[Blog] Our Modern Fanbase Has Become a Disgrace!
Written by Sindre94 on Friday, 12th Aug 2011 16:39

Hi there, first of all I want to say that I am proud to be a Blue, but there's been a debated issue lately, that I want to write a few words about.

For you who have read my earlier blogs, you would know that I am always backing the club, the manager, and of course the not so loved Simon Clegg.

But lately I've noticed that we have a tiny group of childish, anti-social fans, who abuse certain players and managers during matches.

During my time as an Ipswich fan (from 1999), I've always been proud of the nice type of fans we've been had over the years. We've always been known as a very nice and respectful club, so it hurts me to say that we are slowly moving in the wrong direction.

Some of the 12-year-old 'fans' who are going to matches are singing ugly and disgusting chants regarding the former great footballer Justin Fashanu. I can't believe that 12-year-olds are singing songs about a player they didn't even experience during his best years. They don't even know how good he was!

It's just childish, dumb and I even dare to call them 'soft hooligans'.

So, a message to all of you sad haters out there, grow up, and stay away from football matches until you get rid of your disgusting attitudes.

By the way, when I'm at Town games, I'm always standing up and are singing throughout the whole match, I truly think we should keep the atmosphere! Just get rid of the abusive chants.

Thanks, Sindre - 17 years old - Norway

Yeah wel I sing them songs, and if you think about it if it weren't for fans like me then PR would be a library because the people moaning about this singing are the people not singing at all, I sing the fashanu song because tbh I think it's funny, and at the Norwich game obviously 4,000 Ipswich fans agreed because they were all singing it in the concourse, I'm not one of those fans who boo at every game and I try to sing as much as possible, thats all you can do.

I have to apologize now, I know I make it look that everyone is like that, it's not what I mean, I realise that I overreacted, sorry for that people. I just think we should get rid of these groups (luckily it's not many people)

You can't get rid of people you don't agree with. If I did this I'd be the only person at PR on a Saturday afternoon.

You absolute tw*ts. Its not a case of "disagreeing with someone".

I'd like to think that you all disagreed with what the Nazis stood for and successfully got rid of them.

Yes, you can get rid of people you don't agree with. And don't come back.

To be quite honest with you i have been going to Ipswich since the late 70's anf over the last few years it has gone from being Fortress Portman Road to Cathedral Portman Road, years ago we used to have a great vocal support and the crowd was always the 12th man. Over the last 20 years we have steadily gone downhill at home and i think that in part is due to the lack of atmosphere. I'm all for singing at Ipswich and that is what it is all about abusing the away fans (verbally). I think we should be getting behind the players and abusing the away players/fans not sitting in mostly silence. The home players love it when they know the crowd is behind them.

Mr Rikksow, what's your obsession with abusing opposing fans/players? It DOES NOT make a good atmosphere.

wesleyITFC ,you are a moron. When you grow up a bit ,you will realise that there are boundries in life ,and that you are on the wrong side of one.Just because you had 4000 others in you choir doesnt make you clever or right.

If WesleyITFC is fine with the Fashanu song, I'm guessing he doesn't object to songs about dead prostitutes coming from away supporters?

Not sure where i stand wit this debate, can see both sides. Abusing opposition fans is all part of it. Its builds atmosphere and atmosphere is what pumps players up. I think whats more embaressing is when the whole of PR sits in silence for 90 mins, with the exeption of the north stand. I do agree however that, as stated in elizabeths post earlier today, that smoke bombs andflares like those at p'boro last yeAr are going a bit far.

I am all for banter with away fans and making an atmosphere at Portman road - the atmosphere there at the moment is an embarrassment !! However I am certainly against racist/homophobic chanting.
Surely we can give the away fans some stick and support our team in a more vocal way than we do now without lowering ourselves to these sorts of chants ??

The Fashanu chant is well known in Finland and always raises a smile!

Oh piss off BlueBadger, I can tell you're one of the blanket crew, sitting in silece with a flask next to your feet, whether you agree with that song or not it will be song, amongst other songs that we sing. It probably will, pretty sure Norwich fans have a song about them,...

Wesley,

I was at the Norwich game, dont recall 4000 fans singing it.

Especially as they only gave us 2500 seats.

Wesley you typify the idiot being referred to 'one of the blanket crew'
just because some fans do not share your love of singing, standing up etc and because they are older or have more brain cells , does not make them less a fan.

Personally I like the noise and appreciate the efforts of those that generate the atmosphere but the abuse of our own is pretty pathetic.
I confronted one of the to$$ers at Colly the other night and he slunk off.
The message is we dont need the idiots.

itfc_steve, even when the away fans were in the North and there was a genuine atmosphere at PR, it was only the North that made any noise. The exceptions were a half-hearted 'c'mon you blues' from Churchmans at a corner and there were a group of about 30 at the North Stand end of the Pioneer stand which occasionally got on their feet. Otherwise, it was no different to now.
The killer was the removal of the low roof of the North Stand.

I agree, we don't need the abusive idiots and never have.

I went to the game today and I sat in the south stand for a change, you could of heard a church mouse in that stand, get behind the players.COYB

Chanting ugly chants is NOT atmosphere, it's a disgrace. If you wanna create an atmosphere sing songs like "We're the finest football team------) you know, you don't sing abusive chants!

Our fans have changed over the last few years, no doubt about it. The Fashanu song and the even more ludicrous "Grant Holt's a pedophile" effort at the last derby match were pathetic. If that was the best we can manage we'd best give up now! I can remember the atmosphere at PR being like a cauldron, but it's got gradually worse year on year. It seems we need massive adversity (1-3 down to Boro last year) or rank injustice to wake even parts of the North Stand up these days. Say what you will about that lot up the road but their support, home and away, has put us to shame in the last couple of years, it pains me to say.

i prefer it when there's more noise at Portman road, and will start songs to get things going (eg when andrews came on).

but for the same reason i would rather stay at home than go and see Bernard Manning, like most other fans i would rather sit in a "library" then have to listen to xenophobic or homophobic lyrics.

surely we can come up with better banter than that.

(for the record I'm not too comfortable with making claims about Delia's sex life but I'm quite happy to let jimmy bullard sleep with my wife (metaphorically, at least) and to sing about it. I think she'd prefer keanu reeves)
