Birmingham point reduction 11:10 - Jan 14 with 4261 viewslmfcblue

I'm not sure if there is a post on here re this but hearing Birmingham have broken the FFP rule and could be getting a point reduction, will have to sell players to get some cash back and cant sign any players.
This would put them in the relegation mix!!

Aren't point reductions normally applied to the following season?

Unless things have changed, I believe point reductions are usually applied to the season that follows the judgement.

Depends when the breach occurred. FFP now works on a rolling, three-year cycle, i.e. the returns being looked at now relate to stuff which happened between summer 2015 and summer 2018. If they have overspent within that period (the limit is, IIRC £39m), then they will be liable for a penalty now.

Tho mostly, so far, those penalties have been in the form of transfer restrictions/embargoes, rather than points reductions.

This. I seem to remember if it's decided April onwards it would be applied to the next season? So it would be applied this year. Hopefully they will enforce. Being under a transfer embargo and exceeding the losses and then spending £2.5M on a player deserves a big punishment. We'll see if they do it though.

How many points are you hoping they lose? Have you seen the league table?

Break given the spending going on?! including a 20k a week player?

I don't really care, in terms of our fight to stay up. I just hope they get a heavy punishment for such a blatant disregard of the rules. Not for our benefit.

Unlikely, given how little we've spent in the preceding two seasons, plus the amount brought in by player sales in the summer. Additionally, expenditure on the Academy is excluded from losses for FFP puropses.

If it's the full 12, as was being talked about earlier in the season, theat would put them right in the manure. Very much doubt it will be that much, tho - more likely a transfer embargo.

I doubt it will be much help to us.

Even if the EFL dont bottle it, and who would put money on that, any such decision will probably end up being challenged in court and take years to resolve, along the lines of QPR.

It changed in the summer. 15 point deduction for Birmingham, they appealed it in August and the appeal hearing is in Feb.

All punishments now have to be applied in the current season

A points deduction is easier to enforce, being an internal adjustment to the EFL's own competition, rather than a fine which must be extracted from the club, with an only theoretical penalty of exclusion if they don't comply (complicated in the QPR case because they'd escaped to the Prem).

Ah, so 12 points is actually only moderately severe. Still think it unlikely they'll be hit that hard.

I see what you are saying but imagine if the points deduction leads to them being relegated. I would think a clever lawyer could have a field day regarding the resulting loss of income etc.

That should not figure in the EFL's decision on this in any way, but I bet it does!
