[Blog] Light At The End of The Tunnel

Another Saturday goes by and still we seek our first win. Who would have thought as Halloween approaches and the dark nights draw in we, Ipswich Town FC, would be sitting bottom of the league with the vultures circling our club each wanting to have their piece of meat?

Has my club really become the laughing stock of the country? Can we, Ipswich Town FC, really be condemned to League One football this season? The answer unfortunately to both of those questions is yes. So what do we do?

Many people seem to think the answer is as simple as sacking Roy Keane and bringing in a replacement who will wave a magic wand and suddenly we will be world beaters. Say for instance we did sack Keane, who would we get to replace him?

1. Steve McClaren – Currently sitting top of the Dutch league and with a good chance of Champions League football next year. The chances of successfully poaching him are close to zero, and have we all forgot about the 'Wally with the brolly'.

2. David O'Leary - Another name I have heard mentioned. Now if anyone has read the books on Leeds United then this is one manager to steer clear off.

3. Alan Curbishley – Stated numerous times he wishes to manage in the Premier League and with our current situation the chances again would be zero.

So the likelihood is, if we sack Keane we would get a second rate manager or a has been who has failed at clubs previously.

In Keane we have a good manager with vast experience as a player at the highest level. People say that doesn’t make for a good manager and I agree, but Keane did do well at Sunderland and the only reason it went wrong was due to interference from board level.

So what has gone wrong this year? This season numerous players have underperformed and underperformed badly. To name a few, Richard Wright at times has played fantastic and kept us in games, however, at the same time he has made shocking errors which have cost us badly and at vital times in games knocked the stuffing out of the team.

The Newcastle game for me, as for many was shocking, I left the game embarrassed and I have not left a Town game feeling so low since that day in Bolton. During the last three away games, however, those who have attended saw a change in the team. Doncaster, Sheffield and Barnsley could have, and should have been three wins.

As it seems when you are at the bottom of the league, the ball always seems to drop the wrong way for our players but straight to one of the opposition. That is just the way luck goes and with time it will change, bad luck cant last nine months. For me it is at home the problems lie.

At Portman Road, as last season, it seems the players have a fear of making a mistake, and for that we the fans have to take some blame. It seems over the last few seasons we are very quick to barrack our own players for making a mistake, this only in turn knocks their confidence and the likelihood of more mistakes will follow.

What has happened to Portman Road being a wall of noise and a place opposition teams feared coming to? At Sheffield United the other night when they went 3-1 down their fans backed them 100% and made a hell of a noise and we know what happened. How can we forget that game against the Blades at home a few years back when we were 3-1 down and down to 10 men. I think we can all remember how the fans that day helped the team.

I believe Keane will turn it around and the first win will come in the next two home games. But we as fans have a huge role to be play also, every home game we must back the players 100% and make Portman Road a hard place to come to.

The away following we have is fantastic and the recent away displays have shown great signs of encouragement for the future. Trust Keane, back the players and we will start climbing the table again.

Seems fairly simple what has gone wrong this year. Last year our strong finish under Keane was artificial as it was almost entirely due to having an ex-Barcelona player in the team (Gio). This year, our manager has sold and dropped good players (D Wright, Rhodes, McCauley, Clarke, etc) and bought poor players in replacement (Delaney, Healy, Martin).
I think relegation might not be the worst thing for the club as it will mean a new regime that returns to building rather than buying teams. The only way ITFC will ever succeed.

The Doncaster 2nd half , Sheff Utd and Barnsley games we did play well and better than the opposition which is the worry because we still only picked up 2 points . If we cannot win playing well we are in trouble and the team is not good enough as we have been well beaten by Boro ,West Brom and Newcastle admittidely probably the best sides in the league but we were also outplayed by Leicester,Palace ,10 men Preston ,Peterboro in cup and for large part of the game Forest . As everyone says a win might be the boost we need to really kick on but if we do not get some good results over the next few games people have to realistically look at the fact we are not good enough .
What has happened to the loanee talk ,we need to get them in training with the team now or we will have unsettlement and gelling time again and we dont have the time .

Spot on and I agree about the home support (or lack of) you can see the players are nervous. Barracking them is counter productive and no doubt a real downer for them Away from home they get real support from some of the true supporters and not the abuse from the few that love to give certain players constant abuse. Something that has always happened at this club, no doubt the same idiots who constantly slag off the team and manager on here.
Well said ITFC_BLOOD.

Yep, can't disagree with your article, ITFC_Blood. Disappointing as the start of the season has been, right now we need continuity and stability both in management, and in a starting XI. Hiring and firing willy nilly will only cause more disruption and probably guarantee our Championship demise!

100% agree. And this is why those people who keep expressing negative opinions are being abused on here. Those of us trying to be optimistic that results will turn round feel that the negativity just fuels more negativity and ends up as booing at the ground. To a certain extent u r creating a self fulfilling prophecy as the team can not relax and play good football if they are afraid of their own fans turning on them. Visiting managers know this and use it to their advantage as well. I know already people will say "they are professionals, they should be able to deal with it", but first and foremost they are human beings, prone to the same weaknesses and fears as you and I. Try showing a bit of love instead of anger and frustration and u will see a significant improvement in even the most
'hopeless' player. It's all about confidence, and being criticised endlessly undermines confidence. Come on boys no matter what your opinion, and yes everyone has the right to one, we all need to support the team not criticise them. P.S. yes i have been taking loads of stick at work, mostly from glory boy supporters of the top four, but i wont let the 'bastards' get me down. I'm still standing tall, and even tho our winless run continues, they are getting less and less bullish :-)

I cannot understand booing players who are already low in confidence - its not the way to get the best out of people, whatever profession they are in. We should all get behind the team and give keane TIME. Supporting your team means just that imo.

this underlines what we as fans need to do. Back the players 100% even if they make mistakes, even if we lose 10-0. We are fans of out football club and no matter what we need to support them.
