Handball by Ironside...
at 19:55 4 Feb 2023

Did anybody else (not the ref obvs) spot the very obvious handball by Joe Ironside in the build up to the penalty? I saw it at the time and it's also very clear on the highlights. Was surprised it wasn't in Phil's report. I was in Habbin South, so maybe had a better view from side on.

Didn't matter as Walton saved the pen and he had a decent game for first time in a while.
Thought Edwards and Donacien were good after coming on. Some good bits and pieces from Broadhead too.

But yet another terrible result vs awful opposition. How bad were Keogh, Morsy and Evans?
Time to focus on the playoffs and next season, sadly.

At least it was a nice short journey home on the train!

Reflections on the match yesterday
at 11:39 15 Jan 2023

Deliberately waited a day before posting. Wanted to take some time to reflect.

Only my 2nd match of the season (also went to Pompey match). Sat in Cobbold lower towards North stand. Parked at Gatwick obvs.

Great crowd and good atmosphere, especially the German lads and the huge flags. Decent match - good advert for 3rd division. Ref was okay - no obvious moans this week. Maybe a bit quick to book Burns for his first silly foul and quite tolerant of lots of fouls from Plymouth in the first half.

Excellent goal from Burns, well set up by Davis and Woolfenden. Frustrating to concede yet another inevitable late goal. Hirst looked pretty lively when he came on. Thought the subs were okay - KVY and Humphreys did fine too. We definitely have a soft underbelly/ mental weakness - never expect us to defend a lead, since the Charlton match. Hate all that nonsense with Walton and defenders messing about at goal kicks. It seems very high risk for very little reward.

Plymouth were pretty impressive, and they were way better than when I saw them (nil-nil draw) at Cambridge in early December. Very lucky for us that Hardie somehow hit the bar from 8 yards. Cooper is a great keeper - so quick off his line to deny Burns. Their 3 centre backs all looked very solid too. We lost momentum during the 5 mins delay when Scarr was injured, and they certainly took their time getting him off, getting a fresh shirt, etc.

Think that they will keep going and will win the league, by a few points. Don't fancy us in the playoffs at all. So we have to find a way to somehow overhaul the Owls. It will help if we beat them and Plymouth beat them this month. Hopefully they will stay in the FA Cup for a few more rounds too, and pick up some suspensions and injuries, plus a fixture backlog.

So it's not over yet, but is looking very difficult now. We are defo regretting all those points thrown away with silly draws against poor teams. Easy to forget that McKenna is still new-ish in post, and learning as he goes. We will somehow have to find a way to get points from tough fixtures with Derby, Barnsley, Bolton, Wycombe, Posh, etc.

Top 3 teams, Remaining matches, Predictions thread
at 12:21 31 Dec 2022

A bit geeky I know, but I couldn't resist looking at all remaining fixtures for the top 3 teams, and doing some predictions.
See my forecast below - with all 3 teams maintaining their hot run of form, and going past 90 points!

1st Ipswich 95 pts (GD of +47)
2nd Plymouth 94 pts (GD of +35)
3rd Sheff Weds 92 pts (GD of +38)

I predict Town dropping points against:
Bolton, Barnsley (losses)
Oxford, Cambridge, Sheff Weds, MK Franchise, Derby, Cheltenham, Peterborough (draws)

But winning the others against:
Lincoln, Plymouth, Morecambe, Accrington, Bristol Rovers, Forest Green, Burton, Shrewsbury, Wycombe, Charlton, Port Vale, Exeter, Fleetwood

March looks like a tough month for Town, with only 3 points from 3 games (losing at Reebok and Oakwell).
So it will be critical to collect a big points haul in Jan (predicting 14 pts from 6 games), Feb (predicting 11 pts from 5 games), April (predicting 17 pts from 7 games).

On the final match day in May I predict wins for Town vs Fleetwood, and for Argyle vs Port Vale, but a costly draw for the Owls vs Derby.

