Edwards Joins Millwall
Wednesday, 21st May 2014 15:04

Former skipper Carlos Edwards has agreed to join his loan club Millwall on a one-year deal. The 35-year-old was out of contract at Town this summer.

The Lions were unbeaten during Edwards’s eight games on loan towards the end of the season as they escaped relegation with the former Luton and Wrexham man, who scored one goal, largely playing at right-back.

The Trinidad and Tobago international told the Lions official site that the relegation battle didn’t even come into his thoughts when he made the move to the Den, his opportunities having been limited during his final season with the Blues.

"I didn't even think about the league position, to be honest,” he said. “I was just really keen to go to Millwall and play, and it soon became clear to me that we had enough in the dressing room to go on a run and get the results we needed.

“For me it was really exciting because we were playing good football and getting wins and draws every game, so I was enjoying myself. To stay up was great and now I'm delighted to be joining the club on a permanent basis and really looking forward to next season.”

Edwards made 170 starts and 21 substitute appearances for the Blues, scoring 10 goals, having been signed by Roy Keane from his former club Sunderland for £1.35 million in the summer of 2009.

Dream on people - Carlos's wages being freed up for another signing / signings ??? - you just have to be joking of course.

Never worth the money paid in my opinion, in terms of quality goals/assists.

But he's been a great servant to the club and the fitness he continues to show at his age is incredible. He'll do a good job for Millwall at right back, as he did for us. He may have been a right winger for Sunderland, but for Ipswich? Never.

His best moments include his thunderbolt away at Sheffield Wednesday, of which there were a few, and his last minute winner at Derby last season that basically kept us up.

Cheers Carlos!

Echo most other posters' sentiments. Best wishes for the future, Carlos, and thanks for all your efforts for ITFC. That late goal at Derby will live long in the memory!

For those saying waste of money, it's because we wasted him at right back for 3 years

Not sure he offered much more as a wide mid either TractorCam.

Keanish .. Spot on assessment for me , was a big name coming down a division and didn't deliver for first two seasons in his natural position and then was played out of position because of this and the need for more on the wing and was a liability to the defence as he was always out of position , did improve as time went on but never an excellent signing for the transfer fee and end product . Anderson has probably done more this season ?

Why the negative comments? never a right back at Sunderland put in a position which never suited him. Had he been placed in the right position from day one we'd of seen a lot more from Carlos. All my SAFC fans rate him as one of there best players so we obviously never saw the best out of him. Good luck Carlos and thank you for all your hard work

You can't blame the player for the fee paid or wages given. What you can say about Edwards is he always put in 100% and has been an important player for us over the last five years. If all the other players signed in that time showed the same level of professionalism and application that Carlos did, we would have been competing for the play-offs throughout.

Best of luck Carlos.

bendanward... Keane signed him and never played him at right back , he preferred to play centre backs there .He played his natural position for all of that time until Jewell took over ?
And as you say we never saw the best of him during his time here compared to Sunderland so was not value for money ?

Quite a few saying about him playing out of his natural position for us, and so the move should be good for him... well, he's moving to the club he ended the season on loan with - that played him in most of his games for them at right back.

I think Carlos for a year or two was probably our best player in terms of quality on the ball and passing (which says it all about the Keane/PJ era) - he has been a reasonable servant to the club and wish him well for the rest of his career but a bit of a question mark on the money we spent on him, but then again there were many flops in that period which we wasted money on!

Wonderful pro and MM should have kept him on considering some of the deadwood we still have floating round the club. He genuinely cared for the club and gave his all and I had the occasion to meet him and he came across as a humble and committed man. Good luck Carlos as it was a pleasure having you here and you will be welcomed backed warmly by all and sundry and will go down in the Ipswich annals as one of the few shining lights in the tormented period following on from Jim Magilton's sacking in April 2009.

.......... for all you people who prattle on about MM's 'people management skills' - hasn't exactly treated Edwards the way one would expect, on his exit from the Club - has he ?

According to the EADT article today - Carlos is not exactly best pleased with the disrespect element - and rightly so.

Never complained about having to play out of position, and always done his best for our Club - therefore deserved better.

Agree with blueboy1981 entirely. Spoke to Carlos a few months ago and he said he could not understand why he was being frozen out and why MM was not speaking to him as he had never complained and did what was asked of him. He seemed very peeved and slighted to be honest. As part of the Italian Branch team on account of me living near Milan and being an overseas supporter and being involved in the matches organized by the branch also to raise funds for the Charitable Trust, Carlos was always present and ready to assist and never shirked and seemed genuinely fond of the club. I imagine MM felt he was a threat to his authority but I will miss him and felt Ipswich could have done more to keep him and when you consider some of the antics of the likes of Chopra and Bullard who shamed our great club then it does not even bear comparison.
