Burgess Joins Swansea Saturday, 14th Jun 2025 15:15 Out-of-contract Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess has joined fellow Championship side Swansea City on a three-year deal.
Burgess, 29, had been offered terms by Town with talks having been ongoing for some months but without an agreement being reached.
The Australian international, whose side secured a place in the 2026 World Cup finals by beating Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah on Tuesday, had been linked with La Liga clubs Girona and Valencia, as well as Rangers in his native Scotland.
The one-time Fulham trainee spend 2024/25 vying with Jacob Greaves for the left-sided central defensive role and may have felt his changes of making the Socceroos squad for the finals might be hampered if he wasn’t playing regularly for Town during the season ahead.
“We are delighted that Cameron will be joining us at Swansea City, head coach Alan Sheehan told the Swans website.
“He is an experienced and consistent performer that has seen him rise up through the divisions in the last few years and become a full international.
“During our conversations Cameron really bought in to what we are trying to do at Swansea and I believe he will be a great addition for us on and off the pitch driving standards throughout the club, and we look forward to getting to work with him.”
Director of football Richard Montague added: “We are very pleased to have been able to add a player of Cameron’s pedigree and experience to our squad ahead of the new season.
“To bring in a player who has recently played Premier League football and been part of a successful period at his previous club is very positive.
“There was considerable interest in Cameron from a number of clubs, and we are delighted he felt that Swansea City was the right choice for him.”
Global head of analytics and recruitment Adam Worth said: “Moving into this summer we were aware of the need to try and ensure we complement the youthful element of our squad with players who are proven performers at this level.
“Cameron undoubtedly meets that criteria, and arrives with us fresh from playing in the Premier League with Ipswich.
“We are excited to see what he can bring to Swansea City in the coming season and the years ahead.”
Burgess joined the Blues for £750,000 from Accrington Stanley in August 2021 and went on to make 116 starts and 11 sub appearances, scoring five goals.
A member of the back-to-back promotion-winning sides, it was his goal at Coventry which all but secured a place in the Premier League ahead of the final weekend of that campaign.
Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Darren O'Dea has joined the Swans as assistant head coach, while another one-time Town loan defender Richard Stearman is set to continue as first-team coach.

Crikey!...didn't foresee him going to a fellow Championship side (certainly not Swansea)...a bit disappointed to be honest maybe in part due to the club not giving him a decent enough contract to stay here and more likely as a few others have mentioned getting regular first team starts which a bit unfairly he didn't get last season. All the best Cam.

We are now down to just four from the 19 additions of Paul Cook's "Demolition Man" summer of 2021: Burns; Chaplin; Walton and Morsey.

Sorry to see him go but fully understand his decision. Grieves will be first choice here because of his big transfer fee but Burgess is too good to be a sub in the Championship. No doubt he will score at least one set piece goal against us.

Very good player. Treated poorly. He’ll be outstanding. Deserves all the success he gets. One of the consequences of spending so much, and not getting value…, there’ll be further consequences to come: Some bizarre ‘squad building’ this last 12 months; nobody to play in the key CDM’s roles except one 34 year old .., but we have 9 inside foreards all of similar quality.

The acid test will be to see how Greaves shapes up in the coming season as the left sided CB...... I'm not convinced on last seasons shining, thst he is actually better than Burgess. Just because you pay another club the fee they demand for thru player, and it's a high fee, foes not nean that player is automatically "better". But you only have to look at hiw McKenna persisted with all his £20m new recruits ahead of arguably better ( more experienced!!) Players. Eg Philogrne, or Clarke in place of Broadhead, or Szmodics.... Delap in place of Hirst ( the latter gas a dar better all round gane and goals per game ratio was actually better than Delap!).... Muric in place of Hldaky or Walton... was an absolute bloody car crash.

Might be interesting to keep an eye on Swansea. Luca Modric onboard as investor and co-owner. Sounds like they might have some ambitious plans, no doubt we shall see how it all plays out at close quarters next season. As for CB, I wish him the best of luck, like all footballers, he has to do what he thinks is best for himself, the rest of his career and his family. We should know in about 11 months time whether we've made an error of judgement or not, as will he! From my perspective at least, it should give another player who wasn't given the playing time he deserved last season in LW. Interesting few weeks ahead everyone!

