McKenna: A Poor Performance, Well Below the Level
Tuesday, 2nd Dec 2025 23:09

Boss Kieran McKenna admitted his side’s performance was poor and nowhere near the level required as the Blues snatched a late point at Blackburn Rovers, courtesy of Sindre Walle Egeli’s first goal for the club.

Town seemed destined to fall to a second defeat on the road in five days, having been defeated 2-1 at Oxford on Friday, until the Norwegian shot low past Rovers keeper Aynsley Pears in the 94th minute to secure a 1-1 draw.

“We snatched a point at the end,” McKenna said. “I think it was a poor performance from us on most aspects.

“I know where we’re at as a group, but that was well below the level that we’ve been at tonight, so we need to be really, really honest and frank about that.

“We’ve just spoken about that downstairs in a really honest way and where that performance tonight has come from, in my opinion.

“We take the moment at the end, good composure from a few of the players to set it up, really good finish from Sindre.

“I think there are lots of games this year from which we’ve deserved more than we’ve got. Tonight’s one in the other category, so you have to take them as they come.

“You want it to be a moment in the season we can look back on fondly, but we have and we will address the performance tonight because that level isn’t going to get us the season that we want.

“We’re not going to hide from that. We’re going to take the moment, we’re not going to hide from the other bit and we know we need to be a lot better.”

Asked where he felt the under-par display came from, he added: “I think there are few different bits. I spoke to the group downstairs. I think it comes a little bit from Friday night, the setback of a loss affects us more than I would want it to at the moment.

“I think Friday night was incomparable to tonight as a performance, a game that normally we would win but some moments went against us, and I think it knocked us more than I would want it to. And not just today, I saw it at the training ground yesterday as well.

“We need to be much stronger on that. There are some other things, but those are for sharing individually, but if I keep it to one I’d say I think it’s a follow-on from the disappointment the other night.

“You’re going to have them over the course of the season. I know it’s a new group and they haven’t had those good shared experiences yet and maybe not found that real resilience to bounce back from a defeat in the way we would want, but that starts the next day at the training ground.

“That disappointment probably came into the performance today and we can’t have that because, to be successful in the Championship, being resilient and robust individually and collectively is right up on the top of the charts and I didn’t think we were tonight.

“We’ve spoken about that, we’ll address it and we need to individually and collectively find more.”

Blackburn boss Valerian Ismael was in no doubt that Blues midfielder Azor Matusiwa should have been sent off when he brought down Ryoya Morishita when he was breaking through towards goal in the first half.

Quizzed on his view of the incident, in which the Dutchman was shown his eight yellow card of the season, McKenna said: “For my eyes on the sideline, it could have gone either way. He’s ahead of Azor, you’ve also got a really quick player [Leif Davis] chasing him down and he’s at a little bit of an angle.

“I’d normally want the referee not to send the player off if it’s borderline in the first half. Other than that, I’m sure if I was on their side I would have wanted the red card as well. It went our way tonight.”

The game was the restaging of the match in September which was abandoned in the 80th minute at 1-0 to Rovers with the Blues down to 10 men following Jacob Greaves’s sending off.

Town’s late equaliser this evening appeared to vindicate the EFL’s decision to replay the fixture rather than award the result to the Lancastrians.

“I’ve spoken about the replay loads,” McKenna said when asked whether he felt that was the case. “For me, you could feel it tonight, it’s obviously still something the opponent is upset about. That’s fair enough, I’m sure in their position they feel hard done by.

“I don’t think there’s any other decision that would have been fair. I said it after the last time, games of football can be crazy, can change on anything and in those conditions and what happened on the last occasions, there was no other way other than to play the game tonight.”

Quizzed on the messaging to the players ahead of the back-to-back home games against leaders Coventry and fourth-placed Stoke City on Saturday and Tuesday, McKenna added: “As always, some of the messaging has to stay private and inside, but the main one for me is that your response doesn’t start in the next match, your response is how you are with the group, how you are in training, how you are the next day.

“Part of a winning culture, a winning group is that when you have those setbacks a large majority of the group are coming in with a determination not just to show their very, very best of themselves the next day, but also to help others, to push others, to get around others. That’s what we need to see on Thursday morning.

“We’ll give the players a day off after the travel we’ve had and the late arrival tomorrow, everyone needs to recover and refresh.

“And then on Thursday, everyone needs to come in ready to give the absolute best of themselves, but also to step up and give to the group and that’s what you need when you have a setback.

“Tonight, in terms of the late result, we could sit here and kid ourselves and say, ‘what a brilliant away point, what a great goal’. Of course, we’ll try and take those positives, but in reality the performance, it was a bit step back and we pride ourselves on trying to be the best that we can be.

