Butcher: I'd Have Made Omari Train on His Own
Thursday, 14th Aug 2025 20:40

Blues legend Terry Butcher says he would have told wantaway winger Omari Hutchinson to train on his own for the remainder of his contract after the former Chelsea man pulled out of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie at Bromley due to his ongoing transfer situation.

Hutchinson, who is edging closer to a move to Nottingham Forest, who are reported to be near to agreeing a £37.5 million fee for the 21-year-old, trained on Monday but, having made his desire to return to the Premier League clear, “didn’t feel that he could contribute with the situation as it is,” according to manager Kieran McKenna.

Asked what he would have done with a player in Hutchinson’s situation in this week’s Life’s a Pitch TV with the situation having progressed significantly since it was recorded last night, Butcher said: “If I was the manager I would say, ‘You train on your own, you’ve got four years of your contract left, so all the very best. Enjoy it, we’ll meet in four years’ time’.

“I think he’s a good player. The one thing that strikes me is he played in the Premier League for a year last year and wasn’t very good. Hardly contributed.

“I know clubs have put bids in because of the potential, I fully understand that, he had a very good Euros, scored in the final, but it’s a lot different to the Premier League. If he thinks he’s worth it, then we’ll see what happens.

“If he doesn’t get sold, he’s going to face the possibility of then having to grovel or having to say sorry because the fans will want him to say sorry because no one turns down the chance to play for Ipswich Town Football Club.

“There’s a crisis coming up if he doesn’t go that he’s got to meet head on. That’s why the ball’s really very much in Town’s court, although we are losing a very good player. We saw what happened in the Championship, he was excellent, he was really, really good.

“He’s a really good Championship player but a poor Premier League player, at the moment. It’s up to you Omari at the end of the day. I wouldn’t be bothered about it. In the end, you don’t want him around the dressing room.”

This week’s guest Tommy Smith, who recently joined National League Braintree having returned from a spell playing for Auckland FC in New Zealand, agreed that it would be a long way back for Hutchinson if his Premier League move doesn’t happen.

“You only want the players around you that are willing to give everything for the shirt and if he’s not willing to do that, that obviously puts the team in a very difficult position from a culture point of view. You need everyone pulling in the same direction,” he said.

“The only real way back from that now is to apologise and it probably takes a little bit more than apologising, he has to come in and then make a massive contribution.

“He’s made a rod for his own back a little bit. But it’s tricky one because he’s a very good player, he has been a good player, but he does need to understand that he does need to buy into the team ethos and if he’s not going to do that, you just move him to one side.”

Butcher’s fellow legend-in-residence Russell Osman, after initially joking that he wasn’t in the right frame of mind to contribute, recalled being concerned by something Hutchinson said when receiving a Man of the Match award early on in his loan spell with the Blues in 2023/24.

“Everybody’s waiting to see what he’s going to say in this little interview and the question was, ‘Do you think you’ll be with us next season?’. And his response was, ‘Well, my agent will see what the best move is for me’. That was 18 months ago and that set alarm bells ringing in my head.”

Shame some of the vitriol on here. In his position, many of us would do the same. He’s a young man with a big career ahead of him and he sees a better opportunity at another club.
We’ve benefited from him likewise he’s benefited from us and working with KMc.

In principle I agree with Butch, if there was any chance he was staying at the club. And I'm sure deals are never done till they're done.
But we don't know where things were with his transfer and what had been said to him - maybe it was really very clear that he was on his way, and here we are a few days later with the BBC confirming his move to Forest.
He has been fantastic for Ipswich, and a key part of our promotion winning side, and helped to give us half a chance last season. Not to mention a large profit.
He's a young guy, dependent on agents and those around him. Give him a break.

Times have changed Terry - c’mon. The owners would tell you to do everything you could to keep him happy until he gets sold for a decent profit. I think he’s got the potential to be able to play in the Prem but he’ll need a very solid team behind him. We couldn’t provide that for him last year and it showed.

