Laptop recommendations 12:31 - Jun 10 with 2670 viewsLuk38644

I’ve decided to sell my desktop PC and get myself a laptop as I’m on-the-go a lot more these days but I’ve been out of the tech/laptop loop for quite a while and I’m wondering if anyone has any laptop recommendations?

I’m only looking for something cheap, up top £300-£400 and it doesn’t necessarily need to be fast or powerful, just a decent runner, decent processor with up to date features. I’ve looked st the Huawei models but they’re a bit pricey and I really don’t need to spend that much on a laptop!

Any help is appreciated TWTD’ers 👍

Depends on what you do, a little above that price range I would be inclined to say investigate a Surface pro, but I would need to know your intended main uses. For example, at 3-400 quid you're not really going to get a great all rounder (maybe an okay one), but you could get a decent laptop that performs well in a specific area, but poorly in others.

PS: My stock answer is always check pcspecialist.co.uk - included in the price you get the best customer service I have ever had with a computer company. My home office has 3 computers (2 dt one lt) from them and my business is starting to replace the old provider machines with PCS machines as they fail.

"...but you could get a decent laptop that performs well in a specific area, but poorly in others."

what if it's mainly going to be in and around Suffolk?

Actually I could counter this pun with quite a deep and involved answer that argues a computer can perform better in one geographical area to another, but I haven't fully converted into Sheldon just yet.

I used to use my desktop PC for business work as well as personal use, but the reason for change is due to the fact that I don’t need my PC for business work anymore, it will be purely for personal use, so just typical browsing, streaming, a few bits of software and that’s it really.

Just something that’s got a decent processor and decent RAM will suit me tbh! I’d be open to a touchscreen laptop as I’m aware a lot of laptops have it built in now but I’m not too fussed about that.

I've just bought a Lenovo ideapadv330s from John Lewis.

It's a belter.

However, as it is the machine from which I am typing it does have a few idiosyncrasies.
1) It doesn't like JC
2) It voted Brexit
3) It chooses Red sauce
4) Very rare steak.
5) Very fine Margeaux

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Looks as though gaming and graphics design aren't too high up the list here, so something probably with 8+gb ram and i3 equivalent with a run of the mill graphics card then I would assume

This one is a bit over budget once VAT is added, but I would probably look for a laptop that has comparable stats to these. You can go cheaper and get a celeron processor and 4gb of ram, but a number of people I talk to regret this as they soon become slow to boot and struggle to process streaming video without the sound tearing up, especially if using the optimal power setting.

Copy that on the 4gb being slow.
I suggest 8gb RAM minimum.
I was happy with 4gb and windows 7 and then took the red pill by upgrading to Windows 10 for free. Not much memory left now.
I've noticed that after every windows update a little bit more of my memory is taken by the operating system.
So, opt for 8gb as it's a small outlay to double the RAM.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Or forget Windows altogether and buy a Chromebook, a little pain to learn a slightly different system, a lot of gain to be able to do things without faff and endless upgrades.

I have looked into Chromebook's but I'm so used to Windows and the more advanced features that I think Chromebook would be slightly too basic.

That sounds exactly what I'm looking for!

My current desktop PC is getting on a bit but has 8GB DDR4 RAM, Intel dual-core 2.93 GHz and a fairly new AMD graphics card, so I'm anticipating that any budget laptop I buy will be either a downgrade or on level par with my PC, but my need for mobility has become more of a priority and the power/graphics potential a lot less of a necessity.

An i3 processor would be entirely sufficient and I am used to 8GB of RAM now so would probably need that in a laptop, so I'll have a good look around and see what I can find, but I'll avoid the Intel Celeron as like you say, I've not heard great things!

Cheers for your help.

I think Asus, Acer and Lenovo all have decent options in that price bracket if you're looking for something reliable and decent but non-spectacular. I'd look at a few lower priced Lenovo Ideapads first if it were me and see if they look like they'll do the job.

I avoid Acer at all costs personally. The contractor that comes in and does check ups and maintenance on our kit once showed us pictures of his back log with mostly acer laptops that have over heated just outside warranty. Says he thinks acer keeps more food on his table than their chief executive's table

Asus and Lenovo are fairly good though, so you got two quality picks in the bunch!

Yes I have a cheap Asus which has never given me any bother, though the feel of it is a bit flimsy.

My cheapy laptop is ASUS too based on their reputation for solid mother boards, though I agree that the build quality is hard to fully love

I, speaking from personal experience, would not regard an Acer as reliable.
