Those of you not fussed about the rising right wing locally 16:55 - Feb 8 with 18155 viewsmonytowbray

Well done, a friend shared this 3 hours ago. They’re now not even afraid to show their faces and recruit in Town.

You must be so proud.

I really don’t get this. Has anyone said it’s not Ok to be white?

Agreed but I think the point is that white supremacists have the Jehovah's Witnesses approach. One seemingly innocuous statement is the doorway to a world of damaging weirdness.

I was busying myself with seeing bands like Echo and the Bunnymen at the time and never caught any Two Tone until I saw The Selector a few years ago but friends who went to see Madness described it as wall to wall British Movement (support act Tenpole Tudor doing a full on greaser wind up despite the cans raining down on them) so The Specials gigs must have been something to be worse than that. Other bands who had gigs severely disrupted at the time were Stiff Little Fingers (when I saw them at The Gaumont on the 'Go For It' tour there was an old school friend of mine and his army mate throwing seig heils ffs) and The Ruts.

I don't recall The Specials ever playing Ipswich but I saw Madness, The Beat and The Selector and there was zero racial tension. Ipswich has never had any real racial tension, it is one of the most harmonious towns I know. At the same time most Specials gigs were disrupted by large scale disorder, at Cambridge there was a mini riot. Trouble at football and concerts wasn't like what some people perceive as "Trouble" now, I'm talking about genuine life threatening fear and razor slashed faces.

Football was the same, most clubs had a wall of nazi skinheads pressed up against the fences and cages seig heiling. The British Movement were recruiting at concerts and football matches up and down the country. I've mentioned this before but they tried it on The Cornhill once before a game and Tony Swallow and his merry men chased them out of town before coming in The Falcon jokingly handing out British Movement application forms.

Nothing is finite though and I am not suggesting that Ipswich doesn't have a few odd bods but I doubt that bloke was even from Ipswich, if he was recruiting then he probably drew the short straw and got send here from Nazi HQ

I think the far right boneheads did purposely disrupt Specials gigs because of the whole racial harmony thing but I also think that some skinheads were a bit thick and didn't understand it.

Madness and The Beat never suffered in the way The Specials did

More importantly I can't make out if you are agreeing or disagreeing with me.

Madness did suffer quite badly. Mainly because they were all white. So the racist element used to turn up thinking they were a right wing skinhead band. They even wrote a song called Dont quote me on that, to dispell any such ideas. Its on their Work, rest and play EP.

Also... if you look at their ridiculous chuckle-filled train journey to Ippo, you get sight of the cameraman who doesn’t look particularly white himself. Would love to know his DNA mix.

The Specials...are you having a laugh......free Nelson Mandela? It's up to you? Concrete Jungle...anti Natonal Front soon? ???? Do your homework!

I am old enough to remember the Specials in their heyday. I was a teenager at the time. It has never ceased to amaze me that such an actively anti racist band managers to attract a hardcore of right wing NF numpties.

I have seen them several times over the years - they’re a superb live act, and I love their stance on racism in general and right wing politics. Shame about some of their audience.

So this wasn't local people as we were led to believe but a group of right wing loons who came to Ipswich to counter demonstrate an anti fascist demonstration.

We got there in the end I suppose.

Does make you wonder whether the stickers were the same people, or whether it was someone local which then brought about the anti-fascist demonstration and counter-demo

Also have to wonder why Ipswich?

The stickers are probably a bit of both. It's a trend to lamp post towns with all sorts of stickers at the moment - especially football ones.

If say a group of Ipswich fans are going to Blackpool for the weekend they may lamp post Blackpool with ITFC stickers, it's currently a thing. It doesn't mean Blackpool is full of ITFC fans.

Edit; I think the Anti Racist protest was originally organised by Ipswich & Suffolk Council for Racial Equality as a response to the stickers.

I'm guessing that cameraman regularly spikes Jamie's drinks with rohypnol.

Not sure I was clear but I’m wondering who was responsible for the stickers - was it a local or did someone from the same group of people hop down on a train and do so? And if so why target Ipswich - what is it about here that made them think locals might be receptive?

Yes the anti-racism protest was in response to the stickers - so them showing up for the weekend in response kind of makes sense (although it still seems a lot of effort given that presumably other towns have these sorts of demos at times) but it was the first part that I’m more curious about

The stickers were put up by a white supremacist group called The Hundred-Handers. I would say it was probably done by a sad local odd bod who lives with his mum and has followed the group on social media and requested some stickers.

This isn't definite info, just my opinion.

Again I know the group that they were affiliated to - but were this lot at the weekend not Hundred Hands too then?

I had assumed the same on the stickers until seeing this bunch

I thought it was all the same but I don't know, I haven't been following it. All I know is that it wasn't an uprising of hardcore Ipswich Nazis.

I ended up watching far too much of their Ipswich film and a couple of things struck me. A) They're not the sharpest tools in the box and B) they seem extremely immature, getting far too excited in a 12-year old boy sense about their daring "operation" and their coy little phrases and gestures.

All in all, I'm not sure whether the above makes them less dangerous or more. With the rise in right-wing terrorism, I think anti-radicalisation initiatives can probably start at this level before they do anything more serious and more stupid.
