lack of game time. I think it’s really going to upset our rhythm as a playing unit as I can see more eyebrows being raised with more players leaving. Maybe he knows what’s going on at the club with the manager situation. Hope I’m wrong.

What the heck!!! Swansea...really?! What on earth are they offering him that we couldn't?
Oh well, probably will mean that Baggott wont be going anywhere this coming season.

Mmm. Very likely needs more minutes ahead of fhe World Cup. Thought we were a better side with him in it rather than not, so this for me is a loss. Gotta trust the process though, onwards and upwards. Good luck Cam

A very good signing for Swansea, the majority of the sucessful double promotion team were Paul Cooks signings, we will start to see how good Keiran McKennas players are, have a feeling that a few more will go

I am really surprised and saddened by this - a good dependable guy.He has not been treated very well at Ipswich. Presumably no fee so what will it cost to find someone as good. Our wheeling and dealing is looking a bit shaky.Anyway thanks for your efforts Cameron when of course given the opportunity and all the best for the future.

And it feels like a number of people genuinely want the club to fail so they can proudly shout "I told you so".

Well that's a bit of a shocker, but best of luck anyway Cam.
Just Axel's contract to sort now, let's hope he doesn't also follow Burgess out the door.
(At least Cam didn't do a Judas and go to the budgies ,who are also after a centre back)

All those saying this, was a bad decision, please remember it was his decision, not the clubs. He's was offered a 1 year deal with the option of another, which first in with what we offer for players around their 30s. So can totally get that he would take an offer of 3 years.
Something this does show, is fans shouldn't believe all the rumours that go around. All this talk of girona, valencia, rangers clearly all rubbish. Pretty sure he wouldnt be choosing Swansea if any of those clubs were interested in him.

First off, thank you big man, you proved me and many others wrong and you deserved more premier league game time. BUT Swansea? I don't get it, he surely could get a much better club than that. This is very poor from Town bur I guess at his age he wants to play week in week out as he's likely only got a couple of tournaments for Scotland in him.

Am I surprised he has gone - no, but to Swansea, Wrexham I could understand.

What a superb player he has been for us. Integral in our double promotion. I hope this doesn't bite us on the arse. Not many of the COOK wonder buys left now. Something tells me more of them could go too.

I never felt Cam was truly part of the “project”. Bit like Hladky and Muric. Maybe I just didn’t see enough of him but I felt he was more distant than most and clearly his #1 priority was Australia. When he went off for 6 weeks for the Asian Cup in Jan 24, he left as we were rather struggling in mid table and had yet to start that amazing run that took us to the PL. But he went to Asia anyway. Luckily we then went on that amazing run and Cam returned to strengthen us. But ever since then I felt his priority was not with Town in same way as (say) Mass. I can’t say I blame him for wanting to play for Oz and get to a World Cup finals but ….. anyway he did great for us and I wish him well. Luke and Elkan must both be a bit happier ?
