I’m not actually arguing with the result. They’re the best two players of the past decade. Who would you (or anyone) put up as world POTY for the last 12 months. Anyone that says Douglas can turn the lights off on the way out.

Harry Kane. Seriously though, Neymar has had a good year but it probably is Messi for me but Barca didn't have a great season so it's gone to Ronnie, who hasn't exactly had a shoddy year to be fair.

He's no Martyn Waghorn. Seriously though, taking 2017 as a calendar year, Ronaldo hasn't been the best player in the world. Messi and Neymar have both been better imo. Madrid had a great season last season but a lot of that was down to the emergence and development of some cracking younger players whilst Ronnie completed his transformation into a buff Gary Lineker.

Lots of journos hate Neymar and the way him and his dad handle things. My prediction if Citeh do well in the CL and if Belgium do well at the WC is de Bruyne.

Guillem balague has been saying this for the past 18 months, obviously he will be on the wane given his age and number of games he has played. He's one incredible athlete though, can't recall many bad injuries he has had.

I really rate de Bruyne, great player. I just think the Balon d'Or seems to have moved on to be almost entirely about goalscorer these days and someone like de Bruyne will get overlooked.

Agreed, I also think De Gea is worth a shout in the coming years.

It's all about the KO stages of the CL and as always Ronnie showed up - 8 goals from the quarters onwards I think. Since 2010/11 Ronnie has 29 goals in KO compared to 5 for MEssi

That's a depressingly reductive way of judging who the best player is.

I prefer Messi to watch personally - but in the last 2 years Ronaldo has been the driving force for his club side winning the biggest prize and Portugal winning the Euro's Messi didn't show up in the big games for Barca last year in the CL - they got smashed by PSG and then had the amazing win, and that was followed by Barca not scoring across 2 legs v Juve in the quarters. I'm sure he'll be back, but 2017 wasn't a good year for him in the club game and dragging a side like Argentina just to qualify for the World Cup isn't enough.

Perhaps it’s slightly too specific but there are many players who can score vs average teams in La Liga so surely to separate the best from the good it’s about the one who turns up for the big games, CR7 did that. I don’t think there’s ever been an A’s complete player as Ronaldo, and I’m not sure there ever will be again.

Ironically over their careers, Messi has a better goalscoring record against the better sides. By some distance too. If you're talking a complete player then Messi is way ahead in that respect, Ronnie is incredible at what he does but what he does is far more limited than Messi.

Messi had a good 2017 personally, he's scored and assisted more goals than Ronnie. Barca haven't been great (although they look better this season) and that is a factor. Real were excellent last season, and were far from a one man team. I'd have backed them to win the CL without Ronaldo.
