Cat Owners 23:33 - Feb 17 with 8154 viewsSwailsey

A local friendly cat who prowls around our house just ran across the street because he recognised me and right under a moving car. There was a definite thud, but he ran off and we couldn’t find him anywhere.

Not entirely sure who’s cat it is - he’s just very lovely and always hanging around our front.

It’s dark and there’s loads of gardens nearby. Is the fact he ran off a good sign?

Can I do anything else?

Quite attached to the little dude and feel a massive sense of guilt because he wouldn’t have crossed if he hadn’t recognised me.

Nobody is making you get a cat. Or comment on this post.

Cats are everywhere and unavoidable. I don’t have one but that doesn’t keep them out of my garden or away from the bird table.

Which of my observations is wrong?

You do not have to have a cat to dislike them as animals, cats are a big reason behind the song bird decline, owners should be made to put a collar and bell on a cat.

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Not sure what any of that had to do with this post. It’s fine not to like cats

What is all this preening love a cat guff. Cats are revolting. They climb up on kitchen worktops, tables, beds, armchairs leaving hairs and god knows what germs everywhere. They shed hair and skin causing asthma attacks for kids and adults alike. They are a major killer of bird life and they crap in your neighbors garden.
What’s to like about a cat!

Cats and the people they keep are just, well, a little bit weird.

Whereas those who keep crocodiles and monkeys are normal. Cats are lovely. I have a dog as well. Sorry if that upsets you.

It doesn't upset me, the killing of countless fledglings during the season seriously does though, far too many cats around.

Serious question. For all the birds there are in this country, you rarely see a dead one. You would think they would be falling out of trees all over the place. I don't mean any malice or p1$$ take with that, just wondered.

Usually eaten up pretty quickly aren't they.

Always some wildlife or bugs available to dispose of the bodies.

I have to say, as a bit of a bird lover myself, it is one of the things that puts me off cats.

Not that I'd wish any cat harm, other than the odd jug of cold water here and there.

I'm certainly no cat lover and a bit more on the side of keen amateur ornithologist...but the overwhelming majority of birds caught by cats are thought to be sickly or injured already (what self respecting bird is going to let itself get caught by some fat house cat!!) Still agree the murderous feckers should have bells on their collars....and they should try not to crap in my veg patch

"... majority of birds caught by cats are thought to be sickly or injured already"

They're not though. Many are taken from nests.

Or when feeding.

The collar thing is a conundrum for the conscientious cat owner isn't it.

A cat wearing a collar can injure itself because they go all sorts of places when they're out and about and the things get caught up.

But the solution of a releasable type collar can prove to be expensive if you're getting through several per month!

RSPB says:

"Why do we not see more dead birds?
Often, these predators will eat the prey themselves or take them back to feed their young, which is why it's rare to find the remains of dead birds. Due to a bird's light body mass, those that aren't found by predators or scavengers will decompose rapidly.2 Jun 2008"

You are right and yes, they are free spirits. It’s one of the things I like most about them. Dogs have owners (and I love dogs too!), cats have staff!

Sadly, I gather road accident is by far the main cause of accidental death for cats.

Cats are moody feckers though but dogs are simply the best with undying love.

If you whack a dog over the bonce with a shovel, whack it in the car boot and drive to Scotland it will still wag its tail when you open the boot.

Do the same thing with a cat and I swear to god it will go for you.

Dunno.

It might not be ok about going to Scotland to be fair.

The rest you're likely to get away with.

I'd like to share a beer or two with him, he's ok but he is one of those people who can never accept a middle ground or that people can have a difference of opinion.

I suspect he was spoilt rotten as a child.

I think you're both wrong about each other and can't see the wood for the trees.

You'd get along famously. Besides, none of us are the same as we come across on here.

The forum is a playground. But I know well from experience even those I have strong disagreements with on here are mostly friendly behind the scenes; i.e. via PMs.

And I'd be tempted to join you both but know when the serious drinking began I'd be out of my depth.

Jerra mate, I am not gay and have never said this to a total stranger before, but, I think I love you. I really should use the internet more for what it was built for. If you are around any game between now and the end of the season, I would love to buy you a pint and a pie. I really have wondered about that for years. Cheers mate.

We should give it a go. Anyone is welcome to have a drink with me in my Norwich half of the week, I don't drink at home in Ipswich - I sort of lead two lives, it's good for the health.

I have asked Vegantastic Herbivore for a drink a few times but he has declined, I think he struggles to leave the house due to a lack of energy. No9 pops in to see me now and again but I just get on with things while he talks about his socialist dream and oil pipelines - and he thinks I'm listening.

Heh.

I don't know Fred but I reckon he's a pretty good guy.

He's taken a lot of stick on here and rarely bothers to retaliate.

I reckon I'd get on well with him. I do tend to share some of his looney left ideals.

Even some of those I don't wholeheartedly believe in.

No9 is a good guy but he is the typical TWTD socialist.

He is probably on a ridiculous pension after working for Big Oil all his life and drives around on some mega 3 wheeled BMW contraption. He spends all day reading The Morning Star and googling how bad Boris Johnson is while his (Much younger and far to good for him attractive) wife potters around clearing up after him.

He puts mega earning playboy socialist Artsbossbeard to shame - and his wife does all the DIY and mows the bloody lawn.