I said te same thing on this platform a few days ago. But that more short term until he's sold. I wouldn't let him anywhere near the group. I can't understand young players or their agents holding this club to ransom. Delap and Hutchinson having release clauses in their contracts. OH refusing to play Tyreece Simpson holding the club to ransom. While Delap caused us financial pain, Hutchinson did us a favour. There is no way on this planet Hutchinson is worth £37.5m. If there hadn't been a £35m release clause, we'd be lucky to get £25m. It'll be a massive relief when it's all sorted. I believe he will be an amazing player, but he's nowhere near that now.

Blue boy you never cease to amaze us on here. One minute you’re creaming over Omari and sticking up for him the next you’re agreeing with Butcher JUST so you can have a go at McKenna. Booooring!

On this i don't blame Omari too much. He's a young and ambitious kid wanting the best for his career and perhaps a little naive. Russell O gets it right at the end, the quote from Omari about his agent making the best decision for him. Ultimately that's the problem, it's the agents turning Omari's head and telling him what he could be getting elsewhere, rather than what his level is at now and what he is good enough for right now. Although, obviously, Omari could have handled it better.

We've seen this so many times over the years, with young, promising players getting the attention of bigger, PL clubs and grabbing a dream move before they are necessarily ready, and then things don't pan out and their career suffers. Connor Wickham is a prime example. It's not always the players fault, often it's the people advising them.

But, FWIW, I agree with Butch, he should be made to train away from the squad, if only to hammer home the implications of what he's done and to teach him, and those around him, an important lesson

What I would have done if I was OH, would have been to say to KM, "Boss it's up to you if you want me to play, if you do, you'll get 100% from me. If it's more about protecting a club " asset " then I'll go along with what's suggested " Truth is, non of us in here know the complete story, and I suspect a certain agent and outside influencers have had more than a little to say in his ear. Let's just hope for an amicable solution and all parties can move on.

He’s tasted the highest possible success with England U21’s, mixing with the cream of young talent this country can provide and you can’t ignore the possibility that those around him have had a go asking what his England future going to be staying with a Championship side.
Undoubtedly a talent but didn’t set off any fireworks in the Premiership and doubt he’s worth the figure mentioned and I thought we paid too much for him but that’s the money orientated sport that football is today.
He’s treated the club badly and left a bitter taste, not a way to leave a club that gave you your big break in our eyes.
Honestly thought he never really a good fit with his teammates from some of his body language, that he always seemed to be a bit aloof in my view.
But I wish the lad success in his future.

If Cloughie was still forest manager he wouldn’t sign him now. And if he was Ipswich manager he’d have kids goalposts and nets delivered to Omari’s house with a note saying..
“ere’ you go (cloughie drawl) s***house..get soom’ practice in, and we’ll see you in 4 fook*** years”

Seems like a shambles inside Portman Road. Lost very good Championship players. Can't get my head around letting Morsy go, a big influence at the club. I think Hutchinson would have gladly played Tuesday if he was still here. Just my opinion.

The reason he was poor in the premier league was because he was played as a number 10 for ages and it did not suit him. On the right wing he was great.

I agree with Butch. Omari should've been fined and made to train on his own until he is sold or apologises and commits himself to the club. I'm sure Butch wasn't serious about really making Omari train on his own for the duration of his contract, but rather letting him know that he could.

The issue is he is paid to play, not to train on his own.

Hutchinson's biggest mistake is not playing - I think he owes McKenna/ Ipswich for the chance we have given him -

Completely agree with Butch and Oz on this one. Especially the part about a teammate pinning him against a wall and having a word. Someone like O’Shea should take him to one side and teach him what respect is.

Surely contracts should be written so he has to pay the club back his wages for every week he avoids work plus 25% when he refuses to play..plus he may be liable for damages if the club doesnt succeed this year, say a payout of 100m or so for the losses the club would face because he broke his contract...
