[Blog] Thoughts and Views on the Latest Goings On at Portman Road
Written by Sindre94 on Wednesday, 11th Jul 2012 00:13

It's 10th July. I'm sitting here in Norway writing a blog about my sleeping football team, which will wake up for real on August 18th.

So far during this off-season period, we have signed Elliott Hewitt, a promising and highly-rated youngster from the Silkmen of Macclesfield, and Luke Chambers.

In my opinion, we have signed two good and ambitious footballers who will serve our club in years to come, unless they get sold. Compared to last year we've bought potential and hunger, and not experience and 'know-how'. I think this is a sign of a fresh start and new, inspiring ideas which hopefully will drive us on to be successful in the long term.

Looking forward in the transfer market and to who we should sign and add to our current squad, I am very, very unsure to be completely fair. Should we keep signing youngsters and look three or four years forward? Or should we add to this some experience?

In my opinion we should try and blend those two categories and find the 'perfect mix'. For example, a centre-half duo of Chambers and Tommy Smith is excellent, some experience blended with potential..

An older guy centrally in the park we have in Jimmy Bullard, and I think he could flourish for us this season. In fact, with all the skills he has on the ball, I think he has some unfinished business to complete.

We need a new goalkeeper, that's for sure. I'd like to see Scott Loach in to be fair, with his feelings and love for the club.

Hewitt will eventually be our right-back, I hope, until then Carlos Edwards will be our man for that position. We should get a new centre-back but perhaps only as backup. I still think Smith has time to improve vastly as a player.

Don't even need to mention left-back. I would like to play with two players centrally in midfield, Bullard and one more, perhaps Luke Hyam? I think we should get one more player in that position, maybe Cheick Kourouma is that one.

On the right wing I'd like to see JET, then behind the striker Lee Martin, a new left wing and Michael Chopra up top (alternatively with Steve Davies as a duo on top, moving Martin to the left wing removing the role behind the striker).

And last, I saw this interview with Neil Warnock earlier today. He was asked what his best Premier League moment with QPR was. Everyone would think that was the 1-0 victory against Chelsea, but no. He said his best moment with QPR in the Premier League was when they were 6-0 or 6-1 down against Fulham and the R's fans still chanted his name. Couldn't we give Paul Jewell AND the team a little bit of the same support this season, just to get the atmosphere and feelgood factor back at Portman Road?

It's a young team and they all deserve our support no matter how they perform because they are still trying their best. Give the team support and I think we will see results.

Chambers tried to turn the Forest fans in that direction last year when they got booed off the pitch but it didn't work out. Let's prevent him from doing that at Ipswich!

Another blog later in the summer, COYB!

I was rushing putting this blog together as I don't have a lot of time at the moment, please forgive my at times bad English!

I'm not saying our fans are any bad at all, just saying we should keep our support up next season and improve it!
At least at home, our away atmosphere is electric.

Youth, youth, youth! I think we have enough experience in all depatments now we have Chambers.
Hyam and Bullard, on paper, should make an excellent pairing. Hyam's young legs and defensive qualities mean that Bullard can push forward to distribute the ball without having to worry about sprinting back if the attack falls apart.
I agree with Loach too although I think ALB could do a decent enough job if he had the backing of the manager and fans and knew that a loan keeper wasn't coming in every couple of months.
To me the atmosphere dropped when they took out the standing areas but plummeted when they added the 2nd tier on the North Stand.
In fact the only thing I disagree with you is that I think your English is damn near perfect.

Sindra94 :- Agree. We need the Twelth man in the form of a wall of noise at PR and not the rumblings of disappointment. Roll on August.

good blog. i think expectations are lower this year, given the emphasis on buying youth rather than seasoned pros who's only purpose is to get you up straight away, and this should make it easier for everyone to get behind the team

Sindre94, yet another thoughtful and well presented blog.
I find myself agreeing with you time and time again.
If only all of our fans were as passionate about the club as you are.

I agree, your english is great, even better than mine at some points! Lol but if we put Bullard beside Hyam, where will Drury go?

Bullard is never going to play twice a week regularly, so then it would be Bullard or Drury as the more creative type, plus Hyam or Kourouma as the more defensive partner, with Stevenson covering Martin in the attacking role. Drury could also cover JET on the right, or Carlos could play there with Hewitt at right-back. Left-side we still look one short though, with only Josh there at the moment presuming Martin plays in the middle. Nice one Sindre, no problem with your English at all, puts many native posters to shame.

Good blog, the atmosphere at PR definitely needs to improve, I think people would be surprised how much a postive crowd affects players performances.

The only thing I slightly disagree on is Tommy Smith. I'm not sure about him. I know he won man of the match on this website alot towards the end of the season. I really want him and Hyam to succeed and have academy products in our starting line up. BUT, I think we need somebody more proven over several seasons like Richard Keogh. This guy has been player of the season for the last 3 years (once at Carlisle, twice at Coventry), speaks volumes. Him and Chambers with Hyam in front of them and a reliable keeper and we would be very solid at the back

Great post Sindre. I completely agree about the fans noise making all the difference. I'd like to add that a football fan needs to raise the roof week in and week out, not just get quiet when we're losing a match or in a bad run of games. Us Ipswich "fans" seem to be up and down each week, which is part of the game, but we need more consistent fan noise and support, not just when it suits us and we're winning. Come on lads and ladies, let make some POSITIVE noise throughout each and every game.

We need a Pirlo who can trap the ball and spread the play. Jimmy Bullard may do the job. We have the spine of a good team now, Chopra, JET, Martin, Chambers. The priority would be a goalkeeper now. Thats the position that would show what Jewell can do for us.
