I had an ominous email in one of my inboxes a week or so ago threatening to send copies of the porn I had been looking at to all my contacts unless I paid $978 or something, thing is I don't look at porn (I know that is what someone who feels guilty about looking at porn would say and when I told one of my girlfriends about this she reckoned I must be the only one but I honestly don't look at internet porn...unless TWTD counts as some type of masochistic perversion). Doubt if it was this guy as he would have a trial upcoming but have I led a sheltered online life and this goes on all the time or is this relatively rare? |  |

Yes, I've had a couple of those. The sender had managed to find out one of my passwords, which made his threat to send his alleged videos of me watching porn sound more real. He's just got hold of a load of email addresses and passwords and is sending out the same email to everyone in the hope some of them have a guilty conscience and if a few people bite and send him money, he's quids in. |  |

It's very common. Data breaches have left some old account details for quite innocent sites vulnerable, so not only can they claim that you've been watching racy material ( with some webcam footage with you and the snorkel and marigolds) ) they can link you to an old password. It's a fishing exercise where some people will feel guilty/paranoid enough to pay up. Mind you even though the experts say that it's impossible to do what they threaten, it's still best to cover up your camera! |  | | |

I actually got a similar laptop lockdown message about five years ago when I tried to download an episode of Game of Thrones. Couldn’t switch the laptop off if close the message down. |  |

I have received three of these emails, all with passwords that are now long since redundant.
One of the passwords I didn't recognise, so I did an email search and it was an automated password sent by a site that I used once back in 2011 (I really should clear out my inbox!).
I knew this was a scam email considering I do not have a webcam and never have had.
Just chancing b'stards, but unfortunately there are some unfortunate people out there who might feel that they have something to hide and get sucked in. |  | | |
