Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Jewell Left Feeling Sick After Second Late Defeat
Saturday, 26th Nov 2011 18:17

Blues boss Paul Jewell was left feeling “sick” after his side surrendered a 2-1 lead late on for the second week running. The Town manager again cited individual errors as his team conceded twice from set pieces, just as they did at Nottingham Forest a week ago.

Jewell said: “We didn’t play great, it was a nervous performance and in the situation we’re in that’s going to be the case.

“If we could have hung on for the win, it would have been great for the confidence but the goals we’re giving away from set plays and the third one are just beyond comprehension really. Sick is the right word.”

The Blues manager said players weren’t doing their jobs: “If there was never a mistake in a game, every game would end 0-0, but people have got their man to mark and they didn’t, basically. We got away with a couple in the first half as well.

“Individual errors cost us. What we’re trying to do from the throw-in [on the third], I just don’t know. From that, you get the feeling they’re going to score because that’s the way it is with us at the moment.

“We should have seen the last two games out. If we were mentally tough we should have got six points out of the last two games. But at the moment, because our confidence is so low, every time the ball goes in our box we’re nervous.”

Jewell said he brought on Jimmy Bullard late on to try to help see the game out: “We tried to play 4-3-3 and just shore it up a little bit, but we didn’t keep the ball, we didn’t pass the ball really, but even so, the goals we gave away didn’t come from that, they came from people not marking.”

One positive was Daryl Murphy’s performance and goal: “Considering he hasn’t played for a while, I thought Daryl did very well. His goal was great for him.”

The Town manager says skipper Grant Leadbitter is likely to miss out at Burnley on Tuesday, while keeper David Stockdale and Ibrahima Sonko are doubts: “Grant’s got a nasty groin injury, so that was why we had to make that substitution. We tried to put Reece in there but unfortunately we couldn’t keep them out.

“I would have thought Grant would be out for Tuesday. He limped badly into the dressing room so I would have thought so.

“Stocks did his shoulder in training on Monday afternoon. We don’t think it’s too serious but we don’t know if he’ll be available for Tuesday. Richard wasn’t to blame for any of the goals.

“Sonko’s only trained once with the first team [after his hamstring injury], so we’ll have to see how he comes through tomorrow and Monday.

“I think we’ll have to make one or two changes for injuries [at Burnley]. We’ll have to see how everyone is in the morning.”

Reading manager Brian McDermott admitted he wasn’t confident of a victory as the 90-minute mark approached: “I thought it was going to go against us again at 2-1 down with not long to go.

“I thought we started the game really well, the first 20 minutes. We didn’t get the goal we needed in the first half, then we gave a goal away for a set play which was disappointing. We got back into the game, then we gave another goal away that we’re not happy with.

“But I always feel that with the team that we’ve got and with the group of people that we’ve got, we can score late goals.

"When it got back to two-all, there’s a lot of difference between one point and three and we thought the third goal was a quality goal. I’m delighted with the win.”

To keep publicly criticising your players helps build confidence PJ. You really are out of touch. On paper we have excellent players, you signed them Jewell but you have lacked any defensive organisation skills from day one. Not signing proper defenders in summer is shocking management.

And you think you're sick Jewell, there are plenty of us sick to the teeth with the rubbish that you and your team produce, excuses, excuses, just admit it mate, you are clueless and don't know how to turn this around, never mind we'll soon be in the bottom 3 and then, just maybe ME will need to make a decision.

More excuses week in week out PJ. We're the ones paying good harm earned money in this recession to watch the worst football I've seen at Portman Road since the John Duncan era, and I thought things were bad under Keane.

I give PJ till New Year and if things aren't better, see ya later, or we'll definitely be League 1 next season

tractorboy2434 beat me to it, if PJ feels sick he needs to think how we feel, i really cannot see any way out of this other than the obvious dismissal of Jewel but i am not sure that is the answer, i feel the players need to stand up and take the responsibility for some shocking performances.

Jewell, you are clueless.

This is a long term project, 2-3 years, but we need to see a clear vision and plan. At present we gave a manager that has no idea who is best 11 is or how to play them.

So, I am not suggesting that PJ gets sacked, but I am suggesting he publically states why he should not, and that needs to come in the form of a two year vision and action plan to achieve said vision.