What do the TWTD hive mind think? Am i being wildly optimistic?!?

Cambridge vs Plymouth observations
at 09:30 11 Dec 2022

I went to the Abbey Stadium yesterday to take a closer look at our promotion rivals Argyle. Thoughts as follows.

Cambridge looked the stronger team, they played some decent stuff, and they missed 2 very good chances in the second half. Bonner was too cautious and only made attacking subs with about 10 mins left.

Cosgrove upfront for Argyle is a big lump and a niggly fouling sh1thouse. But he did hit the bar from a corner.

Argyle looked pacey and dangerous on the counter attack especially down the flanks. Hardie was quite forgettable though. Wilson still looks solid at centre half. Their keeper Cooper is decent and he made two good saves.

Standout players for Cambridge were Smith up front and Rossi, Jones at centre back. Digby is still a dreadful footballer. Lankester is inconsistent, but more bad than good.

The Abbey is a great little stadium and that terrace behind the goal generates a lot of noise. Lovely atmospheric walk through a frosty Coldham Common to get there.

Ref was pretty bad. So its a 3rd division thing, not just an Ipswich thing. He did helpfully give 5 yellow cards to Argyle though.

Bobby Robson, more than a manager

Just watched it again.
A brilliant and wonderful man.
Such a fantastic film. We were so lucky to be managed by him for so long.
The range of football people who rated him so highly really speaks volumes.

Injury time goals - for and against (last 2 seasons)
at 22:25 29 Oct 2022

Is my memory playing tricks? We seem to give away late goals that cost us points, far more often than scoring late goals to gain us points. Haven't checked the records but from memory.

Point Gains from late goals:
Last year - equaliser at Morecambe, any others?
This year - ???

Point Losses from late goals
Last year - equaliser at Oxford, any others?
This year - Sheff Weds, Plymouth, Charlton

Maybe I am just a bit pessimistic after the let-down of today.
Do any of the board stattos have access to a more definitive record please?

Strikers for next season?
at 08:12 20 Mar 2022

The consensus seems to be that we need 2 new strikers next season, to score the necessary 25 to 30 goals for automatic promotion from this awful 3rd division.

So who do people suggest that we sign?

Presumably McKenna will get a young striker in on loan from Man Ure.

How about Cole Stockton from Morecambe, or Alfie May from Cheltenham?

We tried a similar formula for Pigott, but that has clearly not worked.

Any other realistic targets out there?

Penalty decisions this season.
at 16:07 29 Feb 2020

Feels like we have been very unlucky on multiple penalty decisions this season. Or do I have selective memory?
Not awarded very clear pens for fouls at Blackpool or Oxford.
Penalised for joke pens for dives at home to Blackpool and Accrington.
Any other examples to support or challenge my assertion?

Non league matches today?

So who are you all watching today then folks?
I'm in Rotherhithe for an FA vase match. Fisher FC vs Glebe FC.
Cracking little ground 20 mins walk from Canada Water tube, but rather wet and windy. Looking forward to it.
Good luck to all the Thurlow Nunn teams in the vase today.

Pubs in Bury showing the match
at 19:36 25 Feb 2017

I am planning to pop in to Bury on my way back from a 10 mile race near Stowmarket tomorrow. Only really know the big Wetherspoons in middle of town tbh. Please can anyone recommend a decent pub that will be showing the match in Bury? Decent food a bonus!

Shameless charity sponsorship plug
at 16:20 8 Jan 2017

Hi folks.

Long time twtd reader and very occasional poster here.
My favourite cheese is Somerset Brie btw.

Was very impressed by the great TWTD teamwork and fund raising for the banner for young Oliver for Boxing day.
So am hoping to tap in to that community spirit once more.

After 2.5 years of running 10k and half marathons i've taken the plunge and will be running the London marathon on 23rd April, for a great little UK kids charity called MACS. Training is going well and fund raising has also started very positively.

Please see link below to my just giving page. Myself and the charity will be truly grateful for any donation, no matter how small.