“So we need to find a response that starts on Thursday morning that builds the confidence, that builds the trust, that builds the resilience in a team that we’re going to need when we face a really good team at Portman Road on Saturday.”

McKenna refused to blame tiredness for the display, the game having been the third on the road in eight days and the fourth of a run of seven in 22 days.

“No, I don’t use it,” he said. “Maybe it has, maybe it hasn’t. But, for me, no excuses.”

Meanwhile, McKenna confirmed the injury Wes Burns suffered in the U21s last night is nothing too significant, the Welshman having been subbed at half-time on his comeback following the ACL tear which has kept him out since January.

“No, a big gash on his leg,” he said. “Thankfully, it doesn’t look like any major ligament damage, so hopefully just a minor setback. Hopefully won’t take too long to heal up.”

I won't pile on McKenna, but I do feel for those who spend their hard earned following that. It was dire.

What I hope happens is the dropping, for a period of time, of players that are playing that badly and don't let them anywhere near the first team squad untl they have sorted themselves out - be it form or between the ears.

There are some who don't look like they want to be there. Football is cruel when it doesn't go well and it appears some of our players can't cope with it

Unfortunately, these poor performances are becoming the norm !!

McKenna is the best manager Town have had since Magilton. The years since Magic Jim, up until the rise to the Prem started, were some of the worst football ever seen at ITFC. McKenna does need to look past the one and only tactic we currently employ, it has to be said but let's be careful what we wish for folks.

At least he is not trying to hide it, which a lesser man would after a last minute equaliser. The reality is recruitment was poor over the summer, however he does have to take the blame for constant changes. One or 2 id expect but 4/5 a game just means we never click

Yes it was another very poor performance last night. But how many of those of you calling for KM to go would have accepted now being in 7th position in the league at the start of the season?. Keep the faith, there is a long way to go!.

Morsy, Chaplin, Burns. Three reasons why this team is mentally weak as pi$$.
At least Wes is on the road back. If Chaplin isn't recalled in January we may as well get used to this.

Get Chaplin and Burns back in the Team.
Current lot look lost but not sure how much this is down to the constant changes every game and the recruitment has been dire, no one stands out.
I guess we will go out and buy in January but keep McKenna until the end of season and take stock then.

It's not about the training FFS,
It's about taking it over the white line and that's where you and the players let yourselves down the club and the fan base,

I’m glad you can see it Kieran because that was awful the worst I’ve seen for a long time. Actually felt sorry for Blackburn because we deserved nothing from that game, a kick in the teeth for them. we were so lucky to get a point. The highlight was Egeli as soon as he come on he was running with the ball putting crosses in the box. Im happy for him he scored his first town goal. Felt sorry for Taylor & Azon thought they were the only 2 up for it. Keeping Matusiwa on for the 2nd half, I don’t understand he had a stinker.
Didn’t even bring Furlong on. Nunez should have started and don’t get me started on Akpom & McAteer. Awful performance but got a point & 7th a point from playoffs, there is still hope. Got to buck our ideas up for next 3 tough games. COYBS

McKenna is a coach, the training ground is his natural home. He is not a manager.

Sadly this is becoming the norm under McKenna.

We're light years away from the "team" of 2 years ago and that is 100% down to him for destroying that team spirit for the sake of wasting millions.

If the slow build out play from the keeper was leading to exciting attacking football creating chance after chance then you could understand this "style" BUT it isn''t doing - it's boring, turgid & sends me to sleep..it's depressing watching us now..even the manager looks depressed & bored with the "project".

Give me the 2023 team over this lot everyday of the year.

After all the comments about the first game being postponed and the decision not to send off the Ipswich player and then see a last minute equaliser, some times these factors are meant to be, And I would never be surprised to see the two clubs drawn against each other in the FA Cup in early January. And the Blackburn manager will have to watch from the stands after his outburst last night. Football has a strange habit of throwing up teams having to play each other in cups after controversial league games.

Big questions to be asked at all Levels and the strategy or lack of strategy in recruitment is a huge factor. Ashton said that we were going to sign athletic players capable of playing in the Premier league, We've assembled a team of weaklings struggling to compete against teams assembled at a fraction of the cost who run more and are stronger
The least we can expect of anyone is to compete- win that physical battle, job number 1 - and for the last 3 games we have not done that. It could get ugly on Saturday

I still believe in McKenna but we must start mixing up our style of play. We are too slow, ponderous and predictable. Building out from the back is good but it takes ages and when we do eventually get the ball in a dangerous area we just turn around and play backwards only to start the build up once again. We take risks at the back playing out but when we get outside the opponents area we're suddenly reluctant to take any risks. The goal at Blackburn was a long ball into their area from our own half and we had players in the box competing for the ball and we scored. We must do those simple things more often and not be so predictable. I'd rather we took players on and lost the ball than loose it with a loose pass knocking the ball from side to side.
When we're defending and Walton claims the ball why do we wait for our opponents to run back and re-organise before we start playing out slowly? Now and again can't Walton just throw or boot the ball forward and we spring a fast attack?
Let's just occasionally take risks in attack and gamble on those loose balls instead of trying to score perfect footballing goals.
We MUST start mixing things up. The old ways still work and all goals count, you don't get anything more for a pretty goal than you do for a scruffy ugly one.

it proved two things last night , ONE it proved to Blackburn we could have scored in remaining time the first game, TWO we are nothing like a team thats worthy of promotion . BLackburn have been really poor at home ,but were better than us last night ,we got lucky at the last gasp .

