[Blog] Oh My God, Have We Started Passing the Ball Again?
Written by Sindre94 on Friday, 30th Sep 2011 18:03

I'm in shock, I've just witnessed three Ipswich Town performances where we have been passing the ball around, kept possession and not hoofed it in famous Gareth McAuley style!

As we are heading into the colder and more snowy period of the year (well at least in Norway), we are also a part of an Ipswich fairytale which I am truly excited about. We have a new manager, 13 new players, of which all of them are of quality standard, positive fans, a good staff, and very important to Jewell and his crew's work, a supportive board.

Just recently, we got this Reece Wabara kid in on loan from Man City, a player I rate a lot, quality right-back, which both we and City will benefit from.

If I am setting up our team at the moment, I would have to think outside the form box. This is my generally preferred team, for example come November.

Formation: 4-1-2-1-2 Philosophy: Keeping the ball, tiring the opposition out.

Stockdale - Choice is simple, quality keeper who likes to start counter-attacks, but is also a great shot-stopper, and good in the box. Glad we got him. Easy choice

Wabara - Pacy, strong, powerful and hungry talent. He's also a natural defender, something I think we've lacked in Carlos, the defensive smartness, the marking, timing of tackles. I think Wabara has a lot more 'defending' in him. But by all means, Carlos will push for the place, without doubt. Not an easy choice

Sonko - Powerhouse! He is the defender we have been looking for, for years! He's strong (not as strong as my fellow country man Carew though, as Paul Jewell said) and has a lot of passion for the game. He's not the quickest, but he will head and kick it as Jewell says. Easy choice

Collins - Well, thank God we got him, it's been a while since I've seen such consistent and good defending throughout the whole 90 minutes of a match. He has got all the qualities of a centre-half, and his passing is also sublime! Easy choice.

Cresswell - One of the best bargains of 2011. I didn't know it was possible to get such a quality player in for so little with the talent he has. Poor Tranmere, when they look at him in a four or five years' time.

Excellent crosser of the ball, great will to join in with the attack, a passion for the game which is so vital in his development, and also a tendency to save us when we need it! (Coventry match). Big clubs in England, please take your eyes off this one! Easiest choice!

Bullard - Finally our beloved Jimmy is back, we've missed you all summer! To have a Jimmy Bullard in your team is good no matter what, he is an excellent passer of the ball, is great at set pieces and also ups the morale of the team.

As he is the holding player in my 'dream team', he will have to sit back a lot, and that is a role I think he is capable of fitting, because of his vision and passing skill. Easy choice

Andrews - Keith has been an important player for us so far, and I am very confident he will keep scoring goals for us! His goal for Ireland against Italy was an absolute thunderbolt if you've not seen it! Easy choice

Bowyer - Bowyer will have to be in this team, his experience, know-how and never-ending passion for the game is so important in this not yet settled team. He will also score important goals for us, something he proved on Tuesday! Very easy choice

JET - Well, I am sure you all question this choice by me, but it's simple. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas isn't a winger, he isn't a striker or a full-back, he is an attacking midfielder or a second striker who loves to find the spaces between the opponents' defence and midfield.

As Jewell has said, he is far from at full fitness, so I wouldn't put him in the team today, but as the season develops, he will play a part. He is young, very talented and has some amazing skills, it's only up to himself really. Remember me saying this, he will come good! Confident choice

Scotland - Oh my God, hasn't he changed? One season ago he looked uninterested to a lot of our fans, and lazy. To be very fair, I've always rated him. It's just that we used to hoof the ball under Keane, and Scotland doesn't fit that style.

He's returned from pre-season in top shape, and his attitude is as great as always, is there anyone at this club leading by example: meet Mr Scotland. New choice!

Chopra - Our most natural goalscorer for a long time, and he will come good. Quick, smart and a great finisher. Wait for it, his goalscoring run will come! Nothing more to say about him, he will show what he's capable of. Very easy choice.

Overall - I know it's weird if Jewell were to put Leadbitter on the bench as he is the captain, but I don't feel he is of the same quality as the other players. In my opinion, a permanently signed Danny Collins would be a good captain or maybe a Lee Bowyer.

Well, thanks for your time, and enjoy the football season, I will return with more blogs! COYB!

Sindre - Norwegian - 17 years of age. Don't blame me for my English, I'm born and bred Norwegian!

And for your information, I've seen Wabara a few times for City's reserves, and once for England's u-20s :)

Nice all except our fans.... definitely not positive but yes I'd agree with that and Leadbitter, he was good against coventy and apparently good against m'boro and west ham, so stick with the squad

Nicely written piece! Hard to disagree with most of it, although I don't know about JET. He needs to start coming on as a sub in that position to see how he plays!

Wenger considered him seriously, I think hes been underestimated so far by us Town fans, most because he hasnt got a chance to prove him self here yet!

Good blog but I believe our best bet is 3-5-2 with no real wingers in side we need our attacking full backs to provide the width.
Stockdale
Wabara Sonko Collins
Edwards Bullard Andrews Creswell
Bowyer
Chopra Scotland

A really good piece, Sindre, and you assessment of the squad is pretty well nailed on. My concern is around injuries and squad rotation - the older players will need resting as we progress through the campaign. Do you think that this formation will be unchanged even if there are injuries and suspensions?

In my opinion, it is really up to injuries and suspensions as you say, but I wouldnt want to chop and change it too much. If for example Bowyer and Andrews get a knock, we might wanna play a wider system, and bring a Lee Martin, or a Joshy Carson in.
But as we arent the quickest team in the league, a ball possessioned 4-1-2-1-2 suits our team well...

Good blog but I'm going to have to disagree regarding JET. In the formation we play atm we need 4 players willing to track back and don't feel JET will do that.

Remember that a few of those players are only here on loan and may not be about after January.
