Town in Ellington Exit Talks
Town in Ellington Exit Talks
Tuesday, 8th May 2012 23:30

Town and striker Nathan Ellington’s representatives are understood to be in talks regarding the settlement of the 30-year-old’s Blues contract. Ellington, who played for manager Paul Jewell at Wigan, has made only three starts — just one in the league — and 14 sub appearances without scoring since signing on a free transfer from Watford last summer.

Speaking recently, Jewell, who flew out on holiday earlier today, indicated that he wouldn’t stand in the frontman’s way if he wanted to move on despite having a year left on his contract: “He’s been disappointing Duke, there’s no two ways about it.

“I see him every day in training and I saw a piece where he said he hadn’t had a chance, but what he does in training, or what he doesn’t do, or what other people do in training can highly influence my decision on a Saturday.

“He hasn’t had a run in the team, there’s no doubt about that, but since he left Wigan he hasn’t really had a run in anyone’s team. Maybe he’s one that might have to leave in the summer.”

The Blues boss also said that Jaime Peters might be better off moving on as well after a season in which he featured in only the Carling Cup defeat to Northampton: “I think it’s about time Jaime moved on as well.”

to be fair he never really got a good run in the team, its a shame really because i thought this might of been a punt that paid off, luckly we got him on a free and not paid any money for him.

Whoever agreed to give a man who has only scored 17 goals since 2007 (with most coming in greece) a two year contract deserves to me castrated in the club shop.

Will not be missed.

Shame as thought this may turn out to be a good gamble. At least no huge fee involved to bring him in.

Agree a settlement??? Yes he's under contract but its the sign of the times that a player this poor has blokes sorting out how much more he can screw out of this club.

Another pathetic Jewell signing to add to the list.

Best for all- he's been utterly useless. Go and get a third striker who can push Chopra and Scotland, properly push them.

Panic buying of the worst kind. How much has his one start cost us?

Probably around £1m after we have paid his contract out. People get sacked for making mistakes like this. Not our scouse g*bsh*te.

Could have run the Academy for year with this cash.

Well at least he wasn't a complete waste of money...oh wait!

1 million Walberswick!? Think you're making up stories again aren't you? That would put him on 10k a week. Not likely is it? Job at the Sun awaits for you...

walberswick added 00:26 - May 9
How much do you think he was getting paid a week? £5000?

Keaneish added 00:32 - May 9
Yep, that's more like it!

As SheffieldBlue says, he hasn't done anything since 2007, arguably since 2005! Can't imagine he's coming into PR on a 10k a week contract on the back of three loan contracts either at 29! I think it was probably positioned as, 'you've got something to prove, here's a chance to resurrect your career on what money we offer you as you're not blessed with offers. Take it or leave it'.

he wont have been getting £5k, more like half that.... he was out of contract and needed a club..... tides turn when its like that and youre 30 and not setting the world on fire...... watch and see how many far better players that Ellington are in his position not long before the season starts in August....... then they might realise the bubble is bursting.......

If he was on that much money he would be happy to sit on that final year of his contract, not take a settlement on it. Suspect much of his wages were appearance based, but he didn't do enough in training to merit extra appearances. Also sends a message to the rest of the squad that no one, including old pals and new signings, will get preferential treatment and will have to work hard to earn a place in the team...

Shame it didn't work out. I thought PJ might be able to get him back to his old self, but sadly it wasn't to be...

so no transfer fee to bring him in .. a good thing of course. What about the salary he's been drawing all year to keep the bench warm ? - Of course he was a waste of money, a daft signing - It's amazing that Clegg comes out & says that we cant afford to up the wages of 1st year pros beyond 250 quid a week - PJ is paid to be a manager not a gambler - which means developing a strategy - i reckon we'd have got better value from keeping three youngsters on the books rather than bringing in PJs mates

I think it's time for Jewell to move on.

Very odd signing in hindsight and ultimately a big mistake. I have to say though I agree with the player, I don't think he was given enough of a chance.

Ironically in his little cameos he didn't actually look that bad. He held it up well, got up well for headers, certainly wasn't 'useless'.

I don't think he would have done any worse a job than Chopra was doing at some points during the season, Ellington could have been given a few more starts.

Obviously I'm not saying we should keep hold of the guy, he is ultimately not the required standard and not what we want, I just think he could have done a job if given the opportunity. Some players don't train well but when it comes to a match situation they spring into life.

never got a chance, too busy playing one up front!

Reading took a chance on the 5/6 years older, Roberts, and that paid off big time - sometimes they work out sometimes they don't. PJ would have lashed by most on here if he tried to bring Roberts in during the Jsnuary window. As for getting the sack for making mistakes like this Walberswick; did Sir Alex get the boot for the far costlier Kleiberson, Demba Demba or even Jordi or that keeperTaibi (spelling?).

I know Jewell has made some disasterous signings, (inc Ellington) but Jewell is here to stay (certainly for now), he will be the person who identifies any new signings, I think he's learnt his lesson from his "dads army" signings! Although I feel that Clegg & Evans must have pushed him in the direction of a quick fix. What pleases me now though, is this complete clearance of the "dead wood" : Wright, Healy, Leadbitter, Sonko, priskin, Ellington, bowyer, (i'm sure there's more!) I know some of them are Jewells bad signings, but even so, I feel for the first time in years we are truly clearing the decks to make room for some new blood.

2 year contract, Got that one right as well did we Clegg?

We are going to need someone to sit on the bench ,not all squad players can play regularly ,Ellington was definately worth a gamble in this role on low wages and no fee .Next season maybe Murray will be better suited but from his time at Swindon maybe still not good enough ?
If we sign another striker the idiots on here will be slating Scotland or Chopra for not scoring next year as he will be on the bench collecting his wages !!

suffolk_n_Good - sad thing is that we seem to get 11 new blood signings every season - that's the problem, only half of them are only ever any good, they become the following season's deadwood!

A disappointing flop, but if he was on £4K-a-week for a year and they agree, say, 2/3rds of this as a pay off for year two that's a total wage bill of £347K so perhaps around £400K altogether with signing on fee and agent's fee?

Let's compare to Keane's striker flop Priskin. £8K-a-week for three years perhaps, plus a £1.7M transfer fee, less about £300K earned from loan deals = £2.6M.

I thought priskin was on 15 k a week or so. Makes this guy seem like a bargain and a success

Blimey jewell has seen the light at last.
Not much light to see really, what a waist of time.
Bring in a decent striker please. The likes of Taylor, Madine & fuller who have been mentioned would be good. What about ebanks Blake from wolves he would be a great player for us!! I know his wages could be a problem but first team football is the key. who knows?!!