Felt for Blackburn last night.
We didn't deserve that point at all.

How many changes for the Coventry game Kieran? Ten?
Its getting silly now, Most champ managers would kill to have so many quality players at their disposal and yet you cant even pick a decent starting line up....
Sorry, but you have ran out of ideas, you've been sussed out by other managers and cant seem to change a game when needed. The players seemed to have stopped playing for you too. Your Players that you got in.
Chappers and Burns would have grabbed that game by the scruff of the neck last night and got the job done.
In fact Chaplain should be starting for us every game and be club captain and you loaned him out!

If we aren't top six at Christmas you have to go.....
You have no plan B and after the last two games its pretty clear that you no longer have a plan A!
Last season was bad enough in the Prem, you had one system, This season is no different.
Something isn't right at the moment we can all see it, whether that's coaching, morale, confidence etc.

Countless millions spent, so weak up top, the whole team cant string two passes together.
Akpom is a unit, but seems so powder puff and gets knocked off the ball, Nunez isn't all that to be honest.
The players look disjointed, like its their first day of school together.

There is no fight or passion or willing to win the ball.
Set play is awful, open play is all over the place.

But at the end of the day, YOU are the manager and the buck stops with you my friend.

A very honest post match interview. I believe this squad has talent, but lacks a bit of steel. They fold under strong physical opposition too easily.
But look, we came down with Leicester and Southampton, all ex Premiere League clubs that come down immediately have a target on their backs. Every club wants their scalp.
Southampton sit 14th, and Leicester sit 16th.
We sit 7th. Both Southampton and Leicester are performing much worse than us. In my opinion, a lot of Town fans under estimated the Championship. There are a lot of clubs that adopt tactics little to do with football, or like last night, they just run themselves ragged.
Both Southampton and Leicester sacked their managers, it clearly hasn’t done them a lot of good. Sacking McKenna in my opinion, would also be a mistake. I believe he’ll get us up, either this season or next.

Well agree with McKenna on this one...it was shocking but he's gotta blame himself starting Akpom, McAteer and Azon all players that have contributed very little this season, players should be starting based on form (if there are that many) not just circulated every other game for a start and the next game a sub appearance and so on.

On the upside, maybe one of our forum 'experts' can step into McKenna's role and save us!

There are many who clearly have all the answers/insights - so hopefully one of them will soon be shipped in to turn us around...

In your eagerness to make derogatory comments about people who post on here, the fact that this is a platform where fans like to just share their opinions seems to have eluded you.
As far as I’m aware, no one has put himself or herself up to be ITFC’s new manager.
So instead of attempting to play the holier than thou fan, why not give us your constructive opinion on matters pertaining to ITFC, after all, it’s your entitlement, as well as everyone else’s.

I for one was getting annoyed with the last 6 or 7 games and the performances as even the games we've won the performance has been sh*te and I'm not one for calling for managers heads but I've seriously doubted Mckenna and his tactics or not have a plan b or c,negative football looking at the stats also but I heard a guy interviewed after last night and he made a good point we are 7th playing really badly so if we start playing as we know we should then we'll be up there with half the season left, the constant team changes doesn't help anyone to get partnerships going and hopefully we will thank Mckenna when the teams at the top have injuries and start losing points (that's what I keep telling myself anyway) and cos all our players have played at some point well be ok

Bazza8564 added 13:49 - Dec 3
Whilst I agree with the reasons for letting Morsy go on age and Chaplin to get a regular game the fact is that we haven't adequately replaced either of them.

We continue with Akpom in the 10 when he is clearly a 9 and we lack the cohesion that Sam gave us.

The simple fact about the tippy tappy stuff is that we have no driving movement forward from MF and no come deep movement from anybody in the 10 other than Nunez.

If you can't go forwards you end up going sideways. It'sthe lack of quality in those positions thats the issue, not the system

If Szmodics isnt going to be fit enough to return and start every game we simply have to get CC back in January, or we buy a 9 10 and an 8 as well as a proper cover for Oshea in January.

This squad, on paper, is light years better that the championship side from 2 years ago, but as with any recipe, any ingredients missing and you are stuffed!
