Yeh, another vote to remain the Ipswich way...
McKennaball was operating at play off form since he took over.
Had we a decent striker who tucked away a few of the numerous clear cut chances we created, we could have taken more points of the likes of Morecombe, Cheltenham, Oxford, Dons and Shrews for example - which would have had us operating at auto form.
So the options are buy a striker or change the entire culture of the club? I know what I think would be more effective. And want to watch.
I'm entirely confident that with a summer transfer window and a pre-season to further embed the vision into the squad, Town will come out of the blocks firing next season and our "style" will be more than sufficient to get out of this league. I know that it's unfashionable to beleive after 20 years of hurt, but I think our ducks are finally in a row.
Last season we took 6 points of shysterhousers Wycombe. We only took 3 points of shysterhousers Accrington and no points of virtually non-shysterhousing Bolton. The principle reason for this is how well or badly we played and how many chances we did or didn't create and score.
It's got nothing to do with how much we cheated and antagonised the opposition.
At the end of the day, we can't affect 500 or so games in the league we're not involved in, only the 46 we are, so it really doesn't matter what "style" other teams are playing most of the time. Let them cheat and kick lumps out of each other for all I care. For the 46 we're involved in, we need 90 points and we don't need to stoop to Accys level to achieve it.
And finally. perhaps one of the reasons a lot of teams promoted from League 1 struggle is they're going up on the basis of shysterhousery? Better to go up playing a brand of football that will be more effective, surely? |

A better striker that scores Norwoods chance and makes better runs for Thompsons cross and Woolfies run and we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Bonnes movement during that run was diabolical. Couldn’t decide between straying offside or hiding in the underpants of the one defender. |

I think we’re creating enough to win, as usual.
The Norwood miss and the low cross from Thompson are tap ins. If Burns hadn’t strayed offside that could have been a 3rd clear cut chance. That’s 3 in a half away to a promotion chasing side. |

My view is one of positivity and belief. We’re no longer suffering turgid hoofball or directionless ineptitude.
I’m absolutely convinced McKenna is a gem and whilst some people forget he’s at the very beginning of his managerial career - I think he’s going to go on to have a top career. In the meantime, were lucky to have him and without going over all the issues again, suffice to say I think he’s got off to a cracking start all things considered.
More than that I think he deserves this summer to tune the squad and embed his methods and that should, in all likelihood, inspire a slight further improvement in our PPG. On that basis I’m pretty confident we’ll get out of this league next season.
People criticise him for the lack of goals at the moment but he’s not the one missing sitters from a couple of yards out. His tactics are already creating enough clear cut goal scoring opportunities to be beating Morecombe, Cheltenham and Cambridge at least… |

In McKenna's 18 games in charge, we're 6th, 3 points of Automatic.
He's achieved that based on inheriting an unbalanced and rudderless squad of players, several of whom are not of the type or calibre that he would have signed (or kept) to fit his system and only 2 weeks before the transfer window giving little time to identify and rectify matters... That he's managed to coach and LIFT the team to the level he has, is more than we could have expected.
I do not think it's unreasonable to suggest that with a summer to revise the squad to fit his system and further embed his vision on the training pitch might conjure a further slight improvement in form, say by 3 points over an 18 game period...
Who knows, but the idea that McKenna's form is in any way responsible for missing out on promotion this season is absurd. Had Cook not left us adrift and out of sorts, the par dropped points at this stage would not be crucial. In the same way that Rotherham have been beaten 3-0 at home by Shrewsbury and 4-2 by Fleetwood, yet they're still in an auto spot... |

McKenna has us picking up points at the same rate as Rotherham, the team at the top of the table, since he's been in charge, so obviously it is working. To expect more than that, instantly, with a team that had been put together and coached entirely to Cooks vision (and who were not performing well) is a wildly unrealistic expectation. Rotherham are settled team with an established identity, Wigan were put together by the man in charge. McKenna has matched that without any of the underlying advantages and had to implement his vision instantly, yet has matched their consistency over 12 or so games. Yes we play tight meaning we hardly conceed and score not to many, but that is obviously largely a consequence of the limitations of the squad he currently has at his disposal. I'm sure we'll score more next season once KMac has tweaked the squad. |

Yup and it wasn't just the start of the season either (as Cook apologists like to narrate).
We only got 7 points from Cook's last 6 games (2ppg being 12) and 9 from the last 10 including the interim fixtures (2ppg being 20) so as well as McKenna having to turn the form around, it's clear as a whistle that the decision was made too late. Had the decision been made 1 month earlier, we'd have approximately 6 more points on the board now (at 2ppg) meaning we'd be well in the PO conversation and 2 months earlier perhaps 12 (at 2ppg) meaning we'd be virtually home and hosed.
Some people still think Cook wasn't given enough time! |

KMac has turned us into an auto-promotion form team with Cooks squad, that had not gelled in 30 games, we’re poorly coached and had more or less given up. He’s totally changed the way we play even though some of the existing players are not best suited to it. I’m sure he’d be doing even better if HE had been given the support and latitude to bin the entire squad and start again buying players perfectly meeting his vision.
Any criticism of our current performances, under the circumstances, is laughable imo.
If we’re still in Div 1 next season and KMac gets even a portion of the backing Cook enjoyed, he’ll make the necessary tweaks to this squad and we’ll be flying next season. |

Not worried at all.
I’m certain we’ll start next season with a stronger squad that this one, with a number of fringe players sold and some quality” McKenna” players brought in that do fit system and ethos. |