Well I was expecting a defeat, but wasn't expecting the personnel jewell put out, I hope this result doesn't put jewell off a flat 442 and the only changes that are made are Bullard in for leadbitter and to bring in sonko and stockdale if they are fit to really give the side a chance to settle.

things are only going to get worse,i could not do any better before anyone else says but i also aint on his wages, can we really blame the manager again i dont know this has been going on since we got relegated from the premier league 6 matches was all george burley was given after he led us the year before to 5th in the premiership and a place in european cup players were sold which got us there fact, what is it going to take people say ipswich are a premier league side but really in its 19 year existence we have only been there 3 and not looking at getting there anytime soon if we are relegated from this league we are not going to do what norwich have done no way ,now jewell out is not going to get us what we want i think its time to look at clegg and evans because this has never worked under them fact always been in this league.joe royle was the last manager who actually looked like getting us promoted before these two were here fact jewell out is not the way maybe he is facing what roy keane did

Not as sick as I was Jewillio, and when you kicked that bottle of water in despair you were very lucky it did not hit anyone, otherwise you would have had more than a team to worry about !!!.
At the moment you are leading us down the DERBY ROAD so please stop I want to get off. 16,500 ipswich fans watched that rubbish today, somebody on this forum last week quoted 16,0000 they were not far out,
If we do not get anything from Burnley Tues. there will be less than that next Sat. and we just cannot carry on like this. what say you Mr. Evans ??????

This is a real low and it feels like we are walking into a certain defeat Tuesday at Burnley to make it six defeats in a row.

Different managers, different players, but the same old defeats. Marcus Evans must be wondering if he is under some sort of curse! (we were playing good football under Magiltin just before he bought the club!). If we want to realise our promotion ambitions, then we need to invest heavily in the team (more than the £3M on transfer fees that Jewell has spent) or have a long-term plan investing in youth. The even changing loanees and free transfers will not take us up.

Sorry but Jewell coompletely out of his depth, absolutley no progress in fact I think we we're a better team under Magilton and even Keane. Big question is where do we go from here. Changing managers every 5 minutes is not the answer but neither is Jewell. Who has made these decisions ? That's the problem not sure if it's clegg or ME but we are in deep deep trouble. 1 point of the drop and survival is the only goal this year

Horrible feeling of deja vu.In 3 weeks time we may be in touch of the play offs again but at this moment we are in a relegation battle,no denying it bcus any team that concedes at such a rate or so late in a game so often is always going to be brittle. Mentally these players must be frazzled but its time to MAN UP.No need for wholesale changes,6wks ago we were watching the best football we d seen for a number of seasons, admittedly only for 4or5games but theyve shown they can do it,now theyve gotta do it again. It doesnt take a lot in this division. Bristol city were "DOWN" a month ago,now theyre the form side and talking of a play off push. The way we feel tonite its hard to "keep the faith" but thats all you can do.

Very poor performance and very poor substitutions which cost us the points. When will PJ learn from his mistakes. We have the worst defence in the league but he still takes off attackers in order to protect a lead. We are not good enough to defend a lead. Surely a positive approach would be to try and win the game by scorong another goal. It would also entertain the bored silent crowd.
I love Richard Wright but I felt sorry for him today . He couldn't kick, didn't command the 6 yard box and gave them a goal.
Few positives other than the more attacking line up. If you play wide players you have to give them the ball not keep hoofing it forward.
Excellent goal from Priskin on his debut. Showed what he can do when he receives the ball on the deck. We must start playing football or we'll be in the bottom 3 loan players will return and we'll struggle to attract any replacements.

A the start of the season PJ says this is a 2-3 plan and to be fair John Lyall finished well down the table after the first season before gaining promotion. But even if we manage to avoid relagation this season and finish say 15th, who do we build the team around next season? Many of our better players are loanees, i.e Collins & Andrews, with most of the players we have on our books approaching the end of their careers.

The only players who could be here for the duration of 2-3 years are the likes of Cresswell, Carson, JET, Chopra and Leadbitter (if he signs). Perhaps Murrey may still be here. The rest as I say will have left due age or having returned to their loan clubs.

So what happens next season, does the whole process start all over again, i.e loan deals and ageing ex prem players. I really hope not, as paying £502 for a season ticket and £45 for petrol per game doesn't seem to tempting. We need a change of manager now, who could we tempt in on loan if we are in League 1?

Jewell Out!

Yeah thank God Leadbitter's injured (because he wasn't going to be dropped). Can anybody tell me if Ipswich have lost 5 games running in this division before (or the old Div 2 back in the 80's)??.

Really can't believe how bad things have become recently, and please don't anybody say we have a 2/3 year plan, no we don't, he wouldn't have gambled on buying so many old crocs with Premiership experience if that was the case and PJ would be consistantly playing some of our youthful players i.e. Carson, O'Connor etc rather than some trash he has bought (we all know the names).

I'll give him until the New Year if this carries on, but as others have mentioned going down to League 1 might be a bib big wake up call (but I can never see ME excepting that).

Bored of this tripe now, and it is tripe. Of the six goals conceded in the last two games now 5 have been headers and four have come beyond the last 5 minutes of a game. I'm a fan of giving managers a chance but this is just getting ridiculous now. Evans just needs to get someone with some real pedigree in. Someone who has been consistent throughout and works well in the transfer market. Lord help us but I see us in the bottom three come end of the year.
