Town Amongst Clubs Chasing Peterborough's Boyd
Town Amongst Clubs Chasing Peterborough's Boyd
Thursday, 13th May 2010 10:03

Town, Derby County and Middlesbrough are all reported to be targeting Peterborough United left midfielder George Boyd. The 24-year-old has just completed a loan spell at Nottingham Forest but is not expected to move to the City Ground on a permanent basis.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry confirmed that there are clubs chasing the ex-Stevenage Borough man but says no one has yet made an acceptable offer: “The chairman, manager and myself are all agreed that George will not be going anywhere if we don’t receive a bid that matches our valuation of him.

“There are clubs interested in signing him, but so far none have offered us enough to make us want to sell. And, believe me, if that situation does not change George will play for us next season.

“We are all determined to have a real go at getting straight back into the Championship and we will have a better chance with him than without him.”

The Scotland B international has another year left on his Peterborough contract and is valued at £2 million by Posh, having been one of the stars of their side as they climbed from League Two to the Championship before this season’s relegation. He has said he will not sign new terms at London Road.

Boyd, 6ft 1in tall, joined Peterborough from Stevenage in January 2007 for £265,000, Town having been one of a number of Football League clubs reported to have been keeping an eye on him during his time at Broadhall Way. Chatham-born Boyd had moved to Boro, for whom he also had a spell playing as a striker, in 2001 after leaving Charlton’s youth set-up.

Forest are understood to have paid £500,000 to take Boyd, who qualifies to play for Scotland via his grandfather, to the City Ground on loan in March, but he made only five starts and one sub appearance for the Tricky Trees. Boyd has made 157 starts and six sub appearances for the Posh, scoring 43 goals.

Middlesbrough are reported to have confirmed their interest in the ex-England National Game international (non-league England side) last month, while Blues boss Roy Keane has said he is looking to strengthen his left-sided options over the summer.

A lot of cash for a player who couldn't get in the Forest team!

a goal average of one just under every 4 games isnt too shabby for a midfielder, is it?

I know its not a lot to judge on but the two games I saw him play in against us I thought he looked very useful. Got some pace, good touch and by looks of stats scores a few goals.

Speaking to a Forest fan the other day he said the fans liked him while he was on loan, but just a very difficult side to break into, especially when they were doing so well. Think he was most likely brought in at forest to provide good cover in the lead up to the play-offs.

Fancy him as a good signing, but of course at a good price.

Saw him play against Town at Peerborugh.
Was the outstanding player on the pitch, had presence and touch of class about him.

Could be a very good signing even at the sort of money being talked about

Boyd is player number 8 we have been "linked with"!! I'm enjoying this game! 50 players before the season starts is def achievable!!

Went to watch a few Peterborough games during the season they got promoted from League 1 and he was a class above the rest. Hasn't got any pace but brilliant with the ball at his feet.

I saw a few Posh games last season and he did look the only member of the team who was consistently of a good championship standard. I wouldn't be unhappy if we signed him, but it depends how well Civelli recovers from his long lay off. Boyd was far less convincing in the withdrawn striker role he was sometimes given, so I see him as direct competition to Luca and not much else.

Not really seen the guy play so my comments fairly irrelevant but the last left midfielder we signed who'd been on loan at forest (and ex-Man utd) ie. Lee Martin wasn't great and if he hasn't got much pace then perhaps another Darren Currie - great passing and vision, just a bit too slow? Like I say, not seen the guy, but thats what sprung to my mind!

We would be stupid not to get him

Said it before, sayin' it again: We need pace! Boyd's a decent player but too similar to Daryl Murphy so it's an either/or situation for me; Murphy OR Boyd, not both.

COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

for me this would be exciting if this is true I went to both posh games last season and boyd looked quality, and certainly comfortable at Championship level and left sided as well which would add balance to our play, 2 million only seems an inflated price but look what we payed for martin? in my opinion boyd has shown he is better than martin, sign him up I say

Any game I saw him in last season he was by far their best player and we could do worse .

This looks like a classic Keane ' overpriced flop ' signing.

Dont do it Roy, at least not at that price.

I am Town through and through but Peterborough are currently my nearest team and so I see a LOT of them.
Over the last couple of seasons Boyd has been the Stand-Out player for him. He has skill, can take on a player, is not afraid to shoot, has a great work ethic and can cross and distribute the ball beautifully. To be honest, he's better than most, if not all, of our current players in terms of out-and-out-class, in my humble opinion.
This is the very first player-linkage that I've been genuinely excited about since Keane arrived.
Come on Roy, bring him in!!!!!

A player needs to be special at this level to cost £2M. I know little of Boyd and don't know how good he is, but the fact he didn't make an impact at Forest and it seems he has little pace is a concern. We do very much need pace; Haynes used to be our only really fast player and when he left the rest do look very pedestrian. Boyd's scoring record is good though and others have written he has skill, so maybe worth a look for a lower price.

The only real question about him though is he a character ?
