Ashton: TV Documentary Not Us
Friday, 19th Dec 2025 09:51

Chairman and CEO Mark Ashton says there’ll be no Town TV documentary, despite revealing a Netflix executive is among the Blues’ US investors.

Fellow Championship sides Wrexham and Birmingham have both featured in high profile documentary series over the last few seasons but Ashton, speaking at the PLC AGM on Tuesday, says Town won’t be following suit, even though there has been interest.

“I’d never work again, everything would be bleeped!” Ashton joked.

“We’ve had a handful of approaches and one of the most senior executives at Netflix is an investor in the stack.

“Both myself and [manager] Kieran [McKenna], and the senior management team, we’re so busy just doing the day job and just getting on with it. We try our best to effectively communicate to fans.

“It’s not us, we just try and get on with the job. I can feel myself sweating just thinking about it!

“It’s not on the horizon, but we have been approached. I’m not sure they’d understand my accent, to be honest.”

Totally agree with this decision, Birmingham and Wrexham may well of thought that it was a good idea, but for me, there’s a certain self indulgence about it, it’s also crass.

For me, I’m a bit on the fence about something like a documentary.

If it’s made with the intention of targeting Ipswich Town fans, I’d definitely be on board with that. However, if it’s produced primarily for a global audience as a promotional tool, which from a business standpoint, I can’t deny makes more sense. But as poet says, it does come across as a bit “crass.”

Agree with Poet on this. Self indulgent and unnecessary.

dont believe this, we our owned by investors. If they think they will make a few extra million they would clealy do a documentary. Clearly if there has been any real interest it hasnt been enough.
For self indulgence comments seems odd. We're happy to give a a pop star a squad number but wouldn't like to see behind the scenes. Each to their own I suppose. Reality is if it was going to happen would have been best to have shown the rise from league 1.

Bluewhiteboy - I'd suggest that our investors are way more savvy than that and understand the law of diminishing returns. There's been loads of these documentaries - does the market want another? I'd think Mr Netflix would probably know that 'build it and they will come' doesn't always work. What would be the USP for an audience to our docu-series? Another US owned club? Another sleeping giant story?

Also I think the club deserves more credit here, identifying the benefit in the long term rather than a quick cash in which could be a distraction to the project.

Right call by the club.

I don’t think it is something we should be doing. It doesn’t suit the nature of our club. We have Ed Sheeran and that’s celebrity enough without the club living its life like an open wound.

Birmingham DOUBLED their commercial revenue, in part down to the TV doc, and global coverage.

It’s the right decision for Mark and Kieran, it’s been a poor 18 months, and I’m sure they could do without distractions.

Specifically if we don’t go up, and lose parachute revenue (in the prem by definition we get global coverage) this will age like a smelly cheese.

The reach, revenue, brand recognition globally are vital in this age. The games reach has never been bigger, and thanks to our journey, it was a unique opportunity to put us on the world map, attract the commercial revenue that could reach decades in to the future.

I’ve travelled a fare bit last few years and the Ed reach in North America specifically, is something I think people don’t quite understand the potential.., supported by TV, that market is aching to be developed, especially with our ownership - I’ve met so many ‘Wrexham’ supporters buying their products, who couldn’t find it on a map.

They love a narrative and the Ed one along with promotions. WAS unique.

Opportunity missed.

Sometimes I think too many people, want to keep us small, and not make the difficult and sometimes uncomfortable decisions, that come with scale and growth.

We should have done it .., not ideal .., but a commercial necessity in this environment.

Tens of millions of genuine (newish) US based fans alone itching for a reason to support an English ‘journey’ and in a World Cup year too.

Sigh - one day we’ll see and fulfill our full potential .., it’s bigger than the current vision. Much bigger.

After reading previous posts by Darkhorse, I get the feeling if the club had decided to make a documentary he would say that it was a terrible idea.

I enjoyed the original 'All or nothing' series on Prime and I'd have loved to have watched one tracking the initial take over from Evans, the new owners walking around the stadium for the first time and their reactions to the state of the facilities, through to those back to back promotions. Would have been box office viewing!

That said, the moment has passed now.

Might have been an interesting concept, as long as it was done properly, and not looking like some stupid Hollywood blockbuster. I take the view that any exposure on a global stage is good exposure, but I also understand the point of view that we have so much going on at the club at the moment, it would be difficult to fit everything in. The point darkhorse28 made about people buying Wrexham products and not having a clue where it is, is well made. I would imagine we've had similar because of the Ed Sheeran connection. Maybe another time?

Seen one - seen them all ?
Surely there is only a certain amount of team huddles that can be filmed and surprisingly disappointing team talks by managers.
The only way these programmes get more interesting to the neutral is by looking deeper into the day to day runnings (not going to happen) or through scandal.

Skip73 you’re right, it’s just a commercial a financial necessity. As a decision, I think if we were in the prem, it’s a decision 100% for Mark and KM.., in the EFL it becomes such a big opportunity, revenue and reach wise, that the owners need to be stronger (if it’s something they want).

If we stay in the EFL, obviously we can’t keep KM and most of the players we’d want to retain, that’s the reality at this level of revenue …, this would have taken some of the pressure off, in that context it makes a lot of sense.

Marks overreach I think is a huge problem. He’s made us very commercial with boxing and Ed etc, but didn’t want this because it made him uncomfortable, I think that’s not ideal.

The last 18 months of results, with him paying managers more than out EFL TV revenue, it’s more essential than ever…, doesn’t mean I like football docs, I’d watch us, but haven’t seen Wrexham and Birmingham tbh.

I don’t need to personally like something, for it to be a good idea, and to benefit the club.

I’d watch us though .., I’ll pop down and give an interview on how we should play 4-4-2.

A missed opportunity. The world needs more things Ipswich. If we think small, we are small, and I don’t think we are. We differ on that. I don’t measure us against league one, or Fleetwood, and I think (sadly) too many people do that, to keep expectations massively low after the Evans years.

That’s a shame. Especially when we’re in a similar position on the pitch…, we need to think bigger and act more elite, if that’s where we want to be.

We need owners that provide more oversight in truth, giving one person everything they ask for, is only great if that one person has all the answers. One person seldom does.

darkhorse28, " if we think small we are small " very true that. In the context of world wide football we are a lot bigger than the great majority. I say think big. To use a phrase I turn to, now and then. " Better to aim for the top and fail, than aim for the bottom and succeed " .