I can see all angles to this, he wanted a longer contract and we werent offering him a longer one! lets face it he is 30 next birthday and should we get back up he wont be first choice, he wants regular starting place and 3 year contract and he wasnt getting that offered here. So understandable on all fronts. Towns most consistently improved player over his time here! Good luck Cam except when you play us!

Shocked at this move, but 3 year contract must be the key. McK and Ashton need to get a squad together that will click again, can see many more faces coming in. Cannot see us making top 2 more likely play offs unless we can get the right players through the door. Going to be a long 2 months

I’m guessing for him this is a good move.he’s got to prioritise playing regularly in a World Cup year. As we speak he is probably better than greaves as an all round defender.however greaves has the ability to be better

Can't understand what all the fuss is about. Would have been great this year but would not have been part of prem plans hence we only offered a one year deal. We are not going to offer silly contracts to players who we will need to replace if we go up at end of this season. Saying that he has been a very good player for us. Better than Greaves and a better understanding with leif. We shipped so many goals over the past couple of seasons it would make sense we are looking to in the near future to replace defenders.

I did hear from one of the players dads that there are lots of unhappy players at the club...so could be more to follow.

Robsonwark: and my money is on these unhappy players being the ones thst were replaced by the £20m new boys. McKenna got it wrong and I dont care how many fiwbbotes people ascribe to this view. We needed experience in the team last season. We got 29yr old £20m lightweights by and large, whilst the experience sat on the bench. My biggest fear is we lose Hirst if s newly promoted PL cones calling i can see him leaving too and who could blame him with 10 mins sub cameos for fading Delap every 2nd half! Chaplin and Broadhead rarely got a look in while we faffed around with the likes of Philogene/ Clarke who could barely pass the ball to a blue shirt. Sorry, but I wasn't i.pressed with how with treated a lot of our senior players last season. It remains to be seen how many stay. I hope they all do.
BlueRuin69 added 21:36 - Jun 14
No question band of brothers were replaced by a plethora of £20 players who were no way better than what we had. McKenna messed up last season and who knows the damage caused. Shame. Burgess clearly better performer than Greaves last year.

As i said yesterday would be amazed if Burgess went to a top La Liga side seemed very far fetched just agents talk. Also predicted he would end up at another championship side which is about his level. Too many people on here throwing their toys out of the pram because one of their favourites has departed and predicting doom and gloom way before the new season has started.

Where is all this “he’s been treated unfairly” stuff coming from? I haven’t seen anything to suggest that he or anyone else has suffered in that respect. KMcK has always stated that it’s a squad approach he takes and that, in my opinion, has been the case. And as for some of the other comments on here…..

Blueboy talking out of his sphincter yet again, he probablyhave Mccarthyback in a flash. . I can see a lot more moving on because to get prem quality players you need to be spending way more than we could. Perhaps a season of complete rebuilding. So many players are Championship quality & just not good enough for the Prem, I'd include Hurst,Broadhead, Clarke both of them even Davis who for me was a real disappointment. A year ago we were talking 30M. now maybe 3? Greaves? Chappers? Burns? Perhaps Chio will come good & Philogene but apart from Omari I don't really see anything but championship players. I expect Walton to go also. Really think we should be looking to Holland, France & Spain for the sort of quality needed. I am very surprised Burgess has gone to Swansea, they must have offered a very good contract because I look at them as a team that just makes up the championship, never going to do much. However, gooluck to him. Then there's the whole thing with KM, would he go to Brentford? They've certainly got some awesome players. Think there's going to be a lot going on in the the next few weeks.

Usual moaners and know-it-all armchair managers on here I see. I'm disappointed to see Cam go, even more so that it's to a rival club, but none of us know the full story, if he wants to be first choice, play loads of games and get a 3 year deal that's his decision, he developed massively thanks to Keiran and our training staff whilst here, I don't think many people thought he was going to be an established championship player a couple of years ago, let alone a decent premier league defender. Good luck to him and thanks for a massive contribution to two promotions.
