Town Target Tottenham's Aussie Kid

TWTD understands that Tottenham youngster Massimo Luongo is amongst the players manager Paul Jewell is hoping to bring to Portman Road ahead of the start of the new season. The 19-year-old Australian midfielder is available on a season-long loan.

Sydney-born Luongo joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing while on trial, having previously played for APIA Leichhardt Tigers in his homeland.

He made nine appearances for their U18s in the 2010/11 season, scoring three goals from central midfield, including one in a final day 2-1 defeat of the Blues.

By the beginning of last season he had impressed enough to make his senior debut — and miss the decisive spotkick in a shoot-out — as a 71st minute sub in a Carling Cup tie with Stoke. That remains his only first team appearance.

Capped twice by Australia at U20 level and called into senior training camps, 5ft 9½in tall Luongo also qualifies to play for Italy, the nation of his father's birth, and Indonesia, where his mother was born.

Speaking last Thursday, manager Paul Jewell said that even before academy director Bryan Klug returned to Playford Road from Spurs last month, he already had good connections at White Hart Lane.

Jewell was yet to speak to Klug about potential targets who have come through the Tottenham academy, but was well aware of their youth players and has regularly spoken to the Premier League club: “I haven’t spoken to him about that yet.

“We have a decent relationship with Spurs, I know [assistant first-team coach] Tim Sherwood quite well at Tottenham and I’ve been in dialogue with him over the summer.

“I’m actually seeing [former Spurs manager] Harry Redknapp tomorrow [last Friday], so he might be telling me about one or two good players. I have seen quite a bit of Spurs’ academy players.”

When Jewell said the media have fortunately not named most of our targets, did TWTD see that as a challenge?? ha-ha.

Will be interesting to see what happens with this one....been more than happy with the previous loan players from Spurs in recent years!

No good seeing Redknapp is it Jewllio, he's not there anymore!

Talk to AVB and Sherwood again and see what we can do. Livermore for the season would be good I think, slightly ambitious maybe, but I can't see him getting a look in under the new boss.

Any player Jewell targets is welcome though, I trust his judgement.

Garv you're so right, 'Arry will have forgotton all about the players he's been dealing with for the past 4 years!

Go for Livermore instead.

This sounds good we lack a bit of flair and creativity! Remember Keane getting Livermore on loan and never using him! Massively ambitious/no chance but i'd love to see Gio back!!

I trust Klug to give Jewell a decent assessment of the lad. Maybe Spurs will want Livermore at a prem club this year, he's played in the championship before and got a bit more experience last year?

Oh God, the dreaded loans. Seriously, what's the point?

I'm not saying that he isn't a good player but I don't actually want loan signings in the team. Carson can play in the middle as can Lawenson so we're improving other clubs young players at the expense of our own.

But if he is miles better than what we have I guess it'll be a good deal

Loans per se aren't a problem, it's getting the right loans. Young, hungry players with the quality and attitude to add to our squad is the key for me. Livermore, Colback and Townsend were great additions by Keane, just a shame he can't manage people and would rather play Peters, Healy and Priskin ahead of them. Look at the scum when they went up - Lansbury, Naughton and Pacheco. Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool - 3 young and quality players who were well managed.

Nothing wrong with a few of the right loanees in the side imo.

No no no no no. What would be the point. We have players of his age already here, lets not waste time on inexperienced loanies. Last season, the only really successful player in on loan was Keith Andrews & for a short while Collins, both of them being older & with premier league quality. We can do much better long term than this.

With any luck Spurs would take our CEO on loan
for a 10 year stint

If we get this loan does it mean that Hyam won't have much of a chance for regular first team football given the Kourouma should also soon be able to sign?

If so, then we should loan Hyam out to League 1! But I'd rather see him getting involved in regular football this year. Would be happy with the following line up:

Chops
Davies Martin Jet
Hyam Drury
Cress. Chamb. Smith Edwards
Keeper from the Mars Bar ad

Why is everybody concerned about a loan? Jewell did say he will wait on a few players to bring on loan. Full season loanee's i don't mind as much. Sometimes they can have an effect on your season and if he is better than what we have in midfield at the moment, i'd very much welcome him here. Gives some service for Chops and other players. Also will give competition for others in the squad.

Well if he is good on FM then that's all we need to know. Great observation. Sign him up and the the other 2000 half decent players on FM.

@Kiwi76 hense the 'no chance'. It's just a shame we can't attract players like that anymore that's all

Dont know anything about this kid. Not faulting him, but i would prefer a loan player with 30 odd premiership games under his belt, or else play our own kids.

I would only want to see young loanees come in if they are exceptional and immediately add to the team in a big way, or as cover for certain positions to save buying a replacement. If Luongo has only played once for Spurs, I am not sure we should sign him on loan. There is little point developing youngsters for other clubs, as we need to focus on our own.

Saw the name Luongo and thought they were talking about Roberto for a minute!! Still an NHL goaltender between the sticks for Town would be interesting!! Would have good reflexes at least!!

Dont know anything about this young man but i'm not too keen on loans, unless they are with a view to a permant signing, dont think this would be.I wonder where this leaves the like of Luke Hyam? PJ does not seem to rate him when most fans and pundits do, just a little worrying as i would like too see our own young players being played.
