Samuelsson Link Sat 14th Oct 2000 10:57 Town are being linked with SK Brann Bergen midfielder Svante Samuelsson. The 28-year-old is apparently to be watched by Town on Sunday when his side meet Lillestrom. Brann are a bit on the broke side at the moment and might be willing to get rid of Samuelsson, although with a record of just two goals last season he doesn't sound like the kind of player Town would be after. A Norwegian agent, Stig Lillejord, is quoted saying: "It is not impossible that they would buy him". Which is about as vague as it gets. |

Addendum Fri 13th Oct 2000 11:12 Apologies, previous mail should have read: "Wright's replacement is likely to be Scowcroft". Scowy replacing Bramble at the back? Reminds me of the Duncan era. |
Sheepshanks Hits Back Fri 13th Oct 2000 11:04 The Verheyen affair trundles on this morning with Town chairman David Sheepshanks reacting angrily to claims that Club Brugge are set to report Town to FIFA. The Belgians say Town have made an illegal approach for Verheyen by talking to the player without his club's permission which is an offence under FIFA rules. The Town chairman said: "We are not aware of any charge or any wrong-doing on our part. We have had a friendly discussion with the managing director of Brugge over the last few weeks but recognise that they are unwilling sellers and unhappy about the way the situation has developed. I cannot comment further." |
Town to be Reported Thu 12th Oct 2000 18:46 The increasingly bizarre Gert Verheyen Affair (or Verheyengate) has twisted a new turn today with reports suggesting Town are to be reported to FIFA over their handling of the deal/non-deal. |
Pub Team Wins! Thu 12th Oct 2000 11:29 Jim Magilton returns to Portman Road today with egg on his face, as "Pub Team" Iceland beat Jim's Nortern Ireland with a goal in the dying minutes of the game following a blunder by the keeper. Elsewhere, Matt Holland stayed on the bench after a pretty one sided match at Lansdowne Road, the Irish beating Estonia 2-0. |
Gert Transfer Off - For Now! Thu 12th Oct 2000 11:13 The proposed transfer of Belgian Internation Gert Verheyen took yet another twist when the player decided not to use the 1978 law mentioned in yesterday's Newsnet. Whilst he is perfectly in his right to use the law to his advantage, he considers it morally wrong to force his club to sell in this way. However, he could not rule out that if another club came in for him in the future and the Brugge board stood in his way once more, he will use whatever is in his power to leave the club. |
Bramble Has Nightmare Game Wed 11th Oct 2000 11:14 George Burley last night watched Titus Bramble play in the England U21 match against Finland. |
1978 Law Aids Town Wed 11th Oct 2000 10:39 As reported earlier this month, Gert Verheyen desperately wants to join Ipswich, and it seems he is threatening to use a law created in 1978 to get his way. While the finer details of the law are not yet known, it seems that this effectively gives him a get-out clause which would mean that Ipswich would only have to pay compensation to the Belgian Club, to the tune of £100,000 which amounts to Gert's wages for the 4 years remaining on his contract! No wonder the international, who scored for his country at the weekend, is keen to join the Club. Initial estimates of Gert tripling his wages seem way off the mark. |
