Town Target Leyton Orient Winger
Town Target Leyton Orient Winger
Tuesday, 15th Nov 2011 00:22

Town are understood to be ready to make a move for Leyton Orient’s 19-year-old winger or striker George Porter. The Blues are believed to be keen to take the pacy wideman on an initial loan with a view to a permanent deal which after milestone clauses could be worth as much as £500,000.

Porter joined Orient on a two-year deal in May 2010 from Ryman Premier League side Cray Wanderers after impressing during a trial at Brisbane Road, manager Russell Slade seeing him as one for the future: "George has huge potential. He's only had a year in football, but he has tons and tons of natural ability.”

Born in Sidcup, Porter made only one appearance for the O’s during his first season, spending time on loan with Lewes in the Blue Square Bet Premier, then back in the Ryman League with Hastings.

This season, 5ft 10in-tall Porter has made much more of an impression, scoring two goals in seven starts and 10 sub appearances, including one in Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Bromley. Charlton and Southend are amongst the other clubs to have been keeping an eye on his progress.

Happy on either flank as well as up front, Porter is lacking in experience but is very much the type of young, hungry player that manager Paul Jewell has repeatedly said he is looking to target to take the Blues forward.

What a rubbish signing that would be. He's not quick, he's not got a good scoring record, he's got no end product, he's not even a target man. £500k is a huge amount for an unproven 19 year old. I personally hope this one falls right through.

So you like the look of him, then, SuffolkNClose?

Since leaving Cray Wanderers he's played 42 games (25 of them in the Isthmian League Premier Division ) and scored 4 goals. Doesn't smack of genius for £500k

correct me if im wrong , apart from having good crossing skills and running at players, being a winger (not wide man ) normaly requires some pace . wingers normaly start with pace which declines with age . we are a fickle lot .

Highly thought of by the Orient fans. These are the type of signings we need.It seems he is very pacey and a good finisher given the opportunity. He is still very young but has the sounds of another Cresswell about him.

What part of the words 'one for the future' don't some of you understand? I trust PJ to make the right decision, he's our manager!!

"one for the future"?
If you are 19 years you should be able to play Championship football already.

There really are some idiots on here too old? Not going to be good enough? Waste of money? Just remember where Paul Mariner and Simon Milton came from Mariner came from Chorley via Plymouth and had only about 18 months pro experience whereas Milton cost us £5000 from Bury Town. Two great servants they were, people just need to get a grip and back the management AND STOP WHINING

Ummmm nice to see we have so many open minds on here.

Young, pacy (SuffolhNClose where did you get that he's not quick?), wideman, his manager thinks he has huge potential.

The article talks about taking him on loan, so we would only buy him IF he performs. Also the fee mentioned is not £500,000 unless he hits certain milestones.

If he turns out to be another Cresswell then that would be well worth it.

Crock - "If you are 19 years old you should be able to play championship already."

And I bet your one of those who's still screaming for 21 year old never played consistently in the championship Jordan Rhodes to come back.

Any excuse for a moan with you lot...

i think he is a bit too old if we are seriously thinking of recouping later in is career. Remember Connor Wickham made his first appearance for us at sixteen and Jason Dozzell was about the same age.

Seriously though, I know nothing about him.

If he's really that good, why splash it about on TWTD?

PJ should announce this after he has bought the player. Or is it Simple Simon and more of his Marketing for Dummies.

Sign him up and let's see if PJ and his scouts know what they're talking about. Otherwise it's all talk.

SuffolkNClose: If you want to see big name signings go and support man city or chelsea! instead of picking on a player before we have even signed him is really low! Close you TWTD account and go on a Man city or chelsea forum!

no pleasing some.... PJ always signing old crocks where are the young bloods moan moan moan..... now its PJ trying to sign unproven young lower league player moan moan moan moan..... do you lot not realise are are NOT manchester United, we will not be signing Messi any day soon so the fact we are out looking for raw talent such as Cresswell can only bode well for the future.

Clearly Town will not be paying out £500k for an unproven player at that level initially but if he comes good then it he could be worth more for them based on appearances etc.
This is the sort of player with potential and a hunger to prove himself that we need to find and bring on to a first team player in the future.

Well I'm going to try ignore the brainless side of the so called Ipswich fans! But from being a coach I know aswell as the average man 19 is not to old! Also let's not swap Priskin because if you saw him training you would change your mind. I which we could get Danny Haynes back I know alot of people don't like him but he does well at barnsley I think with the team we have now he would fit right in! But that's a personal opinion .

People seem to forget about players like Ian Wright signed from a non league team at 21, Drogba signed his first pro contract at 21, D J Campbell getting his chance at 24, Smalling, now at United.

Get over yourselves you armchair idiots. I used to sail at a very decent level, and have had the scalp of Ben Ainslie on my CV, he then progressed at a 'considerably' better rate than I, and now makes a living out of sailing. I also helped a young lad into sailing who is now a 2 time world champion. When I was that age they were tipping me for great things, I didn' though, my ability/hunger stalled, theirs went on.

The key is the fee could rise to £500,000. For example that could include matches played, goals scored and promotion amongst others. Read the article dim wits!!! And stop moaning, some of you lot would moan if a bunch of oil rich Arabs came along and promised us Man City type spending power! We were in administration a few years back and still in debt, things don't just happen over night, look at some clubs who over the years have been on the verge of pushing up the Championship table and trying to get to the promised land and now fallen on hard times, Plymouth being the most notable of late and how long has it taken Leeds to (partially) recover? Get with it, we've no given right to be in the Prem or make big money, big name signings.
