EFL Statement on Abandonment Sunday, 21st Sep 2025 10:38 The EFL has issued a statement relating to yesterday’s abandoned Championship game between the Blackburn Rovers and the Blues at Ewood Park.
The match was curtailed in the 80th minute as the torrential rain which had persisted throughout the game had made the surface unplayable.
At the time, Rovers were 1-0 in front via a Todd Cantwell penalty, while Town were down to 10 men following Jacob Greaves’s red card, an incident in which the conditions played a significant role.
“[Saturday]’s Sky Bet Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town was abandoned due to an unplayable surface,” the statement reads. “The decision was taken in agreement with both managers.
“The board will consider what action is to be taken as a result of the abandonment, in line with EFL regulations.”
EFL regulation 34.2, indicates that any league match which from any cause falls short of 90 minutes’ duration may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full or in part on whatever terms and conditions the board shall in their absolute discretion determine.
However, as manager Kieran McKenna indicated he is anticipating with his post-match comments last night, the most likely option appears to be the game being restaged at a later date as FA rule 20(E)(iii) states: “In the event of a competition match not being played or abandoned owing to causes over which neither club has control, it should be played in its entirety on a date to be mutually agreed by the two clubs and approved by the competition.”
Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed that Jacob Greaves’s red card will stand whatever the EFL’s decision on the match overall. Greaves will be banned for one match for his first-ever senior dismissal, next week’s home match against Portsmouth.

Darkhorse you clearly have not played football! Pitch and conditions can be and are a leveller. years ago remember playing in a football tournament, some very good teams which contained players who were semi pro or retired pros, shyte pitch and conditions and we walked away with the trophy, when in all honesty we shouldn't have. I mentioned in an earlier post that where we sit at xmas will for me decide whether this last window was a success! Been out with some Scum mates this morning, very pleasant it was as well, they are fuming at their team. Not sure of the pleasure of bashing the club at every single opportunity! Keep the faith FFS!

Blueoutlook, Burgess wanted a 3 year deal not 2, thats what he got at Swansea. Hes almost 30 now, wasnt first choice, and frankly the club aren't going to offer him a 3 year deal. I would also like to have kept him, but when an older player gets offered a long long deal elsewhere, hes gonna take it.

Blues1: no sign of that championship player of the year since hes signed for us is there £15m Ashton paid for him . He's nothing like a £15m player. Burgess nay well have been made " offers" by Town, but he wasn't offered the 2 year deal he wanted. Spending lots of money is Ashtons model. It doesnt mean " quality" and if it does, then something's not right at this club regards these players we've brought in for top dollar who have so far failed to show their previous club's form. Eg: 1)Szmodics 34 goals for Blackburn 2)Philogene ripping it up for Hull 3)Greaves. " player of the season" at Hull At Town mistake in mistake games this season and last 4)MacAteer... better than Ogbene?? 5)Clarke: skinning players for fun at Sunderland. At Town looks very, very lightweight and ineffective. How much has those 5 players cost the club, and are we seeing a better team because of it?

Darkhorse, when a post receives over 50 negative votes its probably an idea to consider that maybe you're talking a load of shit.

Is Darkhorse using artificial intelligence to write his posts ? If so he probably put the words Norwich and Sheffield into his device to arrive at the convoluted and at times bizarre post.

I'd have no problems wit the EFL awarding the three points to Blackburn, on the balance of all probabilities. Ten minutes left, one goal up, one player up, a Blakburn win is far more likely than any other result. Any other descision by the EFL, will mean we've already played the biggest " get out of jail " card we're likely to get this season!

Darkhorse sounds like he needs sending to the knackers yard to be made into glue. Much more useful to all then.

Bazza: Young say Town wouldn't offer Burgess a 3 yr deal. He's what, 29yrs? Yet the club dont hesitate to offer a 40 yr old a deal? How much has Young played for us to date? How much has Burgess played for Swansea?

It seems some on here would rather watch our team hoof the ball up field and chase it rather than play football. Personally I'm happy to wait for this new squad to start to get familiar with each other and click as a skilful passing team. The squad that gained two promotions took time to really get going so let's just be patient. Being 1-0 down in heavy rain on a waterlogged pitch has no bearing what this team is trying to achieve. As for the referee on Saturday, what the hell did he think would happen with heavy rain forecast to continue for the rest of the day? The game should never has started when such poor drainage was evident and the rain kept on coming down.

re darkhorse - the best would be to for no-one to mark him down or even perhaps up. He thrives on winding people up so that would hurt his pride and ego. .

Only 3 downvotes for my post above? I'll never catch up with darkhorse28, 98 downvotes for one post as it now stands! Seriously, I stand by what I've posted, though I'd have no problem with a complete match replay, but I'm not a Blackburn supporter or an official of that club! I remember the days back in the 70's and 80's when the Blackburn pitch would have been considered a carpet in comparison! Of course football should be a game of skill played on a properly maintained pitch that allows those skills to flourish, but there always has to be an element of sheer will to win, under any conditions.

Apologies Gazelle, it was meant for Darkhorse. At least an animal was in the name. Is Darkhorse really Bluebore81 in disguise? Looked at previous comments by Darkhorse, really is not a Town fan, every comment is negative. Must be a budgie
